I stayed at the Discovery Islands Lodge for a weekend at the end of August this year, and found it to be a wonderful respite from city living. It felt like a true wilderness experience: other than eagle nests and kelp beds, there are no other accommodations close by, and while easily accessible the Lodge doesn’t see many folk other than expected guests because the dirt road to reach it is long, winding and bumpy in places (so don’t forget to pack in your personal items, it is not a quick jaunt back to the Island stores to grab a forgotten toothbrush or bottle of wine). There is no light pollution – at night you will see the milky way and more stars than you thought existed – then reach down and sweep your hand through the water and see an underwater fireworks display which I was told was bioluminescence caused by “Dinoflagellates” (plankton). Very, very cool.
I am still a novice kayaker but realized I could easily become hooked after a glorious day excursion from the Lodge, paddling around nearby islands and marine park – the scenery was beautiful, our guide navigated us through the occasional turbulent currents and tide flows with experienced calmness and safety – and the salmon lunch she laid out for us on an island beach was a gourmet treat. As for the Lodge itself at the beginning and end of your day(s) out on the water, it is nothing less than perfect – comfortable and clean bedrooms and bathrooms, welcoming and friendly staff, delicious breakfasts and full kitchen facilities for the preparation of your self-catered evening meal.
In short, I can’t wait to go back next Summer!

If you're looking for a lodge from to serve as your base from which to develop your kayak paddling skills, or serve as accommodations for your guided or unguided day trips, or for launching that extended multi-day kayak tour you will not find a more comfortable lodge or beautiful setting, or more capable staff than that at Discovery Island Lodge, and Coast Mtn. Expeditions.

The beautiful lodge is in an idyllic setting, right on the water, perfectly located to explore the beautiful waterways and shorelines of the area, by yourself, with assistance and guidance of their wonderful staff, or with others staying at the lodge. The staff is incredibly knowledgable, pleasant and helpful; capable of assisting families with children or older adults and everyone in between in getting out on the water and back safely. The lodge is rustic yet very comfortable. The rooms, bathrooms, showers, kitchen, and sauna are all kept immaculately clean, functional, and attractively constructed using local wood. Shoes off at the door policy for lodge fits with our own policy at our house. Every room is just steps from a balcony overlooking the water, with all room windows opening out to the shoreline. The solar powered lodge, wonderful propane kitchen stove/oven, and wood fired sauna will meet all of your needs while minimizing your environmental footprint. Pack your dry goods (foods) in a container for carry and storage in the lodge kitchen. You will get your own refrigerated cold storage cubby in the kitchen for unloading your cooler contents but you may want to bring ice.
You'll find large purple starfish, jellyfish and harbor seals just outside your door.
If you're interested in sea kayaking or just hanging out on the water's edge you'd better book your trip to this place. We were there for 2 nights but we left wishing we could have stayed much longer!

The lodge is perfect for any interests or skill level. Owners and staff are ultra friendly. The lodge is rustic yet civilized. They provide an excellent vegetarian breakfast and there are hot solar showers. You can choose activities from sea kayaking (their specialty--rent or bring your own), guided tours, hiking, or just relaxing in the wonderful day room with a sweeping view of the islands and the mountains. We enjoyed talking with guests from around the world. Prices are quite reasonable. I can't wait to come back. The only negative is if you have trouble with stairs, this might be difficult since the lodge, an old converted fish production building, is three stories high. Don't come at night since the lodge is at the end of a gravel road and could be hard to find at night.

Discovery Islands Lodge is a former fishing camp that was totally renovated to serve as a lodge, both for kayakers leaving from the premise, daytrippers as well as a stop over for kayakers on their way through the area. The rooms are immaculate, everything is super clean, the views from each room fantastic. The bathrooms are shared and the kitchen and common area is above the rooms, so do not expect to sleep in here. The staff treated us like family, actually better. The breakfast was home cooked and wonderful. We stayed the night and did an easy day trip locally. Saw lots of wildlife, the paddling was really easy due to the guides excellent route planning, got a delicious lunch underway. All in all fantastic. It takes a while to get out to the lodge, 45 minutes from the ferry, after making it up 1/2 of Vancouver Island, so at least 2 ferries but it is really worth the trip. Even if you are not kayaking, the lodge is beautifully located, the atmosphere serene and you can see it all from the beautiful deck.
