We stayed 10 days in the E2 apartment. This review is fully in line with those already written by (fastvincent, jono, mutze, thebaggies26, TennisHolidays et al). To begin with we arrived in the middle of the night as planned and it was agreed with the owner. We arrived 2 h earlier, which also the owner confirmed and said there were no problems. We were received by the night watchman and it was no problem. The morning after when we were going to the gym, we were told off by the manager. Or rather, we were expected to account for how it was and why we came earlier (at 23 instead of 01). I said that everything was done with the owner, and that he should take the discussion with him instead. But he didn't agree. As a paying guest, I had to stand and explain to him even though everything was already done with the owner. It left a dull aftertaste. The gym was cumbersome to visit and very poorly equipped. To begin with, every time you go there, you should go to the manager, sign up on a list, follow him so that he unlocks. All this trouble instead of just letting my card work for the gym. The gym is small with old equipment. The tv and radio do not work.
E2 apartment: As in previous reviews (2014), the apartment is poorly equipped, dusty porcelain, broken coffee maker, kitchen cabinet with worn out list. Just like the reviews in 2014, there is a comprehensive description for television, but it still doesn't work (5 years later). Many spotlights are broken. The apartment is very dark, and the patio has no sun after about 13-14.Just above the apartment, it seems to live permanently a Russian-speaking woman with a child. She neither understands English nor Spanish. We tried to say (when she was dragging furniture in the middle of the night) that it sounded awful and that we couldn't sleep because of it. Her children are screaming and running all the time (then it is booming in the apartment). The manager and his wife Mimmi were anything but nice. Fully agree with previous reviews describing Mimmi as unpleasant, intrusive, patronizing. She behaves like she owns the complex in a patronizing manner.
For example: the locking system works poorly as the cards are very worn with rips in the magnetic strip. When this was mentioned, I was only told that I had the card too close to the mobile phone. I explained that I did not have it, and that it works after you have pressed it in the lock about 10 times (however, it is quite tiring that every time you stand and hold the card for a few minutes each time).
The pool area is wonderfully nice. However, during our stay there was renovation in the area during the day, it was difficult to sit out because of all the noise, and it was difficult to concentrate on reading or hearing what the other said.

So this was our 10th stay at Brian's apartment so this alone must speak volumes for a review.

The apartment is beautifully kept and to a very very high standard. It is super luxurious with all mod cons and has everything you could possibly need. It is very spacious with a dining table and a big patio table outside on the patio/garden over looking the pool and the sea. Truly wonderful views. There are sun loungers on the private patio as well.

The bedrooms have so much hanging space and drawers plus dressing tables with hair dryer and plenty of mirrors!! There are even English plug points too!! Very modern bathrooms and a jacuzzi bath, walk in shower etc. Bathroom towels, towelling bath robes. The lounge area has a huge sofa/(this can be pulled out to become a double bed if needed), a large tv with English channels, DVD player, music system.

From the apartment's private pretty garden and patio it is only a few steps down to the massive swimming pool with cabanas, a bridge, fountains, water falls, palm trees, flowers. There are lots of sun loungers and parasols around the pool. There is a shallow area for babies and young children. There is a small pool bar that also serves lunches and ice creams. Fantastic selection of homemade salads or paella etc - Wonderful atmosphere.

Marazul is very secure with secure gates from the pool allowing you straight out to the beach which again is only a few more steps away. There are some new pathways next to the beach or walk along the actual beach where you can walk to Laguna Village with all its restaurant. The Kempinski hotel is right next door with its restaurants too. I used to stay there for my holidays before I discovered Marazul!!! I much prefer Brian's apartment.

Marazul has an indoor pool and a gym.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed staying at Brian's apartment E5. You will be booking up again I'm sure!!

We chose the Mar Azul as we had seen the outside (very nice) having visited the area for the last 3 years staying close ish in a hotel.

