Nice historic inn with good, spacious (at least the one we had) rooms and very good food. Staff was very friendly and helpful, too.
Also has a nice beer garden for these rare sunny days.
We enjoyed our stay!

Only stayed here one night whilst walking the Cateran trail but would have liked to stay longer. Very comfortable, clean room and welcoming staff. Very tasty meal with great choice from menu and specials. The breakfast was excellent, setting me up for the day's walking.
Excellent bar after a sunny days walk for a quick liquid refreshment. Very welcoming staff, lovely room. Super evening meal and breakfast.
Good selection of food on the menu with specials also. Forgot to add, nearly got lost in the lovely huge bed.

I can't better the answer that BobEllis3 has given and all I would add is that you can strike out in almost any direction from Kirkmichael and find wonderful walking, be it along the valley floor by the river or up into the foothills, and a short drive opens up even more opportunities.
