Xi M's City Tips

  • Don't bring clothes to wear. Get your clothes here
  • Koreans are friendly and welcoming!!
  • Road signs are usually only in Korean. So find a way, maybe an app on your phone, to translate into English
  • Learn some basic Korean or find a way (using pictures) to communicate clearly with the locals to avoid major misunderstandings.
  • Free wifi almost everywhere.

I think this is the best way to get around Seoul. There are also in-train voice announcements on what the next stop is, in English, so you are unlikely to get lost.

I have saved the best for the last. This turns out to be the most memorable part of the entire trip. It was at night, we were on rented bicycles, which we used our precious IC cards as "deposit guarantee", and, well we got frantically lost here somehow in this huuuge park, so we missed the closing time of the bicycle shop. But, thank God we received help from a friendly local to call the bicycle shop to "delay" their closing time for us(opps, feeling very apologetic), and he directed us the correct way to get back. Ironically, or interestingly, because we were lost, we went onto some "planned routes" and saw and experienced things which I believe few tourists have experienced. Hence my best advice to you is to plan, but leave space for "unplanned" and "unexpected" events and activities. That would truly be, the best, unexpected, trip of your life.
