Is this place ever closed/ inaccessible owing to snow? We are planning to visit in December.
The weather is always iffy's in the winter months and can create havoc for travelers. There is nothing more beautrful than the snow falling in the parks. The quietness in the parks makes one think they should whisper.
You might want to check the long range forcast and l I would leave the park early afternoon before the temperature drops. Do check with the rangers to verify any road that might be closed. And I suggest you take water and other roadside emergency equipment.
It usually snows first two weeks in December, with temps in the mid to high 30s. Brrrr. Second half of the month will see rain, snow, wind and sunshine with temps in the high 30s and low 40s. Because there is a lot of walking at Wupatki as well as Sunset Crater, if it's snowing or flurries or raining it would be tough walking. Call the Wupatki Visitor Center 928-679-2365. Closed December 25th.
The main roads thru the park could be a problem with a heavy snow. Not sure if they are plowed or otherwise treated....the area is fairly flat which would lead to some snow drifts. I was there in April and there was still some snow patches on the higher mountain tops in the surrounding area. Since this is semi desert the rain/snowfall amounts are limited and usually do not last for extended periods at the lower elevations.....I recommend you contact the park office for more information as well as checking the average weather conditions for the past several winters.
Depending where you are coming from, it would be possible for a heavy blizzard close this park. Sunset Crater and Wupatki are connected by the same road.
This is a very arid climate with not a lot of rain or snow. If concerned, try calling the visitor center and ask them.
The walking trail would likely be closed after a snowfall and when ice present but visitors center would still be open. Likely have shortened hours as well. There should be a park website with details.
Not sure. I was there in July. The terrain was fairly flat, so I wouldn't think there would be closures.
Could be --- we are not getting as much snow as we have in previous years, as roads due close due to weather....check a weather app
Contact Park services, check website for weather and alerts for parks . If you can get chains or have all weather tires. That is a plus. Always have AAA ready. Signals fir phone not always available in parks because of mtn interference so be aware before you travel ... good that you ask questions
I am not sure as we were there in June.
