The epicenter of French gastronomy, Lyon is considered to be the culinary capital of the world. Its unique landscape means that it has a great diversity of local produce and ingredients, which translates directly into fresh, seasonal dishes. Quite a few restaurants, cafes, and bouchons help it live up to this name. While it's impossible to map out all of the best eateries in Lyon (there's no shortage of delicious spots,) this guide hopes to give you a glimpse into what you might want on your plate, whether you're in the mood for traditional, modern, on-the-go, dessert, or even vegetarian. It features some of the most notable and popular restaurants, as well as local favorites and hidden gems. Bon Appetit!

Madison S's City Tips

  • If you would like to take your food to go, rather than sit in, tell the host that you would like your order "pour emporter."
  • While many of Lyon's restaurants have lovely terraces, note that smokers often choose this option. If you would like to avoid smoke, sitting inside is recommended.
  • Service charges are added to restaurant bills, so further tipping is based on your discretion. At higher-end restaurants, it is polite to leave €1 for every €20 spent.
  • To ask for your bill, say: "L'addition, s'il vous plait."

    Madison S Says:

A staple in Lyon's list of bouchons, this unpretentious location is always abuzz with activity. Its four-course set menus come in full portions, and include hearty salads, meat, and cheese dishes, as well as fanciful desserts. The cooking style is traditional Lyonnaise food, with modern components and local market flare, changing often to incorporate what's in season. Lentils, pork belly, panna cotta, and similar heavy, tasty ingredients often feature in the lineup.

Modern and bustling, L'Oenotheque de Lyon is part wine bar and part regional food extravaganza. Welcoming staff, reasonable prices, and terrace seating that catches the sun sweeten the deal at this restaurant, which offers artisanal cheeses, fresh juices, and menu items that change weekly depending on what's fresh in the local markets.

L'etage is a romantic setting, good for formal dining. Lushly-lit, warm, and charming, visitors can dine on fois gras, risotto, or roasted eggplant. The menu is small and tidy, but packs a robust punch of flavor in each plate. If you're lucky, you can score a window seat with dinner, with a view overlooking Place Terreaux.

Le Canut et Les Gones is part Lyonnaise bouchon and part modern-fusion cuisine. Staples such as bream fillet come invigorated with zingers like cherry vinegar emulsion and broccoli mousse. The setting is retro-chic, a collection of Lyon's odds and ends, making the restaurant itself an ode to Lyon's culture, while the menu is a romance of its traditional palette. Ambient, with a loaded menu, and a wine list that keeps up.

At La Cave d'a Cote, wine is the star of the menu. Located in a refurbished 18th-century wine cellar, complete with the candles-corkscrews-and-casks ambiance you might expect, La Cave d'a Cote's wine list highlights regional favorites like Côtes-du-Rhônes, while also giving local vineyards a stage - such as the owner's own Beaujolais Blanc. The extensive wine menu is paired with cheese and charcuterie plates only, and though food options are limited and built to share, the meat and dairy boards also feature locally-made products. It is a popular wine bar, where ordering by the glass can give you a good taster of the region.
