Susan S's City Tips

  • Always leave a tip. The average tip for dinner is between 15% to 20%. For taxi rides, tip is around 10%.
  • Bring an umbrella. Not only does it rain a lot in Vancouver, sheltering under an umbrella is a great excuse to get close to your date.
  • If you're planning to take a taxi on Friday or Saturday night, there may be a delay getting home. Downtown is bustling on the weekends so it may be hard to catch a taxi.
  • Bring two pieces of identification with you. If you're planning to go to a restaurant that serves alcohol or a bar, you may be asked to show your identification to verify your age.
  • Check the SkyTrain schedule. The last train from downtown leaves between 1 and 1:30am.

A must-do activity for love birds visiting Vancouver — enjoy long walks on the beach in one of the most stunning cities in the world. Head down to English Bay after dinner or plan a picnic here while watching the beautiful west coast sunset. The beach is also conveniently located near restaurants and bars along Denman and Davie Street.

    Tips
    • Get active by bringing a frisbee, rollerblading around the seawall or playing a game of volleyball. This is a fun way to get to know your date.
    • Enjoy a night of free fireworks at the Celebration of Lights Festival, which happens during the last week of July and early August.
    • Plan a romantic bike ride around the seawall. Start from the entrance of Denman and West Georgia, which will take you directly to English Bay in about 45 minutes.
    • While I don't recommend swimming in the water here, it is okay to dip your feet in while walking along the beach.

    • An easy way to get around the park is to rent a bike for a few hours from one of the bike shops along Denman Street. Don't forget to wear your helmet!
    • Make dinner plans along Denman Street. Whether it be Ukrainian, Korean, Japanese, Canadian or Greek food, Denman Street has many dinner options for you to explore.
    • Treat yourself to gelato. Grab an ice cream along Denman Street and enjoy a relaxing stroll around the park.
    • The best time to visit the park is during the summer. Be sure to wear a rain jacket and pack a small umbrella if you plan to visit Vancouver during the spring, fall or winter.

Yaletown is one of Vancouver's most upscale and stylish neighborhoods. For those wanting to wine and dine at a trendy restaurant, be sure to check out the options in this area. This district is also close to several parks and beaches, perfect for a romantic walk after dinner.

    Tips

    • As Yaletown is trendier than other Vancouver neighborhoods, dress it up a notch for dinner.
    • Plan an evening watching a Vancouver Canucks game at Rogers Arena, and then head down towards Yaletown after for drinks with your date.
    • Yaletown has many coffee shops — both chain and local — but if you're looking for cozier, quainter coffee shops, head to Gastown.

If you're looking for a casual evening out at a bar or restaurant, Gastown is the place to go. This part of town is always bustling during the weekend and is a popular destination for young couples. Gastown is also home to the famous Steam Clock on the corner of Cambie and Water Street.

    • Don't walk too far east. Gastown has improved over the last few years but further east towards Hastings and Main can be unsafe at night.
    • Take a photo with the historical Steam Clock. This is a must-do for those visiting Vancouver for the first time.
    • Gastown is the home of coffee lovers, which means you will find many hip local coffee shops in this district.

    • If you are looking for evening entertainment but don't want to head downtown, check out the improv show or live music offerings on Granville Island.
    • Restaurants tend to be a bit more expensive here as it is a tourist attraction. If you are on a budget, head along Broadway or West 4th Avenue for more reasonably-priced meals.
    • Watch out for the seagulls who like to steal your food while you're not watching, and make sure to cover your head if you see one flying above you!
