5.0 of 5 bubbles based on 21 votes

Last Updated - October 2012

Hong Kong is one of the world's great shopping destinations, featuring countless shopping malls, centers, galleries, street shops and street markets spread throughout the city, and in now place is the street market scene as thriving and vibrant as what you can find in Mongkok.

Mongkok is a place we have long enjoyed spending time. There is always something interesting, exotic and photogenic to see within the many markets found in this district and there is usually something we find worth buying, even as local residents.

Below we have listed our favorite stops on the Mongkok Market scene as well as a suggested afternoon (1/2 day) trip you can make, seeing the Mongkok Markets during the prime part of the day, when they are at their best.

An Afternoon at the Mongkok Markets

1.) Fa Yuen Street Market (30-45 min) 2:00-2.45pm
2.) Flower Market (30 min) 3:00-3.30pm
3.) Bird Market (30 min) 3.30-4:30pm
4.) Goldfish Market (45 min) 4.45-5.30pm
Dinner in one of the 1000s of good local restaurants in Mongkok

  • 1. Fa Yuen Street Market
Fa Yuen Street Market, Hong Kong, China

Click the above link for our review of the Fa Yuen Street Market.

The Fa Yuen Street Market is a more practical version of the Ladies Market, dealing in more consumable items but equally has its fair share or quirky and interesting things for tourist buyers.

  • 2. Flower Market Street
Flower Market Road, Hong Kong, China

Click the above link to read our review of the Mongkok Flower Market.

There are many flowers, plants, bonsai to see at the Mongkok Flower Market, but it is the endless lovely orchids available here that bring us back time and time again.

    During Chinese New Year
The market is particularly interesting the week before Chinese New Year for obvious reasons. Make an effort to visit here if you are in Hong Kong during the CNY holiday to see the galore of traditional plants, flowers and arrangements being made for this important holiday.

  • 3. Bird Market and Garden
Bird Garden Yuanpu Street, Hong Kong, China

Click the above link to read one of our reviews for the Mongkok Bird Market

The Bird Garden and Market is yet another exotic and interesting find in the Mongkok area. Here you will find many stalls dealing in life birds, feed, cages and most things related to the Chinese passion of owning birds.

  • 4. Goldfish Street Market (Most Exotic of the Mongkok Markets)
Goldfish Street (Tung Choi Street), Hong Kong, China

Click the above link to read one of our reviews for the Mongkok Goldfish Market.

The Goldfish market is one of the truly exotic spots in Hong Kong where you can find many exotic and beautiful fish, turtles, lizards, salamanders, Rhino beetles and other interesting animals for sale or just to have a look. It is so very interesting to browse and take a few pictures on this street.

  • 5. Ladies Market
    Ladies Market, Hong Kong, China

Click the above link to read our review of the Ladies (night) Market in Mongkok.

The Ladies (night) Market is the crown of the Mongkok street market scene, best seen in the early evening before the tourist traffic gets heavy or at nighttime when the market is thriving. Here there seems to always be something new, interesting, practical or just fun to buy.

The stalls mostly sell the same items so dont be afraid to shop around a bit and let them know that youre are doing so. Prices can quickly fall 33-75% when they know you are not quick to buy. We always suggest 50% is probably going to be a good paying price when you are negotiating with stall keepers.
