In May 2011, I travelled from Paris to Barcelona by train. The first 3 hours are spent in fairly uneventful French countryside, but after you have visited Montpellier Saint Roch, the train follows the med, through beautiful sun kissed, white buildinged towns such as Agde and Sete. These towns are otherworldly, bathed in the heat and something of an attraction in themselves, but the train drifts on through scenery, with the ocean on one side and lagoons, populated by flamingos on the other. If you have seen Spirited Away, the train line (when you are on the train itself), seems elevated, or even slightly submerged in the sea and etang. It is without a doubt the loveliest train ride I have ever taken. If you enjoy the tranquil, semi-tropical ambience of the mediterranean outside of the city and have the time to indulge in just drifting to enjoy the colours and warmth of this area, it is deeply recommended you do. The following items are added just to allow the above, but were part of the same holiday, so are very do-able. Selections from the cities are on my review page.
