This was our fifth time at the ranch, and our best visit to date. Head wrangler Victoria made good matches with the horses, and the trails were in good shape. In addition to the riding, we loved just hanging out with the horses in the fields - and having friendly horses pop by our cabin looking for treats. The accommodations are rustic, the atmosphere is casual. Bring bug spray.

The only place I've ever come across where you can go out on your own on unguided trail rides once you've had your check out ride(s). Good horses, fun trails, a once in a lifetime experience. Staff is all friendly and helpful, food is good, desserts are spectacular. Setting is beautiful, with meadows to lope through, pretty forests, pretty lake. Set up like an old Western town. All the retired horses roam freely around the premises, adding to it's appeal.

My 21 year old daughter and I just returned from a wonderful 5 day trip to the Flying U. What an amazing time we had. We felt like family by the time we left and we’re so sad to go. Everyone there made our time so perfect. Charlie and Angela, the wranglers were so helpful with what trails to ride and their care for the horses was so obvious. Charlie took my daughter out to fix fences and allowed her to help wrangle the horses into the corrals our last morning. The kitchen staff were always smiling and the food was just amazing every meal. It is served family style, and every evening the new guests introduce themselves, so that there is a real feeling of community from the start. Debbie in the office, with her big smile, was warm and welcoming and John, the owner, made us feel like part of the Flying U family. We rode most days, although it was very hot, and cooled off at the lake every afternoon. There are over 60,000 acres to ride on, all beautiful vistas. You can choose to ride in the morning, come back for lunch, then go back out in the afternoon, or you can go the whole day and the kitchen will pack you a lunch. John took us out tubing and for boat rides, and the water was the perfect temperature to cool off. There are also canoes and kayaks to use or, if you have a boating license, you can rent a little motor boat. At night the saloon is open for drinks for the over 19 crowd, as well as movies in the theatre for kids, and a fire pit for s’mores. We loved it so much we know we’ll be back next year!!

Its a great place but rental house was disappointing for the price. Basement bathroom was under renovation and basement smelled bad. Unpleasant to sleep there. No hand rails on inside stairs to loft or down to basement. Advertised a Hot tub but not working. If you like coffee, bring your own coffee maker and lots of bottled water as the water is "different". Staff in the lodge and wranglers. are wonderful, including owner and cowboy Steve.

I booked a weekend trip at the Flying U for my mom and I as a Mother's day gift and it was the most fun I've had in a long time. The hospitality at the "U" is fabulous, everyone is warm, welcoming and very laid back. The rules are minimal so you can relax and have a great time. The unguided horseback riding was the highlight for us; the scenery is breathtaking! Riding through aspen groves, open fields, pine forests, around all the many lakes; the trails are endless and it was exhilarating getting lost in the wilderness for hours with only the horses knowing the way home (and they are always happy to lead you back there). Lots of wildlife viewing, especially birds; we saw baby geese, hawks, ducks, pheasants, and lots of deer. We even saw some big "cat" or "bear" prints in the mud! If you're not a rider or too sore for a day, there's still plenty to do. They have a mini theatre on site playing nightly movies like Spider Man 3 for the kids, a games room with pool and a great sitting room in the main lodge for curling up by the fire or listening to the band at night. They have free canoes available across the street on Green Lake for your enjoyment. There's even early morning yoga, archery and you can book a massage. They allow well behaved dogs (mine couldn't come lol) but it was fun having all the guests dogs running around the grounds playing together. We had a great time getting to know all the guests, even making some new friends. The cabins are rustic but so cozy and adorable. Electricity and a wood burning stove but very limited access to Wifi (we needed to sit outside on the porch to get it to work) if you bring your computer (but I would recommend ignoring it if you can!). The natural wonderland of the Flying U is really special; wild flowers everywhere, green grass, just beautiful. If you don't like to get dirty or dusty, this may not be the place for you but I loved it so much I'm going back every year!

We have been going to the Flying U Ranch for a number of years. It is my husbands favorite getaway. I believe its one of the very few places where you can ride unsupervised. It is a real rustic experience. I have rated the rooms and service a 4 just because I do not want to misled readers, it is no Four Seasons, but it is wonderful for what it is.

