If you want to see historic Whyte Avenue, Jasper Avenue and the best views of the river valley from the High Level Bridge, there is no... more » better way to do it then from a streetcar. At four dollars a round trip, it is one of the best deals in the city.
Streetcar #33 was built in 1912 in St. Louis and was in regular service in Edmonton until 1951, when streetcar service was ended. Most of the cars were sold off and #33 was discovered in very poor condition many years after. It took 17 years of dedicated restoration to bring the car back to working condition. It was restored back to its 1912 condition as a double ended car. A sister streetcar works down in Fort Edmonton Park.
Getting on the streetcar a block from Whyte Ave (just down from the Farmer's Market) was a quick and enjoyable experience. Period dressed conductors collect your fare and give you a short history of the train and the surrounding areas as you pass by. You pass through a tunnel and then begin passing over the High Level Bridge. The views are nothing short of spectacular. You pass close to the Legislature grounds and make a couple of stops before Jasper Avenue. Your tickets allow you to reboard the train at a later time if you would like to explore an area.
Overall, a round trip takes about 40 minutes and is a throughly enjoyable ride for all ages. less «
