Edinburgh - my simple guide to this great city.

Found this guide helpful

I'm not a Scot, but I have been living near Edinburgh for the last 33 years, and I have come to love the city. In fact, my wife and I are still discovering favorite places, some of which I'd like to share with you. We normally travel into Edinburgh on the train - its hassle free and fast and whilst there is a great bus network (Lothian Regional Buses, £1-50 for a single ride, £3-50 for a day ticket) its quicker on the train. From the central train station you can go a number of different ways - up the ramps to Waverly Bridge for the tour buses and Airport bus or beyond to Princes Street gardens, always a great place to unwind (be sure to see the floral cuckoo clock near the national galleries). From Waverly bridge the Scott monument is just a short walk, as is the National Art Galleries (café at garden level worth a visit). If Art rocks your boat there is a gallery provided bus that takes in the galleries of Modern Art about 2 km away, or the Portrait gallery that is to the east end of Queens Street in York place. The Scott Monument and Art galleries are on Princes Street, the principle shopping street in Edinburgh, with Rose street and George street to the north, Rose Street have interesting small shops and eating places, whilst George street boasts more up-market fare. Above the east end of Princes Street can be seen the Greek style Acropolis based on Carlton hill, where there are good views over Edinburgh, but its much better going up Arthurs Seat. From the art galleries, climbing the mound brings you to the Royal Mile, and to the right is the wonderful castle (expensive but worth it - gun fired at 1300 daily, except when the Queen is in residence) and to the left at the other end is Holyrood Palace, the Queens residence. The Royal Mile is a bit of a mix, with really poor tourist traps intermingled with posh shops, cafe's and restaurants. Be sure to visit St Giles Cathedral and to the small room at the far end on the right, and some of the small courtyards off the main street. Opposite St Giles and next to the City Chambers is the only underground tour of Edinburgh worth a candle, Mary Kings Close, while further down the road are the free museums of Edinburgh, the Peoples museum and The Childhood museum, which is definitely not for blokes as its full of dolls. Further down the mile is the Scottish Parliament, where you can watch a debate if you are lucky (I'd rather watch paint dry myself) and then there is Holyrood palace in all its splendor next to Arthurs Seat and the Royal Park. Other places to visit are the National Museum in Chambers Street, as its a great place for everyone and we go there to shelter from the rain and chill (the museum café doesn't do cheap kiddies drinks, so if you have kids and plan to use the café take your own). Nearby is the Greyfriars Bobby dog at the end of Candlemaker Row, and just up the George 1V Bridge Street and near the bridge is The Elephant House, where Harry Potter was born. Rear room has a great view of the castle, cakes often not that great. Near the castle and worth visiting is the Camera Obscura, but make sure that you go when the sun is shining as it can be a bit disappointing when its not. In other places, Charlotte Square to the west hosts a National Trust house where visitors can see a town house as it used to be. To the north of the city and about 2 km from Princes Street are the Botanic Gardens which are always brilliant at any time of the year. Access from Princes street is via a 23 bus, which runs alongside the Art Galleries and up Hanover Street (bus office in this street). Even further out is the Ocean Terminal (no 22 bus) which is close to the Scottish Government buildings and the terminal hosts one of the best visitor attractions in the whole of the UK - the Royal Yacht Britannia. Walks around Newhaven can be good from there as well. Edinburgh is vibrant at any time of the year, but Festival time is Edinburgh at its best. Going on at the same time is the Official Festival, The Fringe, the Book, Film, Jazz, Gay festivals and others I've not mentioned. The Fringe Festival itself is so big that someone once told me that if I had unlimited resources, a motorbike to take between shows, and started at 10.00 am and finished at 03.00 am after 3 weeks I'd be able to see 20% of the content. Typically the Festival time is August, and the last night fireworks from the Castle is as spectacular as any great world event. Enjoy Edinburgh - its a fantastic city.

howardeawilliams's City Tips

  • Get a day ticket for the bus - 3-50 GBP Joint tickets can be had for entrance to the Royal Yacht, Holyrood palace and other attractions including unlimited use of the tour bus. I'm not allowed to show the website but google it. Best time to visit the Castle is early (less people) or for the 1300 hrs gun. When you hear it and its 1300 don't worry. If there is a bang and its not 1300 then start to be concerned. Lunch can be very competitive - look out for good deals. The Grassmarket area has lots of eating places, not always brilliant, see trip advisor (we do) for the latest and best.
