What a lovely place to stay. I needed somewhere easy, quiet and calm and this fit the bill perfectly - and best poached eggs ever! Debbie is a lovely host. The room and shower were spotless and the bed sooo comfy.

A nice b and b which ticks all the boxes - clean well appointed en suite room with comfy bed; excellent breakfast and a host who wants to please.
If one wanted to be picky it would have been nice if there had been garden furniture to use as the weather was very nice and if a bottle opener is supplied why not go the whole hog and provide 2 wine glasses?

It takes a cab to get there from the train station, but it's worth it. It's secluded, clean, quiet.
Plus the neighborhood tavern is just 5min away (on foot).

I stayed at this B&B cottage in March for a couple of days. Great location in tranquil countryside with lots of fresh air. As for the B&B, very comfortable bed and the settings were immaculate, beautiful with rustic but modern feel. The reception area was also very nice with comfortable furniture, cozy with adequate lighting at nights, and a very homely feel. Everything in the rooms and the shower rooms were nicely organized, and it terms of cleanness, this place was spotless. The shower was amazing matching the showers in 5 star hotels. I stayed in a single room for my first night with a single bed and shared bathroom, but then upgraded to an en-suite double room. Both rooms were beautiful and clean.
The owner/manager of this place was a lady called Debbie who also ran the place preparing breakfast and dealing with all the admin and all day-to-day aspects of running the place by herself. I am not sure if she also lived at the cottage. I think there were only 3 rooms available for guests, and she had to deal with all aspects of running the place by herself. Despite all the positives above, however, there are other reasons I’m giving this B&B 3 stars only;
Firstly, in any hotel or B&B where the breakfast is included, the guests are entitled to attend breakfast within specific time period set out by the hotel or B&B , i.e. between 7 and 10, 6 and 10 etc. Although this rule did apply to this place , the lady wanted me to say EXACTLY at what time I would attend breakfast everyday!!! I told her that I was on holiday, and my turn-up time might differ from day to day depending on what time I wished to wake up each morning but I told her that I would still be coming down at the normal breakfast serving time specified by the B&B( can’t remember their exact breakfast time). But she was insisting, in a ‘Polite Way’ that I at least needed to give her a time bracket of 20 minute ( i.e. between 8-8.20 for instance) for having breakfast!! She then said she would leave a piece of paper and pen on the hall’s table so I put the time I would attend breakfast the day after!!! From that date onwards, on my way back from Brighton, I noticed a paper and pen on the table waiting for me each night.
Secondly, I had some documents and personal belongings with me and did not want house keeping/cleaning on a specific day when my stuff were all over the place. I had only moved into a double room the day before so the room did not need cleaning. On my way out, I told the lady that I did not need cleaning, which was a polite way of asking for further privacy by not having anyone in my room for cleaning etc. I even put up the ‘No Cleaning’ sign on the door. When I came back that evening, I noticed that she did enter the room disregarding my wishes; the room was made, that’s how I knew she entered!!
Thirdly, I felt the lady was not very comfortable around me during my stay. I am normally travelling solo, and I look quite porty with a bit of resemblance to Shrek!!! I am always polite especially when I am at more private B&Bs like this, or where I feel there is a ‘Local’ tendency at a place. This is a very ‘English’ village/area, and maybe the lady was not used to people with other ethnic background staying at her B&B hence feeling uncomfortable/nervous around me.
All in all, the lady had a bit of ‘Polite’ but my-house-my-rules attitude towards me. The above incidents made me wonder whether I was welcome at this place. After all, no matter how immaculate and beautiful a place is, if you don’t receive the treatment you have paid for then you would not want to come back! It was hard for me to write this review commenting on the hospitality I received given almost all the reviews, so far, are positive above the lady. But unfortunately, I did not receive the hospitality that others experienced, for reasons unknown to me.
My advice to you about this place is this; if you are a couple travelling together, or mother and son etc, then this place is ideal for you and I’m sure you would be received warmly. But if you are a single porty man looking a bit like Shrek then make sure you take a Fiona with you before staying at this cottage so as to take away the nervousness from the lady who is running the place! But if you look like Shrek AND you are green too then you’d better off not to stay at this place even if Fiona was with you!!

Stayed at Lantern Cottage in August so we could travel to Brighton easily for shopping and eating out. The cottage was very well appointed and the owner made every effort to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The breakfast was lovely and my coffee was made especially strong which illustrates the attention to detail that the owner goes to make your stay great. We walked to the station in the morning and got a train into Brighton which was very easy and convenient. I would be very happy to stay here if I visit Brighton again. It is much better than staying at one of those impersonal chains and very good value for money.

We would definitely recommend this lovely cottage as an ideal place to stay for access to the south downs and Brighton. Rooms were spacious, breakfasts were good and the bed was very comfortable and in a really peaceful part of the countryside, set well back from the main road. Will stay here again!

This overnight stay was a birthday present, combined with a vineyard tour. Despite being tucked away behind other houses the instructions to find it were excellent. Greeted by a large, friendly black cat we knew we would like it, and we did. Everywhere is spotless, comfortable and quiet ... we slept better than we do at home! To top it off there was a lovely breakfast with anything you might wish for too. I just wish we could have stayed here much longer.
As a bonus The Greyhound pub was less than 5 minutes walk away, with good food at reasonable prices for the area (which is recognized as generally being expensive to visit and live in!). Apparently there are other places to eat within walking distance too but we didn't have time to try them.
If we're ever in the area again we will definitely stay here.

The proprietor Debbie has the highest of standards, with a maximum of say 8 guests, you more or less get individual attention. The property occupies a very quiet cul-de-sac,with the actual cottage presenting a quality facade.

I normally stay in hotels when working away but was recommended the Lantern Cottage B&B and thought I would give it a try.
Well I couldn't have been more satisfied. The house is delightful, as is the host and the room very tastefully decorated. I enjoyed 2 very comfortable nights there, along with the best breakfast a man could ask for.
Everything was just as it should be, from the crisp white linen bedding and soft fluffy white towels to the varied selection of cereal, fruits, yogurts etc. for breakfast ~ (along with traditional english cooked breakfast of course).
I will certainly be going back but perhaps for a leisure break next time.

If needing a place to stay in this part of Sussex you might consider one of the well-advertised chain hotels but why would you when you could stay somewhere a little bit different, like Lantern Cottage.
It's in a great location with easy access to Brighton, the South Downs and Gatwick, set back from the main road so beautifully peaceful and quiet. The cottage is beautiful and wonderfully kept. A very warm, friendly and helpful welcome is matched with lovely rooms, blending character with the modern. Family Room was spotlessly clean and spacious, really comfortable and gave me a vey peaceful, restful night's sleep. There were maps, guides and walking leaflets in the room and the cottage has plenty of suggestions for "what to do" during your stay. You might want to check directions to the cottage (as it's tucked neatly off the main road) but it's not too difficult to find and there's ample parking space. Breakfast was delicious, made with care, and the hosting was attentive but not intrusive (just perfect for us). When we stayed it wasn't that much more (price-wise) than a busy chain hotel and you usually get what you pay for. This was fabulous value and we would happily return.
