Reading all those negative comments really makes me wonder if those complaining really have been to the same Dimitris Villa I have been returning to time and again (10+ by now, I think...) ever since 2001.

Reading those "Never in life does this hotel have tree stars." makes me wonder if those complaining have any hint of an idea how those stars are granted and that the organization granting the star classification uses standardized measures for any hotel they classify.

Reading those "We were not able to communicate with anyone in English beyond a few words." makes me wonder how bad/un-understandable the "English" of those complaining could possibly have been, as I have had both ex- and intensive discussions (in English!) with Eleni and Marianthi on various topics and we never failed to understand each other.

Reading those "Everyone was unpleasant, impolite, turning us down." complaints makes me wonder how unpleasant and impolite those complaining possibly were to start with, as I have at no time experienced any such behaviour from any of the people who run Dimitris Villa. Ever.

Reading those "The breakfast was meagre, no selection of food beyond basics, just one or two kinds of bread and jam." comments makes me wonder if any of those complaining ever was forced to stand up hungry (unless they wanted to, just to enjoy having a reason for complaining) or not able to go and see the nearest supermarket to get what they considered missing on the buffet.

Reading those "The rooms are small, dark, uncomfortable." comments makes me wonder if any those complaining considered the vast amount of hours they acutally/possibly spent in the room and the price they paid for it and what luxury equipment it precisely was they were missing and had expected to find/be provided with.

I could go on and on with this list. However, this would take us nowhere. Neither fast nor slow.

Fact is: I have been staying with Eleni and family for almost 15 years, on and off. And rest assured I wouldn't have if I was dissatisfied with what I found in Matala every time I returned. And in all those years I did see fellow travellers whose main purpose it seemed to be to find things to complain about, rather than kicking back, relaxing and soaking up the Southern Cretan way of life.

If a five star luxury 500 beds all inclusive animation program all you can eat buffet triple-pool waterpark tennis courts wear long pants for the restaurant haute cuisine anonymous kind of holiday is what you're looking for and if anything below these expectations causes you to whine about what you actually get: Just stay away from Matala and Dimitris Villa. Go to the north coast. Have fun with thousands of other people, crammed on the beach, congesting streets and restaurants. Enjoy it. Please. And pay the rightful price for that sort of "holiday".

However, if you feel like indulging yourself to the relaxed, laid-back way of life in a more secluded spot of the island, letting your mind drift with the (rather scarce) cloulds coming in from the sea or over the mountains, if you understand the meaning of "Today is life - tomorrow never comes.", if the (admittedly) not so state-of-the-art-ish equipment of the rooms doesn't cause you to complain above and beyond reason, if you don't mind the short stroll from Dimitris Villa to down"town" Matala for the beach or some food in the evening, if you feel like (as someone else put it) "Arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend." is your way of making a vacation on Crete a special one:

Please join the ones who enjoy staying with Eleni and Marianthi at Dimitris Villa. Rest assured, you will not regret it. And if you treat the ones who host you with respect, you will be receiving just the same respect back from them. Even if they do not speak a word of German, English or anything except Greek. It's their personality that counts. And you will leave a bright smile on their faces when you walk past with a smile on your face and a cheerful "kalimera" on your lips.

Trust me. Been there. Done that. Enjoyed it. Every single time.

Dimitris Villas in Matala, is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

I would never have agreed to this place had they shown one photo of the rooms or known it would be so bad & in a state of such disrepair.

The pictures on the site link portrayed a nice pool & reception area- no rooms. And they are horrible.
This is what you need to know about this place:

Poop in toilet upon arrival.
Floor wet & slippery in hallway by our rooms and dripping down the stairs that access our rooms from condensation from the air conditioners and drip bucket not being emptied,
We asked them to do something about it upon arrival & they said they would.
This morning-the tile floor was wet again with no rug or towel & I slipped & fell & really hurt my knee.

Only working light in room was one bare hanging fluorescent bulb in center of room from ceiling,
Loose wires sticking out of walls.
No blankets on beds or in rooms.
Top sheets folded on top of bed. When we got back from dinner, everything was dark & shut down (9 pm). We realized then that one bed was missing a top sheet so we had to share a bed to be covered.
Only one outlet that worked in each room.
Missing panes in window in bathroom.
Shower head just hanging with no hook to hold it up.
Went to the pool upon arrival for 30 minutes to let the room cool off and upon returning to room, was reprimanded by two people for leaving the air conditioning on.
Water pressure too low to be able to wash my long, thick hair.
Dog chained & barking below our window woke us up early. .
Beds were box springs - poking body all night. No mattresses.
Trash on grounds.
Arrogant daughter of elderly owners who refused to take any responsibility.

Dear Sir I want to thank you for your choose to visit Matala for your holidays . About the room comments when you come you see that you have two options for your holidays : 1) to use the old rooms in Stergios Villa (Low Cost Package) 2) to use the New Rooms in Dimitris Villa (Elegance Package) As you decide to use the option No1 because is the half price from the option No2 probably you forget to write this. We had a pleasant time at Dimitris Villa (2 days + 2 more days because we liked it). It is 200m away from the beach but it takes no time to get there. The pool side is cool. Don't expect a 4 stars, but you'll have a great time for sure.

Nice location, just a leisurely 5min stroll from beach & village which is set in a beautiful cove with crystal blue waters, full of marine life (they even have turtles coming up to nest now & again). Village has about 20-30 restaurants & bars, traditional with good fish & grilled dishes as you'd expect. These are all perched on the cliffs around the cove so it's very scenic. Don't expect jumpin' clubs & sports bars..I found one bar only that had a TV with sports etc. & a few have live music.
Hotel has about 30 rooms with 2-3 beds, shower, bath, fridge & AC all included. Simple but clean & comfy. Lovely pool, which is always nice & quiet, there were only ever a max of 8 people around it. With about 20 sunbeds you never have to worry about getting one. Location is nice and private and pool area is always attended so you'd feel really safe with kids there. We would leave personal belongings around the pool and nothing was ever disturbed. Hotel is staffed by Elena and family - They are VERY obliging and can't do enough for you.. for example, we were walking to village with cases for the airport bus, Elena passed us in car, immediately turned round & offered us a lift. We would love to come here again.

I was very concerned when I read previous reviews, but on arriving at Villa Dimitri was pleasantly surprised.

OK so the showers don't meet English standards and the rooms are fairly basic but the location and peacefulness there more than makes up for it.

The swimming pool is in a lovely tranquil setting overlooking the mountains, and on many occasions there were only a few people there.

It's a five minute walk to Matala itself at a pleasant stroll and we found it nice to be a bit out. As for the resort of Matala, I have never stayed anywhere with a nicer or more friendly relaxed attitude.

Enough said that I'm now saving for next year.