We often visit the rustic Flying U Ranch southeast of 70 Mile House, and always enjoy our holidays there. It’s Canada’s oldest guest ranch and attracts interesting visitors from throughout the world. The rustic log cabins, barn and lodge were built in the 1880’s, and many of those buildings are still in use. Their creaky floors, wood stoves and lack of plumbing exemplify B.C.’s early ranching history. (A modern bathhouse and laundry is just a short walk from the cabins.) Unfortunately, the original lodge burned to the ground a few years ago. No one was injured, but it was a devastating loss. The previous owners are back and a new log lodge is up and running, with modern amenities and an awesome stone fireplace. We’ve owned many horses over the years, and can guarantee that our Flying U visits have been the most authentic western horse holidays we’ve experienced. WARNING: Do not, under any circumstances, visit the Flying U if you have issues regarding fun, country music, dogs, trustworthy horses, making new friends, home cooking, wildlife, beer, fishing, trail riding, or magnificent sunsets.

I cannot say enough great things about this resort and its AMAZING staff! We stayed for 4 nights and met so many awesome people. The Horses are so well trained that my 7 year old rode for hours like a pro.
The theater is adorable and the saloon has draft beer!
My other child is rather fussy with food and the kitchen prepared him his own meals.

We were able to go tubing every day, The kids learned archery, we fed pigs!

No shortage of fun and opportunities at this AMAZING resort!

The Flying U Ranch was a good experience. I felt it could be a great experience with a few upgrades, that perhaps will occur since the ranch is now under new ownership. I spent a week with two girlfriends. We are all experienced riders who own our own horses. Cabins are rustic but cute. If you are in a duplex cabin, you can hear your neighboring breathing, not snoring, when they sleep. I would highly recommend you request an individual cabin not connected to another. This was very uncomfortable knowing your neighbor could hear everything. Luckily someone was only next to me for 3 nights out of my 7. Beds are hard as rocks, seriously. Food is okay, not great and not a lot of variety. Pancakes, french toast, pancakes again, then french toast casserole with eggs only offered our first and last day.Packed lunches for day rides only have choice of 3 items. Meals are served family style and you must sit with other guest and fill all tables. You are not permitted to sit at a separate table with your own group. Dining room staff was very friendly. Dinners just okay as well. Riding trails are nice, but by end of week we had rode most. Apparently when the ranch was sold in Dec 2015 the new owner only purchased a portion of the land so not as many places to ride as their used to be. Maps are terrible as well as most trail markings. You don't get lost, but you don't necessarily make it to your planned destination, or you do, but then because you were lost you end up loping your horses (we love to lope but were concerned about over doing it, knowing we had the same horse for 7 days) far more than you intended to return on time, as maps don't have distances on them. We did almost 20 miles a day, unintentionally, due to poor maps and felt that our horses were very fatigued by our 5th day. Two of the three of us, switched horses our the first day as the horses we were initially provided were more than we wanted for a week of riding (they both required schooling and we didn't want to spend our week doing this for someone else). We were pleased with our horses after we switched. They were safe, responsive and willing although tired by the end of our week. It seems that even though they advertise 100 horses, they have perhaps closer to 50-70 that are rideable. They were just beginning to purchase 20 more horses when we were there which it seems they need. I would not recommend to beginners as you totally ride on your own and some beginners had difficulty getting their horses to leave the coral. If you are experienced you will do just fine although the corral in the mornings seems a bit un organized, saddles seem to be pretty old, and saddle bags in very poor condition. Think of it more as a place to sleep that rents a horse to you for the week and you will not be disappointed. Bring your own saddle bags and slickers and don't rely on the maps. I have been to 6 other ranches in U.S. The only reason I would return to this one is because you can ride at your own pace without guides, but I would give it a few years to see if the new ownership improves the maps and signage. Its just one of those places you have to try for yourself and form your own opinion. Green Lake is beautiful and the facility overall is very nice and well maintained, including the bath house which was always clean.

The Flying U is not for everyone. It is not swank, it is not slick, and it is not scheduled down to the minute. What it is - it's like travelling back in time. It's like having your own horse. It's like having a family farm that you go to every summer for your whole life. It's rustic, real and heaps of fun.
