Been in BCN for many years. This is a review for a three day whirl. Foremost are some Gaudi stuff. No. 1 is Segrada Familia, this being the best cathedral in the world. Puts Notre Dame to shame. Gaudi was a devout catholic, an incredible architect from a design and structural prospective and you would think he discovered lsd. Get ticket the day before you want to go there because now that is the only way to do it. About 120 years in the making. As spectacular as the outside is, don't miss the inside. gaudi's dragon house, Casa Batillo again, it is worth going inside. All Gaudi sites are $20 a head admission. Two Gaudi sites a day are enough. Next the Miro museum, get there by taxi. - if you like good modern art. It is supeb. Picasso museum is so so and can be kipper. By all means skip La Rambla, horrible tourist street with junk for sale and crappy street performers. The gothic quarter, particularly El Born is the heart of BCN. Great restaurants, bars , arts, people watching, music, etc. if you miss this you can't say you have been to BCN. Good shopping is plaza de gracia with great architect around there. Barcelonita, area right next to port can be skipped unless you want tipi lie down on beach, people watch and look at Frank Gerry'S cool huge coper fish.this is a great town with great architecture and great art. A wealthy city. Stay away from the tourist regions where you ovrperpay and only see tee shirts, garbage lardos and the like. If you fall in love with the city, never buy without first renting. More corrupt than the States. People are nice. Weather turns superb in May but cold between December and even in April people where coats. Parkin garages everywhere. Easy to navigate. Gaudi's Park Guell get ticket to see entire park. You buy this when you get there and start to wander the park for an hour then enter restricted area at designated time. Some pickpockets in park. Be careful don't let strangers try to take your photos. Park is superb- give yourself two hours. Great food all over the city except for tourist streets where you would pay 2-3 times to much for garbage food. Any questions, reach out tome

Walter F's City Tips

  • Great for art and architect lovers. Great food.
  • Stay away from La Rambla. In the Gothic Quarter, be careful of pick-pockets. Stay north of La Rambla.

You need to get to the Basilica of the Sagrad Familia early in your trip to BCN. You need to purchase tickets and just move for the earliest time possible. If there is only 1 thing you are going to see in BCN this would be it. The Basilica should leave an impression on you for eternity. Spend your evening strolling the streets of Barri Gotic and the adjacent El Born. You really need to go inside the Basilica. Puts Notre Dame to shame - even the French will admit to this.

Maybe a block east of the Basilica you will find the Bodega del Poblet. Not a tourist place. Go inside and get a table. The food and service is great though it is not "fancy" from the outside. Then look closely at all the old communist propaganda magazine covers on the walls.

This area and El Born (same character as Barri Gotic and adjacent to one another) may remind you of a stroll through the streets of Venice. Very old, windy streets where it is very easy to get lost. Stay north of La Rambla as the south side of the street comes up short. This area has some nice places to shop in El Born. Lots of restaurants throughout this area as well as places to get drinks. One could easily spend hours on end in this area.

If you appreciate modern art, this is the place to see. This museum sits on top of a mountain above the palace. Spend 1 - 1/12 hours here. The works are superb. The palace is down below the museum and Mies van der Rohe's pavilion (1929 World's Fair) is there as well (you don't need to go inside this but it is worth seeing and taking some photos of).
