Phnom Penh has endless choices of places to eat, from street food to fine dining. You would only find some of these restaurants if a resident took you, as they are not all conveniently located on the riverside, where most tourists spend their time. This guide will save you from gambling on a meal that may not satisfy your food cravings and recommend restaurants with dishes that originate from India, South Africa, Cambodia, Japan, Mexico, China, and America.

Mel C's City Tips

  • While tipping is not expected in Cambodia, if you have great service and the food is delicious, you can add on a bit more, as salaries are often low for service staff.
  • The safest way to get around Phnom Penh is in a tuk-tuk; make sure you hold on tightly to your purse or smaller bags while in the tuk-tuk and around the city.
  • Get a map of Phnom Penh at a guesthouse or tourist agency. The city is big and a map will make it easier for you to explain to tuk-tuk drivers where you want to go, as many don't speak English.
  • Negotiate the price of the tuk-tuk ride before getting in. You can get from one side of the city to another for a few dollars.

You'll immediately feel the comforting atmosphere at Domrei Kitchen, with its friendly staff and a garden setting with modern decor. This is a great restaurant if you want to try a modern version of Cambodian food, with nice presentation and unique flavors. It's great to come with a few people so that you can share several dishes.

There are many decent pizzerias around Phnom Penh, but Luigi’s is hands down one of the best in Cambodia! Located in a small alley, this little restaurant is always packed with people indulging in delicious appetizers before diving into the thin crust pizzas covered in high quality, yummy toppings. In 2012 the owner took a trip around Italy, sampling regional dishes that inspired the current menu. All the ingredients are homemade or imported from Italy, and customers are offered antipasti (starters), pizzas, and tiramisu, which was introduced in response to high customer demand for a dessert on the menu.

Not only are the food portions as generous as they are delicious, but all the profits from Sugar and Spice go toward providing former sex workers with life skills and alternative employment — and with a high success rate. Plus, the staff here are trained by an experienced chef from New Zealand and have opportunities for promotion within the restaurant, moving up to positions like barista trainer or front-of-house manager. Needless to say, the food prepared is of top quality. This wonderful restaurant is in the center of town, not too far from the river, so definitely save at least one meal for Sugar and Spice.

I always recommend Sher-e-Punjab because this spot consistently provides tasty Punjabi dishes for their customers with a fantastic blend of spices, and this is coming from someone who has very high standards for Indian food! You can choose from a huge list of dishes, including an endless variety of curries, dahl and naan bread. The base for most of the curries includes onion, garlic, ginger and tomatoes, which packs the food with flavor, and then each dish is layered with spices and other fresh ingredients. It's best to share a few dishes with others in true Indian fashion and indulge in the flavors together.

Come to Restore One if you want fantastic comfort food or a fresh fruit shake to cool you down from the hot weather while supporting a good cause. You will be welcomed by friendly staff and choose from a small menu of the best burgers in the city — or alternately, choose one of the Cambodian dishes. While you wait for your food, you can check out handmade jewelry, reusable bags, and other products from their partners in the village. When you simply enjoy a meal here, your dollars support this training cafe, where young people learn life skills in a quality school that provides free education for about 300 impoverished children, as well as training for women running small businesses in rural areas.

The prices are reasonable and you won't leave disappointed.

There is a strong French community in Phnom Penh that continues to influence the food fusion in Cambodia, with quality combinations of flavors. Van's restaurant is among the top places to go for fine French cuisine. It's located in a historically significant French colonial style building, right by the riverside, and the property was owned by the Cambodian Van family from 1960 until the war broke out in the seventies. When the family regained ownership of the property in 2003, it was largely closed to the public until it re-opened as a restaurant in 2007. Your food is prepared with fine detail by Executive Chef Nicolas, who has worked at top restaurants with Michelin stars for over 17 years.

Quitapenas provides traditional and contemporary Spanish dishes using quality healthy ingredients that change regularly, depending on the season. Quitapenas literally means 'sorrows remover,' and no matter what mood you're in when you come into the restaurant, the food reflects the name, and you will leave a happy eater. While the prices are higher than average, this Spanish dining experience is definitely worth it for the quality that is delivered with attentive service.
