Molly S's City Tips

  • Most places are located within comfortable walking distance and Granada is a perfect city to stroll around.
  • Tipping is nice but not obligatory. It's usually more common in restaurants for a sit-down meal rather than for tapas at the bar.
  • At many bars in Granada, you receive free snacks (tapas) when you order a drink in the evening. It's a good way to fit in an inexpensive (yet still delicious) meal.
  • Sometimes you select tapas from a list, and at other times dishes are simply served. In the latter case, the tapa often improve with each drink, so it pays to drink up!
  • Cobbled streets and steep hills up to Albaicin will require sensible footwear. No heels!
  • Dress code is not an issue. Smart Casual generally works.
  • Puerta Del Carmen
    Restaurants (Mediterranean, European, Spanish)

    Molly S Says:

Located on Plaza del Carmen, right in the city center and opposite the Town Hall, Puerta del Carmen is an atmospheric spot. The building used to be a bullfighting ring, and the architectural details on the doors and ceilings still show that history today. An excellent selection of wines and great seafood makes this spot a firm favorite with locals in Granada.

    Tips
    • Don't stick to the free tapas — order a portion of food to share, and make a meal out of it!
    • The red tuna, octopus and fish dishes are excellent here.

Italy meets Granada at this smart Italian eatery in Plaza Romanilla, next to the Granada Cathedral. The owner of Restaurante El Deseo comes from a family of local restauranteurs, and he really knows his stuff, using only quality ingredients in his delicious dishes. The staff take care of each table, and there's a great outdoor terrace for people watching.

    Molly S Says:

Located close to Plaza Nueva, this traditional tapas bar has a great selection of wine and food for reasonable prices. Taberna Salinas serves typical Granada food and does it well. While there may be better choices for a sit-down meal on and around Plaza Nueva, nothing beats the real piononos (a Spanish pastry) from Santa Fé, served here for dessert!

    Tips

Seafood lovers shouldn't miss Los Diamantes, a noisy, busy spot, that fries up whatever the catch of the day is, from nearby Motril on Granada's Costa Tropical.

    Tips
    • After you've had your fill of fish, try the fried eggplant.

I love Loft Cafe because of its central, convenient location, next to the church on San Anton. The menu offers a large selection, from club sandwiches to smoothies to tapas, and the coffee is excellent too.

    Tips
    • The cafe warms up a cold day with a welcome tapa of hot stew.
    • Loft works hard to accommodate people with special requests (allergies, halal, vegetarian, etc.).
