Conveniently located 120 kilometers (about a 1.5- to 2-hour drive) north of Vancouver, Whistler is the perfect place for a day trip. Known as one of the top skiing and snowboarding destinations in North America, it's a magical playground for those who love being outside. There are also many great activity options during the summer, such as mountain biking, alpine hiking, and zip-lining. Below are my recommendations for how get the most out of your one day trip to Whistler.

Susan S's City Tips

  • Don't forget your camera. The drive up to Whistler is absolutely beautiful. Be sure to plan a few stops to take photos of the mountains and ocean.
  • Wear a ski jacket, sweater, long socks, a warm hat, and gloves. Even if you're not snowboarding or skiing, it is cold up in Whistler.
  • Bus shuttles are available to take you from downtown Vancouver or the International Airport to Whistler. It takes about 2 hours from downtown and 2.5 hours from the airport.
  • Check road conditions prior to driving to Whistler. Roads can be slippery as it rains a lot in Vancouver. There also may be seasonal road closures along the highway.
  • If you can, bring your own snow gear. This will save you on renting costs, which can easily add up.
  • A tip of at least 15% is recommended at restaurants and bars.
  • Bring two pieces of identification with you if you plan to go to a pub or restaurant for an alcoholic drink.
  • Whistler is known for its top-notch snowboarding and skiing. If you're a first-timer, sign up for beginner lessons. Well worth it!
  • Take a photo with the famous Inukshuk and Olympic rings. These photographs are a must for anyone who visits Whistler!
  • Souvenirs tend to be a bit more expensive in Whistler. To save money, buy your Canadian souvenirs at a dollar store in Vancouver.

    • If you plan to stay in Whistler for more than a day, plan a camping trip here. Nothing beats camping next to a pristine body of water in the beautiful west coast.
    • Make sure you are physically fit. This hike is not a casual stroll. There are many steep parts so be sure to pack your hiking equipment and be prepared for a solid hike.
