This trip was very much looked forward to as it was rearranged 3 times from our anniversary in December due to covid 19 lockdowns. The staff did a great job in rescheduling our booking and keeping us informed. This was a dinner B&B special offer.
Accommodation: Our room was small however it was very clean with modern decor and furnishings and a comfy bed. We had an issue with the glass shower screen in the bathroom which had no rubber seal along the bottom. We didn’t notice this until we took a shower and the water ran off the screen and flooded the floor. We mopped this up with towels as it was slippery and informed the front desk and asked for it to be fixed. The lady on duty organised some fresh towels and said she would try and find a seal and ensure it was fixed and remove the wet towels. On return from dinner however this wasn’t done. The next morning there was no hot water for a shower and no explanation or apology when we informed the desk.
Food: For dinner we both had starters which were good. I had fish and chips which was excellent in both quality and quantity. My husband made the mistake of having the lamb which was a small portion on a small plate in comparison to mine and he felt the lamb was not of good quality. We did not have desserts
Breakfast was very good even if the service was quite slow. The staff were generally very friendly and keen to please.
The location was a long drive for us but generally worth the 6 month wait to stay at the Crown. One could think as we were only staying the one night there was no urgency to rectify the shower/hot water issues. Had it not been for these issues this would have been a very nice stay. Having travelled extensively and stayed in many different standards of hotel it’s how these customer issues are managed by the staff that make all the difference to ones impressions.
Two night stay disappointing
No one on reception despite arriving at check in time of day, member of kitchen staff who did walk in made no effort to help us or call someone.
Room not as website description dark and gloomy, not value for money.
Communal garden could be nice, although dogs should not be allowed to use as toilet area
Dining room very pleasant however table dirty from previous night service, cups arrived unclean from dishwasher.
Second night spoilt by gas problem, I understand this was totally beyond hotel control (resulted in no hot water before checking out next day) however no attempt made to inform us of situation. Only contact was 10 minutes before a dinner reservation when told we would have to make our own plans as not serving any meals, no mention of lack of hot water. staff communication and training sadly lacking.
We stayed one night at the Crown and were very well looked after. The room was lovely, dinner excellent and good selection of wines. The one thing that is most obvious at The Crown is its staff - they clearly get on well and have a great respect for each other and that shows. They are all very cheerful and attentive. We would most definitely recommend.
Stayed for the night last night. Went based on excellent food reviews. Arrived and left to find our room which was very small but clean. On arrival told only two slots left for breakfast, either 8.15 or 10am. Was told dinner was at 6.30 for us. Questioned this as we realised we had prebooked it for 7.30. This wasnt a problem. Towels left on the bed as nowhere to hang them in the bathroom. Nowhere to put toiletries either. No toiletries whatsoever in room. Had to ask at reception for shower gel.
Went to dinner. Ordered calamari, well i have never encountered such a mean portion of calamari. Must have been about 4 extremely thin slices deep fried with about 4 small pieces of chorizo but lots of salad leaves. No substance to the starter. Partner had a nice starter though. Had steak for main which was cooked perfectly but beef dripping chips were rustic and taste wasnt to my liking, but that could be me! Salad leaves with few slices of shallots accompanied this. Partner had pork chop which was as tough as old boots. I had a dessert of rice pudding that was awful. No sweetness at all and quite an unpleasant accompanying flavour. Partner had a solid slice of polenta cake.
When waitress asked if everything was ok we mentioned the pork chop. She apologised and said would take this off the bill (at £18.50).
Breakfast. Service slow. A backlog waiting to be cooked and go out apparently. Had toast whilst waiting and served on a plate with butter. Turned the slices over which were as burnt as could be, black and charred. Cooked breakfast was good. Waitress noticed the black toasts and took away whist laughing. Another plate of toast arrived at their behest, perfectly cooked but no apology made.
Checked out and paid. Pork chop not taken off the bill but cheaper £7 dessert was.
Sorry but we cannot recommend this hotel and will not be going back.
We spent a night here this week ( Wed) after a rather stressful few days elsewhere. A warm and friendly member of staff checked us into Skylark, and we were so happy with our snug, warm and comfortable room.
All staff were really helpful, polite and offered too service. Gaby who served us on Wednesday night and who we saw again at breakfast was superb. Nothing was too much for her and she was an absolute natural at making us feel relaxed and looked after without any hassling. I was rather stressed on arrival and by the time I left was a different person. Our dogs were really relaxed and slept very well. When I had to take them down for a last toilet stop at 1130pm there was a lovely male member of staff laying up for breakfast who was so kind and helpful he really needs a mention.
Totally recommend for relaxing, food was delicious and the whole package was brilliant. I didnt want to leave and will be back again.