Maybe our expectations were too high, but tired is my best description – the communal areas like gym and spar are very poor (if open), un-staffed and unloved. The grounds and pool are very well kept and really interesting and mature. Choose your apartment carefully as we were later in the year – no sun whatsoever on our terrace so you will need a sunbed in the grounds, so difficult to grasp the sun which is what we were there for ! The outside pool is freezing but we were late in the year so not a fair assessment but the indoor pool (reiterate if open) is small and unappealing.

Be careful of your apartment choice, clearly reading reviews some are of a high standard – we were in E2 (E4 is the same owner and same standard) which is very tired and in need of a dam good clean and referb. If you are coming from a 5 star hotel – probably like us you will be disappointed if you use the same owner as we have.

Our biggest moan is the staff, they have security who are frankly that, they are there to do the minimum and service is not on the agenda (I have now read another review of this and laughed as the description of one is spot on) they are there to rule not serve.

Also this area as a whole is very close to a motorway, the beach is poor, you will need a hire car to get anywhere as the road walk and beach are not best for decent shoes and the road is simply dangerous if walking to the close (and very good) Laguna Village for dinner. The hotel (Kempinski) have blocked your access to Laguna Village so you have to walk on the motorway hard shoulder – trust me once will be enough !! The Kempinski itself is poor food wise, very very expensive and no atmosphere whatsoever, so you need to venture further afield.

We really wanted to like the Mar Azul, but we were unlucky with our apartment, its east facing aspect and the fact the resort is quite poorly managed from a customer service point of view. If you are just using as a base, then if you choose an apartment with a good review, it will be a great location for that type of holiday.

(One more note - the build is poor, luckily we had no neighbours either side, but above you hear every footstep, so that will be an issue if you get a noisy one !)

