Frankfurt is the second largest city in Germany behind Berlin with an urban population of approximately 2.3 million people. It is located in the state of Hesse and is part of the Rhine-Main metro region.
Visitors to Frankfurt enjoy going to museums, the city’s historical sites and the music and theatre venues around the city.
Popular historical sites are the Deutsche Börse, Römer and St. Leonhardskirche. Alte Oper is a famous opera house and the Jahrhunderthalle hosts a huge variety of concerts and shows.
Tourists usually stop at the Goethe Haus, which is also a museum, and the Jüdisches Museum, a mansion turned museum exhibiting Judaism in Germany pre-Holocaust.
The majority of travellers heading to Frankfurt fly into Frankfurt am Main Airport (airport code FRA). The airport is approximately 12 kilometres outside of the city, accessible by the motorway and with public transportation. Frankfurt am Main Airport acts as a major hub for Air India, Lufthansa and Condor Flugdienst. The latter of the two fly to most destinations out of the 127 airlines with routes into or out of Frankfurt am Main.
While Lufthansa and Condor Flugdienst fly the most routes, the airlines with the most flights leaving Frankfurt am Main each year are Lufthansa, US Airways, United Airlines, Continental and Air Canada. Lufthansa operates more than 13,000 flights a year, US Airways almost 7,000, and the remaining three approximately 4,000 each.
