This place is all about peace and tranquillity; an escape from the usual hotel polish, glitz and spin.
I could list 50+ things that need repairing, refurbishing or replacing at the Marco Polo, but to do so would be missing the point. Here there is karma; the only concessions to the 21st Century being a good Wi-Fi internet connection and good air conditioning.
We stayed here for the second time in February this year, having stayed here previously in 2016 and I’m sure it won’t be our last.
There are eight reasonably sized chalet style rooms and a really good Italian restaurant and a swimming pool in a beautiful garden setting, attracting many exotic butterflies, birds and lizards.
The Marco Polo is at Chaweng Noi Beach; a lovely strip of unspoilt white sand only 100 meters away across the road. Although one end of the beach has become a little “Ibiza-rized” since our last stay in 2016.
All the staff are great and the place is cleaned and maintained, albeit a little rustic. It would have been nice to have a desk and chair and tea/coffee making facilities in the room and more than just cold water in the wash basin. Although there are good electric showers in the rooms.
The Marco Polo is located about 2km from Chaweng’s main drag and there is a taxi rank outside the hotel, although like most of Thailand’s Islands now the taxis are run by a cartel; so expect to pay European prices; £6.00 into town and £6.00 out.
To avoid using the taxis, we hired a car for our stay which I would recommend, or if you’ve got the nerve hire a scooter.
The place is run by Richard and Min who took over from Ricardo and Lydia in 2016 and make charming hosts. I’m not too sure though if they think of this as a restaurant with rooms or a hotel with a restaurant. Either way it needs a small amount of money spending on it to brush the aging cobwebs away and just make it feel a bit more 2019.
We had one of the best family vacations here! The hosts were very friendly and accommodating by added an extra mattress in the room, renting a motorbike (delivered to the resort!) loaning us beach towels and snorkelling mask to tips on the best beaches! We enjoyed our stay so much we extended the number of nights and they gave us a better rate!!! Amazing hosts! The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The restaurant's Italian food was amazing and delicious, a must try in Ko Samui! The grounds are beautiful and meticulous kept, as is the pool. It was so nice to enjoy a drink while siting outside our room under the covered terrace while our kids slept in the room! A wonderful vacation, thanks for the hospitality!
At ~2000thb/room I would have expected better maintenance. Toilet didn't work, doors would not shut etc. Minor grievances that would have been ignored if the price was lower. Good, proper Italian food. Gnocchi was delicious.
Stayed for 2 weeks in January with my family and some friends. We were split across 2 rooms, our family room was spacious and good value for money. Mosquito's were a problem. Seemed to be in our room every night. And small black flies were plentiful in our bathroom night after night which was annoying. Breakfast was limited and could be improved - I think this would make the resort so much better, especially for people with long bookings like ours.
However, owner was lovely. We got the rooms for a great rate, the Italian restaurant in house is 10/10! Amazing pizza! The resort was quiet so great for us with young children. They arranged motorbikes for us, and a place to get laundry done next done. Great location if you have transport, not far from Chwaeng and fisherman. And right opposite the Samui Beach Bar which was lovely.
This was my second stay at this hotel and although it is under new management, it still represents great value. Service is friendly and efficient and the new owners are extremely helpful. Breakfast is included in the room rate. The Italian restaurant is open most nights of the week and the food is the best Italian I have eaten on the Island in many visits.
