Flying to District of Columbia

Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States of America . The city is home to many of the most historic sites relating to the country’s political history and independence; it is also the current seat of the American Federal government. It is served by three major airports all within 50 kilometres of the city centre.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (Airport code BWI), often referred to simply as “BWI”, is the furthest of the three, located closer to Baltimore than it is Washington, D.C. Nonetheless, it is only 48 kilometres from the capital and is a great option for anybody looking to find a cheap, domestic flight. Southwest, JetBlue, US Airways, Continental, and AirTran all offer frequent, extremely low fares for flights into or out of BWI. The airport serves over 20,000,000 passengers a year on approximately 280,000 flights. Southwest flies the most frequently, followed by US Airways, United, and Continental.

Washington Dulles International Airport (Airport code IAD), commonly called “Dulles”, is the second furthest airport at just fewer than 42 kilometres from the city centre. Dulles is a hub for United Airlines and carries over sixty percent of the passengers travelling through the airport. Flights leave Dulles to over 40 international airports and 80 domestic airports. United and US Airways fly the most frequently, followed by Continental, All Nippon Airways and Qatar. United serves the most destinations.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (Airport code DCA) is the closest airport to the city centre, located only five kilometres away. “Reagan” handles approximately 19,000,000 passengers a year flying on over 30 airlines. US Airways, Delta, American, United and Continental account for the majority of these flights. Delta and US Airways fly to the most destinations. Reagan only serves a few international flights to Canada and a couple Caribbean countries, as it does not have a customs facility.
