Santiago de Compostela in the A Coruna Province of Spain is a relatively small city with about 100,000 inhabitants. The city is best known for the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela which is the reputed burial place of Saint James, one of Jesus Christ's apostles.

Located on the outskirts of the city approximately ten kilometres northeast of the city centre, Santiago de Compostela Airport (airport code SCQ) is the most important international airport in the region servicing nearly two million passengers on 11 airlines. Ryanair, Spanair, and Air Europa Lineas Aereas operate flights the most often.

The Camino de Santiago is the pilgrimage Catholics take to Santiago. After Rome, Santiago de Compostela is the top pilgrimage destination for Catholics. To get a certification of completion one must journey at minimum 100 kilometres on foot. Upon completion, it is believed that one's stay in purgatory would be halved.

For food lovers, the Mercado de Abastos is a can't miss. Full of fresh fish, produce, and meat. Definitely try the Chorizos and Cecina.

Spend a night in a "Paradore." These castles which are now functioning luxury hotels are sprinkled throughout Spain but the best ones are in Santiago. And if you have time, rent a car and venture to the Pazo de Oca, or what locals call the "Galician Versailles, a privately owned palace with well manicured gardens.
