This place was perfect for my stay. The room was cleanand spacious. Even though it was across from the tea and coffee area (free 24 hours a day) they would have these adorable signs to keep quiet because there was a baby sleeping. They provided a crib and there was still enough room for our belongings. Private bathroom was small but it's japan. Bed was comfy. Staff was super friendly and spoke pretty good English. They had brochures and information on pretty much everywhere. Great maps to get anywhere. Finally the location was perfect. Easy bus ride to all attractions. It is not walking distance to the station but I did not have a JR pass. Plus most Kyoto attractions are in bus routes not train. The nice bread and drinks in the morning more than made up the 600 yen day pass for the bus or the 460 yen round trip to the station for day trips. A worthy investment as it's easy to hop from one attraction to the next on the bus. Stay here you won't regret it!
i went to japan and korea over march and april and stayed in a number of places and this was definitely my favourite. the owner/manager was so nice and accommodating, the rooms were such a nice change from the shoeboxes i had experienced earlier on my trip. The owner/manager gave me a map of kyoto and showed me the best places to visit, even did a deal on electric bike hire over the 2 days i was there and put the charger in my room so i could charge the battery and go off exploring again the next day. It was really well located and within walking distance to Nijo castle. I'm a travel agent with a large travel company in Australia and recommend this place to my own customers who travel to the area. will be coming back for another stay in October next year.
4 nights at Uraraka Guest House in July 2019.
As we got to the front desk, we received a very warm welcome from Yoko. The room was faultless. The place is quiet, slightly away from the city center, at walking distance to some main Kyoto attractions and very easy to get to. Bus stop in front of the hotel. Less than 30 minutes walk from Kyoto center if you care for a walk, as we did a couple of time.
We had the option of having breakfast included in the price of our room.
The staff was quick to advise us on the places we wanted to visit and also recommend other sights.
Really, a perfect holiday for us.
Thank you very much to our hosts
The biggest problem is the location. This was our first visit to Kyoto, so we didn't really know where to stay, turns out this wasn't the best choice. Although we were within walking distance of Nijo-jo, everything else worth seeing was at least a 20 minute bus ride away. As Kyoto is not well serviced by the metro, and buses were quite expensive, we would definitely stretch for a hotel closer to Kyoto station next time.
The hotel itself is fine, with everything you'd need, limited breakfast (just a collection of sweet breads), but the staff are friendly and if you're lucky and you get a room at the back, you get a nice view of the mountains.
We were pleasantly surprised that our room was not just a cubby hole but had room for a TV stand, desk, and queen size bed. We were happy with the amenities, free breakfast of a wide variety of breads, coffee or tea. The dining area is open 24 hours for hot or cold water, microwave or convection oven. Very clean with fresh towels daily. Just a block from the bus stop. The clerks are very helpful and knowledgeable.
