Johannesburg , South Africa , is one of the most populous cities in Africa with over 6,200,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area. The city is a historic economic centre for the country and is a leader in world finance.
Visitors can head to Soweto, a part of the city that was at the centre of the Apartheid and is home to the Apartheid Museum. The Mandela Family Museum is also a great place to visit for anybody interested in learning more about the country’s history in Apartheid and Nelson Mandela.
Tourists can leave from Johannesburg to go on a safari, or simply visit the Lion Park and Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens to experience South African wildlife.
Johannesburg is easily reached through OR Tambo International Airport (Airport code JNB). The airport sees over 28,000,000 passengers a year and is the most trafficked airport in all of Africa. It acts as a major hub for South African Airways and serves around 60 more airlines flying regularly scheduled routes.
South African Airways, 1 Time, and Airlink are the only airlines flying to more than a few destinations; most carriers only offer service to two or three cities from Johannesburg. South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways and United Airlines offer the most frequent service to or from OR Tambo International Airport.
The airport is not served by many low cost carriers, as the majority of the flights to or from Johannesburg are long haul trips.
