Ajaccio is a city in the French commune of Ajaccio on the island region of Corsica. It is the second largest city in the region.
Ajaccio is built around a harbour and covers the coastline of the majority of the gulf where it is located.
The city is known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. His house is now a popular museum and must-visit tourist destination, aptly named Casa Buonaparte.
Most visitors enjoy visiting the vineyards, but the Museum Fesch is another popular stop in addition to the Bonaparte house.
Ajaccio is accessible from mainland Europe by ferry and plane. The city is home to the largest airport on the island, Aeroport de Campo Dell’Oro (airport code AJA), and ferries travel regularly between Ajaccio and Porto Torres, Nice, Toulon and Marseille.
City busses with eight different urban routes provide easy transportation around the city.
Aeroport de Campo Dell’Oro serves three carriers – Air France, EasyJet and Transavia. The Air France flights are commonly operated by other airlines, such as Regional, CCM Airlines and Brit Air. Some flights out of Ajaccio are seasonal.