Response from Brian50, Owner at Mar Azul Resort Estepona
Responded Dec. 17, 2014
I understand the situation that Jonathen found himself in, and to point, I sympathize with him. The main problem.....choice of apartment. Unlike the majority of holiday resort accommodation, the rooms, or in this case entire apartments, are independently owned. So, the apartments can vary with regard to :- condition, furnishing, decoration, cleanliness, the location within the resort (which will effect how much Sun it gets, and when), views from, facilities provided within the apartment, and those in their garden or terrace as the case may be. In a nutshell, some are nicer than others. But how do you discover which are the good, and the not so good ?......the tripadvisor reviews tell you ! If you prefer Sun most of the day 'till late afternoon, an apartment on the Gibraltar side (Blocks E & F) of the resort may well suit you best. If the evening Sun is more important to you, you may prefer an apartment on the Marbella side (Blocks A & B & C). The main road (N340 / A7) does runs very close to the coast along much of the Costa del Sol, but the design of the Mar Azul Resort avoids ANY road noise to the lovely gardens, to all pools, and to MOST of the apartments. If the review of a particular apartment doesn't mention a noise problem, there isn't one, because they would if there was. Regarding the indoor leisure club :- In October 2014 there was a problem with a leak through the ceiling in the spa area, which was at the time of Jonathen's visit, and I suspect that this may have give him a poor impression. That problem has now been rectified, and we apologize for the problem. The spa is open all year round, and our reception / security staff permit our guests through their reception area as required. If maintenance work needs to be carried out, all owners are given notice, and they would be expected to inform their guests. If indeed a guest's holiday is effected, a refund would normally be offered. Between the months of October and April, some facilities, such as the sauna, may be turned off to conserve energy, but our reception staff will ensure that they are fully functional if given a few hours forward warning. The inside pool is heated all though the year, and the water is maintained to the highest quality of hygiene. Regarding the Laguna Village, an eclectic collection of chic shops, character restaurants, leisure clubs, cocktail bars and cafes built right on the beach, and just a 7 minute walk from the Mar Azul Resort. In the Summer months the delightful seven minute walk to it could include a fine pathway through the attractive grounds of the 5 star Kempinski Hotel, past an ancient watch-tower, and alongside a nature reserve where terrapins, rock-martins and parakeets can all be observed. But you may get some sand in your best shoes. AND, in the off-season the demands of the walk become a little greater, as the River Padron may well flow between you and it ! Okay, the alternative approach to the Laguna Village does include a stretch right next to the main coastal road, but it can surely not be described as a "hard-shoulder", because there is an unmentioned and very substantial steel crash barrier between you and the traffic. Having walked the pathway many hundreds of times my honest appraisal is that there is more danger in crossing any main road in Marbella, Seville, or Malaga. In fairness, I should mention the constriction in the pathway, on either side of the bridge over the River, which may make this pathway impossible for wheel-chairs and the like, but otherwise the bridge provides a fine view of the aforementioned nature reserve. And finally on this subject, our helpful 24 hour reception / security staff will be delighted to arrange a third option, namely a taxi, which will just add a relatively small financial addition to the cost of your night out at the Laguna Village, or Cruisos Beach Bar. And whilst mentioning our reception / security personnel, may I tell you a little more about husband & wife team Mimi & Marco. For the last 8 years they have provided the most excellent service to the Mar Azul community, and as far as I am aware, in all that time, there has been no breach of security, or unwanted intruders on the Resort. Without doubt this contributes to the feeling of well-being on the Mar Azul Resort, promoting the relaxing ambiance in this peaceful oasis on a very lively coastlne. The services of Mimi and Marco have been praised in several reviews. But they have a difficult job trying to keep everyone happy. Sometimes there may be a conflict of interest. For example, a guest may have signed a rental agreement agreeing to vacate a holiday apartment at a given time in order to facilitate the thorough cleaning of the apartment in time for the next guest's arrival later in the same day. A tricky situation when the vacating guest finds better things to do with their time than leave at the agreed time, ......but Mimi & marco will be on the case, and ensure fairness prevails, even if someone leaves upset. But if M & M didn't take their job seriously, the next guests could arrive to an uncleaned apartment, and face an unfair and unnecessary delay before THEY could enter their holiday home. And the most common complaint in any holiday environment with a swimming pool.....guests leaving their towels on loungers and disappearing for hours !! But Mimi & Marco don't stand for that, in the interest of the majority, but may not gain friends by insisting that our pool rules are complied with. Having reception duties in addition to their security duties, M & M are in the font line when a guest has a complaint about their apartment, and if they can help with the problem, they will always do so, even though it is not in their job description. But they cannot be responsible for poor maintenance within an apartment, because that is the responsibility of the owner. Again......check the reviews about the individual apartments, and if you chose to book one with no reviews, or poor reviews, that is not bad luck. Out of 53 Tripadvisor reviews about the Mar Azul Resort, 3 have given it less than 5 stars out of 5. We hope to welcome you to our holiday homes.

Hi.
My family and I just returned from Brian Colling's Apartment, E5 at Mar Azul, Estepona.
Brian's apartment really is lovely. The best complement I can give it is that we felt utterly at home, didn't want to leave and are already thinking about when we can go back. The furnishings are to a really high standard, the beds are comfy and the apartment has pretty much everything you need to have a really lovely holiday. The complex is great and we spent most of our fortnight splashing in and out of the pool with the kids (7 and 5). The pool is just amazing with very friendly lifeguards.
I used the gym several times while there and it has everything you need and is clean. The Mar Azul location is fine if you have a car - if you don't, just be aware. Local supermarket is a mile away... another highlight is Laguna Village, a great place to walk to in the evenings for a nice dinner or just a drink and a lookaround.

Local highlights - Laguna Village (Pappardelle and Goucho), the Sol Buggies, the run into Estepona and back.

5* holiday. We'll be back. Thanks Brian. !!

We have just come back from a lovely week in apartment E5. It was immaculate and extremely well equipped, everything had been thought of. The outdoor pool looked great and is very well looked after, but being early April it was too cold to swim in. We used the indoor pool which was lovely. The gym was very useful as well. We would highly recommend this apartment, Brian goes the extra mile to make your stay comfortable and pleasurable.
There are three of us Mum, Dad and 9 year old.
