Girona is a Catalan city on the north-eastern tip of Spain . It has a population of nearly 100,000.
The old city of Girona is rich with history and the old Jewish section of the city is one of the best preserved ghettos in the world. The Bonastruc ÇaPorta Centre is a museum that used to be a Jewish learning institution. It offers a great view into Jewish life in Spain before the Spanish inquisition.
The Girona Cathedral and La Rambla are a popular church for architecture lovers and a busy street with a lot to see and do.
Travellers can choose between flying into Girona-Costa Brava Airport (airport code GRO) and El Prat Airport (airport code BCN). Girona-Costa Brava Airport is also called Barcelona Girona Airport. It is about 12 kilometres outside of Girona, as opposed to El Prat Airport which is a little over an hour’s drive from Girona.
The upside to flying into El Prat Airport is that almost 40 times as many flights are scheduled to the airport. Ryanair flies the most flights out of Barcelona Girona airport with approximately 400 a year. The airlines flying out of El Prat Airport with the most scheduled flights are Spanair, Iberian, Air Europa Lineas, Lufthansa and SAS.
