Jovel C's City Tips

  • Tipping is not usually practiced in Singapore (as the bill already includes a goods and services tax), but it's welcomed if you feel you have received excellent service.
  • The most affordable form of transport is the train (MRT). Look out for hefty peak hour charges for taxis, and keep in mind that different taxis have different fees (Mercedes/Limousine/standard).
  • Do not bring food and drinks onto public transport in Singapore, especially the train and the bus, as you can be fined. Even in taxis, ask the driver if you can eat before you do so.

If you're looking to get away from the bustle of the city, head to Bollywood Veggies! Located in the Kranji countryside, this place houses a beautiful restaurant called Poison Ivy Bistro, which serves up delicious, fresh food. Feel free to walk around the 10-acre farm, and you may be joined by birds, fishes, frogs, dogs, and cats.

With four different rope courses of varying difficulty, including major zip lines, you can spend the day challenging yourself with your friends or your family. Climb ladders, cross bridges, swing swings, and crawl nets — if you love rope courses and sweating it out in the outdoors, this is an absolutely amazing place to try. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found the staff to be super-helpful and cheerful!

This is an affordable option for wakeboarding lessons, which are ideal for beginners because of the motorized cables. Ski 360 is conveniently located on the East Coast — soak up the sun while having fun wakeboarding in Singapore!

Although Amped is not actually outdoors, if you're planning an active and energetic trip to Singapore, this might be right up your alley! Singapore's first indoor trampoline playground is found at two different locations (Katong and Jurong) and is great fun yet a great workout at the same time. If you are tired from the usual activities, grab your friends and head down to Amped. In addition to trampolines, you'll find a foam pit and parkour walls.

This is the largest reservoir and water catchment area in Singapore! The treetop walk is a 250 meter aerial free-standing suspension bridge spanning the two highest points within MacRitchie. If that's not your cup of tea, you can also choose to take an exhilarating walk around the 11 kilometer nature trail loop known as the MacRitchie trails.

Singapore's last kampong village is a place that truly transcends time, with houses that still have zinc roofs and red mailboxes. Visit Kampong Buangkok to gain insight into how Singapore used to look before its urban makeover. Houses are traditional and don't have fences or gates suggesting a great sense of trust within the community. A feeling of camaraderie and peace engulfs you the moment you enter Kampong Buangkok — relish this piece of Singapore's history while you still can!

Take a bicycle ride down Chek Jawa and experience one of Singapore's richest ecosystems with six major natural habitats: sandy beach, seagrass lagoon, mangroves, and coastal forest. Take a stroll down to the pier and enjoy the breeze while admiring the beautiful marine life — such as otters and colorful sponges at low tide — and land animals such as wild pigs, flying foxes, and monkeys.
