we are heading from Pheonix to Grand Canyon with 10 yr old boys....we will site see from Pheonix to Grand Canyon ….is Sunset Crater Volcano Nat Monument a good choice....can we just go there ourselves and see cool stuff or do we need to do a tour....we have a tight schedule so wanted to see on our own but don't know if that is possible...any help or ideas....or other ideas along the way....we only have 2 days ...thanks in advance
Good question! 10 year old boys will LOVE this! As far as I know there are not any tours available, and if there were, you would be throwing your money away. I did this trip going to the Grand Canyon and entering the GCNP from the east. It may take an hour if you get out and explore, and of course you will want to. There is a little hike you can take from the paved parking lot which is quick and easy. Also, this attraction is also combined with Wupatki National Monument. Go to this for sure as you can actually go into three or four ancient pueblos. I imagine before the 10 years are grown, these areas will be roped off; but for now you have the run of the ruins without anyone around. Warning is that there is a ranger station, but they do not offer water so take a cooler with you!
We enjoyed Sunset Crater mor than the Wutpaki ruins. The lava field was worth it and so was the climb up the Lenox crater cinder cone. Probably 2-3 hours total and not too far off the main highway.
didn't spend too much time here it was very windy...enjoyed wupatki more.
thanks so you for all your thoughts...you are all so kind and helpful. Jill
It's on your way. If you are short on time, just drive through and hit a few of the info stops. Your boys may or may not have much interest, but you and your husband will be able to check out and it off you list, then when your boys read about or see something on t.v. about it, you can remind them of the time your visited the monument. If you do stay in Flagstaff for the night, I HIGHLY recommend the Hampton Inn & Suites!
All of the above. If they enjoy the outdoors they will have a great time hiking the lava fields! Wupatki is also very interesting!
You can drive there on your own and spend as little or much time as you want. You can easily see Sunset Crater and Wupatki in a long morning. Sunset Crater has interesting lava fields you can walk through. If you continue on the Sunset Crater-Wupatki Loop you can see views of the painted desert and visit the Wupatki ruins. No official tours needed. Just stop and look at what you are interested in. The visitor's center is informative and can tell you main points of interest. We just did this recently and then spent one full day at the Grand Canyon.
Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater are both great sites that can easily be done without a guide. Spend a night in Flagstaff if you can. If the boys are into astronomy don’t miss the Lowell planetarium
It's a drive through national park. You can spend as much or as little time as you want. You can park and hike the trails or just drive through and see it all. I think we spent less than an hour in the park because of a tight time schedule
