Martha C's City Tips

  • Hop on a cable car at least once during your visit. Look out for brown-and-white Cable Car Stop signs, which have shorter wait times!
  • San Francisco is an open-minded city, so try to appreciate it in all its glory!
  • Walking is a great way to see a lot of the city, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes — and be ready for those hills.
  • Always have a jacket with you, even in warmer months. The fog can roll in quickly and the wind can pick up in a moment, so it's best to be prepared.
  • It is customary (and widely expected) to tip 15-20% at sit-down restaurants.
  • The hottest restaurants will either require reservations or a wait for a table — just factor this into your planning.

If you're a food lover visiting San Francisco, you must visit the Ferry Building at the end of Market Street. It is packed to the brim with great restaurants, food and beverage shops and even a thrice weekly Farmers Market. Most of the shops along the main hallway also offer samples, so you can munch for free as you explore!

    Tips
    • Come on market days (Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday) to experience the best of what the Bay Area has to offer in produce, meats and seafood.
    • Arrive early to line up for oysters at Hog Island Oyster Company. You will not want to miss all their delicious local seafood, or their impeccable grilled cheese sandwich.
    • Sample the tasty ice cream at Humphry Slocombe. With flavors like Peanut Butter Curry and Ancho Chocolate, you will leave feeling like you've been on an adventure.
    • There are some benches in the back along the waterfront, so why not enjoy a side of bay views with your nibbles.
    • Book Passage is a fabulous place to browse cookbooks (among other books) and often hosts foodie-focused readings and events. Check the online calendar to see what's on.

Food trucks! Over the past few years, food trucks have exploded in popularity all over the country, especially in food-focused San Francisco. Off the Grid brings many trucks together in one place, so that people can sample lots of different cuisines in one visit. Depending on the location of the trucks, you'll have a different selection of food on offer, and some locations offer fun seating options, like tents and blankets by the fire too.

You'll feel like you're a part of something really exciting in the large open dining room, and like many San Francisco restaurants, Nopa's menu is ever-changing and offers lots of local produce, meat and seafood. Their cocktails also stand out from the crowd, and are a great way to kick off your meal. Expect dishes like wood-grilled burger, Moroccan vegetable tagine and rotisserie herbed chicken.

Looking for amazing Neapolitan style pizza during your visit to San Francisco? Look no further than Pizzeria Delfina. The more casual sister to Delfina (right next door!), this is the original Pizzeria Delifna location. The eatery now has four locations around the Bay Area — a local favorite if there ever was one! While you may come for the pizza, you will definitely stay for all the tasty antipasti and daily changing specials.

    Tips
    • If there are meatballs on the menu, order them! They come served in a clay dish with a nice big slice of crispy bread.
    • There's something really unique and special about the panna (cream) pie, which is literally cream poured onto a pizza base. You will be blown away!
    • The line can get crazy and there are no reservations, but you can always have a drink while you wait, and enjoy some great people-watching in the eclectic Mission neighborhood.
    • They make fresh-stretched mozzarella in house every day. It's a must try!
    • Meat eaters will love the salsiccia pizza — homemade fennel sausage with peppers, mozzarella and onions.

This James Beard Award-winning restaurant continues to be a hard reservation to get! Though State Bird Provisions seems to be getting busier by the day, the quality of the food and service never falters. Expect an ever-changing menu that is always packed with the best local ingredients. The restaurant is named with California's state bird in mind: the quail. The concept started there and evolved into an entirely unique restaurant with few programmed elements. While there is a small menu from which you can order, most dishes for the evening are wheeled about dim-sum style, so guests can choose off the carts.

There aren't many restaurants out there where you can watch movies projected on brick walls while eating amazing food! Foreign Cinema has been an institution in the Mission neighborhood for over 15 years now, and it doesn't show any signs of stopping. The California-Mediterranean cuisine utilizes lots of local ingredients, always to fabulous effect. While seats outside are ideal for optimal independent and foreign film viewing, the vibe inside is cozier and warm.

Zuni Cafe has been open since 1979, and the reason for that is obvious. Its large and airy interior feels comfortable and inviting, and the smells emanating from the kitchen are intoxicating.
