inexpensive ways to have fun from Ocean City to Cape May

  • 1. The Wetlands Institute
    The Wetlands Institute, Stone Harbor

The Wetlands Institute is a great half day or less trip. It's basically an animal preserve. There are educational seminars throughout the opening hours. Tarappin diamondback turtles can be seen in tanks, with lots of information on the turtles. All kinds of sealife are featured in other areas of the institute, including live fish, crabs, sea urcins, starfish, seahorses, etc. There are trails that you can walk and observe sealife & birds. Bring binoculars, or rent them at the institute. It was very interesting.

  • 2. Cape May County Park & Zoo
Cape May County Park & Zoo, Cape May Court House, Middle Township

This is a great zoo located along Rte 9 in the Avalon area. 160 species of animals are featured here. You will be impressed, I expected it to be a small zoo, and it's not. From lions and tigers and bears to monkeys and snakes & turtles, this is a cool place to go. And the best part is, it's FREE!

  • 3. Sunset Beach
    Sunset Beach, Lower Township

Wow, you've definitely got to go to this place! There is so much going on here, you'll be glad you did. From the Cape May Diamonds that you will find on the beaches, to the SS Atlantus, a sunken cement ship 150 feet off the beach, to the beautiful sunsets, to the patriotic flag lowering ceremony, this place has a lot going on. You will enjoy it, your kids will love it, the older folks will have a good time too. Bring you wallet and pick up some souviners at the gift shop or some food at the Sunset Beach Grill. This is a must-see stop.

  • 4. Cape May Lighthouse
    Cape May Lighthouse, Cape May

The Cape May Lighthouse is beautiful! It's a still functioning light house, too. There are 199 steps, and that sounds deceptively simple, but it's not really that simple. You'll be glad when the kids want to stop to look out the portholes and windows so you can get a little break. Once you're at the top, it's worth it, the views are quite beautiful. Sunset Beach is located just south of the lighthouse, and you can see the sunsets over the ocean from the top of the lighthouse. If you go in early September or late August, you could see the sunset from the top of the lighthouse (it closes as 8pm). Go! It's worth it!
