Dushan J's City Tips

  • Vienna has a great public transport system that can get you pretty much anywhere in up to 30 minutes.
  • A pleasant way to get around is by CityBike - a public bike share system with 120+ stations that are also available for visitors.
  • If you’re planning a picnic, note that shops are closed on Sundays, and in general are only open until 7pm, so make sure to get what you need grocery-wise in advance.
  • You can buy a 24/48/72 hour or a weekly public transport ticket at any ticket machine or online. If you buy it online and lose it, you can simply print it again. Handy!

One of Vienna’s must-sees, the former imperial summer residence offers visitors an amazing park, the Crown Prince garden, a maze, a Labyrinth and walking paths to explore, all accompanied by stunning views of this Baroque masterpiece. Feel free to wander around the park unaccompanied, read a book in the gardens, and enjoy a cup of coffee and the view at Gloriette. Otherwise, you can join one of the guided tours of the palace and have a walk-through experience instead.

    • Schönbruenn Zoo, the world’s oldest zoo located within the Schönbruen premises, is definitely worth a visit. If you have time, plan at least 4-5 hours for the Zoo alone.
    • Check the opening hours before you visit - although open on the weekend, neither the premises nor the park are opened 24/7, and hours vary depending on the season.
    • There's an annual Summer Night Concert held in Schönbruenn around the end of May, where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra performs outdoors, free of charge.

Another former Baroque summer residence located in the 3rd District, Belvedere is home to amazing gardens and fountains, nestled within the grounds of its Upper and Lower palaces. This complex, originally built for Prince Eugene of Savoy, is a fantastic place to go for a walk, read undisturbed, and enjoy beautiful views. Make sure to savor the two most spectacular views on offer here - both of the Upper Belvedere - one from across the pond, and another from below the fountains and the staircase.

Located in the heart of the city center, Volksgarten offers walking trails lined with rose beds, all of which come with impressive historic Vienna views. The best way to enjoy the park, since it’s both tiny and beautiful, is to find a bench and simply sit and appreciate the environment for a while. And if you’re looking for an outdoor place in the city center to read a book while enjoying a cup of coffee, look no further!

Rathausplatz is the square in front of the 'Rathaus' (Vienna's City Hall), and divides the two halves of Rathauspark - a grassy city center park opened in 1873. Since it’s located close to some of the hottest tourist spots in town, when showing friends around I often combine a visit here with the historic inside-the-ring Vienna tour, which you might want to consider doing. Although the Rathauspark is not very big, there’s always something interesting going on in the square at its center - from concerts and festivals to wine fairs and a Christmas market.

Stadtpark was the first public park in Vienna, and covers 30-acres of land between the 1st and 3rd districts. The park consists of diverse landscapes - from meadows and flowerbeds to fountains and ponds - as well as being home to several interesting monuments. The best option here is to simply wander around and explore its grounds, keeping a look out for the Johann Strauss statue and the Karolinen bridge that crosses the River Wien as you go.

Prater is a famous public park, with the Wurstelprater Theme Park and its giant historic Ferris Wheel (a symbol of Vienna) at its heart. Walk along the main avenue, populated with characteristic horse chestnut (Hauptalle) trees, and past the theme park to reach the green zone - here you'll find plenty of trees, grassy spaces and walking/running trails.

The Donaukanal is the 17km-long water channel that winds through Vienna; its banks lined with jogging, walking and cycling trails, along with outdoor gyms and basketball fields. While other outdoor spaces in the city are more picturesque, the canal area is worth checking out for urban activities during the summer, and the popular cafes, restaurants and nightclubs that have sprung up here in recent decades.
