Each summer we travel to the Mendocino coast to escape the heat here in the Sacramento area.
This year, with Covid, was a real concern but we again traveled to the Mendocino Village to stay at the MacCallum House Inn,where we again chose the suite property about four blocks up the hill from the main property.
We had the Napoleon Suite with excellent amenities and a great deck overlooking the village and the ocean.
Not only was Covid a concern, but California wildfires had exploded in multiple areas of Northern California but Mendocino remained safe, cool at 65-70 degree highs, and smoke free.
Only letdown was the usual excellent breakfasts were not served due to their kitchen being closed the two days we stayed.
Dining in the village requires planning, reservations, and some changes due to these difficult times.
However, our stay was outstanding as we have traveled there for years and stayed here several previous times.
The traveler must call ahead, realizing that there are real changes to the nature of travel, dining, and availability of usual stores and restaurants.
We booked a two night stay at the MacCallum House for a "Superior Room" through Chase Rewards. Upon realizing that there are multiple different Superior Rooms on the property, we called the front desk to see if we would be able to pick a specific Superior Room during our stay. I spoke to Krista and she informed me that we were assigned a Deluxe Room instead and that all other rooms were booked for a wedding.
A Deluxe Room does not come with the same amenities as a Superior Room and some are smaller than Superior Rooms. We would have only found out upon arrival that we were not getting the same room as the one reserved had I not call ahead of time.
She explained that the rate that I paid for matches the rate of a Deluxe Room. But the rate that she quoted was not inclusive of the points I used as part of my payment, and we would have gladly paid more money if we were getting what we reserved for.
The only solution provided was to "cancel our reservation and find somewhere else to stay" or stay at the assigned Deluxe Room.
Warning to anyone who books a room from a third party website to make sure and confirm that you are indeed getting what you reserved.
As a would be guest, we were disappointed at the lack of help to remedy the situation. I highly suggest that MacCallum house update their listings and make sure that whatever is made available online, matches the rate that they are looking to charge and actual vacancies.
Falsely advertising a room that isn't actually available makes for a very unpleasant experience and creating a good experience for visitors should be a hospitality industry member's #1 goal.
This place is a joke. The walls are really thin. I feel like I was sleeping In my neighbors’ room.
The carpet is disgusting. The service is terrible. I didn’t see one person of the staff the whole time I was there. They didn’t clean the room.
Really find somewhere else to go. It’s dirty expensive and not worth it !!!!!
We should have read the reviews before we booked. On checking in we were given a map to their ‘suites’ up the hill, on the edge of town, and adjacent to the cemetery. While the room was adequate (but expensive) for a three and half star property, the website does not detail that any rooms are not at the advertised site address.
We just stayed for one night in Mendocino on our way north. We had the Greenhouse room - number 11, which was located in the garden.
It is spacious with a hot tub in the patio area and a large bathroom.
Nice room but it could be hot as there was only window which opened.
