I have spent 1 night (August 11/12, 2018) in room 115 – a double with private bathroom in single occupancy. First thing to know is that Rustico e Singelo is the name of a company that owns the place, but this name is not known by anyone (taxi drivers or locals) – you have to look for Residencial Santo Domingo, the name on the sign at the entrance and that is known by everyone (I had to call the property from the taxi to obtain directions due to the name confusion). The house is an old one and seems to have been lost in time, frozen at cca 1900, as did the room (the bathroom sink had two separate taps for cold and hot water) and the buildings around – quite dilapidated and giving a strange sense of peace with a drop of sadness. There is no elevator but the owners helped with the luggage on the stairs. They were very nice but unfortunately they spoke only Portuguese – to announce the time of check-in I asked in the intercity bus for someone that spoke both English and Portuguese to translate for me on the phone. What was really modern (high speed) was the WiFi – from a VIP Club (that did not seem to exist anymore ?!?!). The price was very good, 20 eur/night. Vila Real in itself is a bit of a challenge – not really used with tourists: the main attraction, Palacio Matteus, is not signposted and I had difficulties finding the bus station to go there. There are very few people speaking English/French. There is not much to see in the city itself – Sao Pedro Church is beautiful however and there is at least one nice restaurant in town (the only one I tried): Loja do Covilhete. The tourist office was closed and asking all the hotels in the central area I could not find a map – there is however an interactive electronic screen somewhere on the street, near the tourist office. For orientation, information and directions the best is to ask very young people, they generally speak English and can help.…
