Toronto is a foodie's paradise. I used to live in the city, so I know it well, and when I return it's all about meeting up with old friends over good food. With numerous neighborhoods cooking up their own unique flare, the city is a playground for your taste buds. With so many places to chose from, everyone's list will be different, but here is a compilation of my favorite spots to chow down and savor the best of Toronto's flavors.

Kait L's City Tips

  • Make reservations.
  • Many restaurants in the city offer gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options. No need to limit yourself to specific restaurants. If you're wary, just check the menu ahead of time.
  • There is awesome food in almost every district, so don't feel the need to drive across the city in rush hour for a good restaurant.
  • Canada is a multicultural country and Toronto's restaurants reflect that. Be sure to try some of the ethnically infused dishes during your stay.

On a recent trip to Toronto with a close friend, I told her I was going to take her to Kit Kat, a family favorite for years. With only a one night stay in the city, she still wanted to make sure we were going to the best spot, so we asked around. We got one response from everyone we asked: Kit Kat. She loved it. This Italian bistro is perfect for all occasions. Their food is always delicious and the atmosphere always welcoming. It looks like an old alleyway that's been covered over with an atrium roof and decorated with all of Nona's favorite things. I always go for spicy arrabiata when I eat Italian, and their 'Spicy Penne Sausage' is the best I've had yet.

    Tips
    • I always try one thing off the daily specials menu. They never disappoint.
    • Try the polenta! The sauce is out of this world.
    • This is a popular spot for theatre goers. If you're not headed to a play, try to make reservations for after 7.30pm, when the first dinner rush has cleared out.

An upscale tacqueria with a trendy Mexican vibe, El Catrin is the perfect summer spot to meet up with friends on a weekend. The award winning restaurant puts a modern edge on Mexican decor with bold colors, eclectic patterns, sugar skulls, and hand painted murals from local artists. They serve up delicious tuna ceviche, Baja fish tacos, and margaritas. Need I say more?

    Kait L Says:

Balzac's is a Toronto-born organic coffee roastery inspired by French Author Honoré de Balzac, who famously drank cups and cups of coffee during his late night writing hours. Balzac's owner, Diane Olson, studied the author's work while studying abroad in Paris. Eventually (back in the '90s), it became the motivation for her to learn coffee roasting in San Francisco and open a coffee stand in Toronto. Balzac's now reflects its French roots in its brick walls, fresh pastries, and round Parisian tables. The coffee is delicious, rich, and smooth.
