We stayed 2 nights here in a queen size room on the harbour side, and appreciated the character, history and location of the building as well as the spaciousness of our room and ensuite. However, there were several negative points. Firstly, the extremely unpleasant odor in our room, similar to that of dirty socks. With small windows, it was impossible to air the room sufficiently. Secondly, the poor soundproofing with respect to traffic (with the windows closed despite the smell). Basically, our impression was that although the rooms must originally have been great, today they are sadly in need of complete renovation and more than just a new coat of paint as was obviously the case. The bath and sink in the ensuite were showing serious signs of ageing. Similarly, the noises made by the elevator were truly scary, and the security check outdated: we used the stairs.
Our welcome was no more than professional, the breakfast ample but not extraordinary. If we were to return to St John's we would stay elsewhere.
Date of stay: September 2018Trip type: Travelled as a coupleRoom Tip: Avoid harbour side if you want tranquility

Thank you very much for sharing your review, we truly appreciate it. I am sorry to read that your stay was not all you had hoped for. I'm not sure what would have caused any odors in your guest room, that is certainly an odd bit of feedback for us to receive. In regards to some of the comments surrounding the condition of the hotel, we are always striving to improve the experience for our guests and appreciate any and all feedback from our clientele. In fact, we are presently repairing and replacing much of the infrastructure in some of the guest bathrooms to ensure they are modern, clean, and fully functional. Maintaining a National Historic Site is not without it's challenges but we look forward to continuing to maintain and improve going forward! If you would like to chat further I would encourage you to contact me directly at the hotel anytime. We would also love the chance to host you once again and make a better impression! Kind Regards, Steve Denty General Manger
