A medieval fortified village in Abruzzo region where its rooms, wine bar, restaurant, meeting room and reception lie scattered in separate buildings formerly used as barns, stables, pigsties, wine cellars and farmers' or shepherds' lodgings. Wood and stone cottages have been restyled as suites, the village dungeons serve as a wedding room and a former witch's lair now hosts business meetings. At Albergo Diffuso - literally 'scattered hotel' - in the mountains of Abruzzo, two hours east of Rome, a hamlet that had fallen into disrepair has been revived, extending to the local traditions of soap-making and wool-spinning, both now thriving once more.

I came for a few days, just before the Easter and left with a heavy heart. The room, the sorroundings, the staff and food were all excellent. I had to force myself to put down my phone and stop taking photos. I had a wonderful dinner at the restaurant belongin to the hotel, including pork with figues that was just perfectly balanced. I had a fireplace in the room, there were candles burning here and there and I wasn’t missing a thing. The bed was comfortable, bedsheets soft and the heated stone/wooden floor is a dream. I also suggest visiting Chiesamadre enoteca on the premises, for some delicious cuts of prisciutto and cheese and a glas of wine and a friendly talk with the owner.
I took a bread baking course and it was nicely challenging but also a lot of fun and delicious. We made among other things Ciambelline al vino, little bisquits made with sweet wine and dunked in the same wine while ready to eat… yum. The day before my departure the place started to fill up and another - very friendly and lively atmosphere - was unfolding. I will come back.

We stayed at Sexatntio for the first night of our honeymoon, and honestly, I could not fault it. The hotel is spread out over a village which is a conservation project and each part is being respectfully restored to its former glory. Our room was heaven; mattress and pillow and bedding all made with the local wool, an enormous bath with a jug to wash your hair with (because that is the traditional way!), and an open fire, all with amazing views over the countryside. We also ate at the restaurant, and had the most delicious 5 course tasting menu. I can’t recommend this place enough. We can’t wait to come back for our special anniversaries in the future to see how the restoration project continues. A slice of heaven.

The idea of a hotel ‘diffuso’ is genial! We stayed here for 2 nights in Aug 2021. The rooms are spread out in the village (worth a visit if not staying overnight) and makes you feel as if you have travelled back in time. Original features of the rooms are maintained and modern comforts added sympathetically. Don’t expect perfectly decorated rooms, it feels like the precious owners have just moved out.
The bathrooms are open plan to the room so it’s more suited for couples and singles or very good friends!
We ate at the hotel restaurant a 10 min walk from our rooms. Food excellent and the atmosphere was enchanting.
Our dog Frida even got a welcome pack with a dog bed, water bowl and a box of goodies! That the first time that has ever happens.
Overall a special place to spend a few relaxing days.

This "albergo diffuso" affords the opportunity to stay in a medieval stone village in the mountains of Abruzzo. As described, the rooms are small dwellings spread around the village. You may be staying next door or across from a local resident of the village. All of the bathroom fixtures are modern, but the rooms purposely have a rustic feel (uneven floors, bare walls, sparse furnishings). Each room is different.
The hotel has a restaurant in the village, and there are a few other restaurants and small shops as well.
I would suggest taking advantage of the local experiences (cooking or weaving classes). There are storefronts in the village that offer local hiking information.
The village is about 30 - 40 minutes from the larger city of L'Aquila.
The idea of bringing tourists to an albergo diffuso in small Italian village that would otherwise be like so many others, losing their young population, is commendable.

Staying at Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is like stepping back in time and having a truly authentic historical experience. I won't be able to accurately describe our entire experience but it was truly out of the norm in the best way possible! I will say that staying here won't be for everyone, but if you are looking to stay in a beautiful region of Italy close to national parks, enjoy the surrounding nature, explore the great outdoors, and have a remarkable stay in a unique property, then this is the place for you! We stayed in a 2-story suite named "the Bambini" which included a sitting room on the first floor and a master bedroom/bathroom on the second floor. The room was rustic but authentic and it is obvious that they maintain the integrity of the history of the village. The accommodations are modest but comfortable for your adventurous traveler. Dining in the village was wonderful and they kept true to form with breakfast spreads that were true to the early 20th century and we were in awe of every last detail throughout the village, the restaurant, the "canteen" and in our room. Lastly, the team at the front desk helped us arrange for a truffle hunting experience which I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. That is a must-do experience and one you will never forget!

I loved this hotel which has rooms spread out throughout the village. It’s a fantastic restoration project and staying there is like going back in time. Rooms are lit by candles (although there are some electric lights too,) beds are the old fashioned high type with a metal frame and hard mattress- but we actually found it very comfortable. Each room has a fireplace which you are welcome to light, although when we went it was too warm, but a lovely, cosy touch if you’re here during colder months. All very sustainable with not a piece of plastic in sight!! Rustic bar of beeswax soap and a wonderful oil-based shower gel / shampoo. Breakfast served in the restaurant, about 5 minutes walk from our room, was an amazing spread of local cured meats, cheese, fresh ricotta, honey, organic jams and wonderful sweet pastries. We had dinner there as well one night which was good too. Staff were all very welcoming, helpful and professional.
This hotel is not for everyone, but I loved the experience - it felt like a film set!!
I definitely want to try their other hotel in Matera.

The history behind the walls of those rooms can be felt from the moment you enter on your accommodation. It’s so simple yet so elegant, I wish the world had more hotels like Sextantio, the care to keep original features and yet give you the modern luxuries is amazing. I feel so lucky to have experienced both Sextantio (Matera and Abruzzo) and can’t decide which one is more special. Love the food as well and the staff is very precise at what they do. 🤍

This hotel is in an old Medieval town fron the 1500's. There is some restoration going on in the town, but it doesn't interfere with any plans. The room is an old wall house. It has stone walls, floors and fireplaces. I chose the room with a small terrace, and a living room. The bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. There is a large soaking tub, in the bathroom, but no shower. Be prepared to use the rinsing pot provided. It brings you back to the day. There is an excellent hair dryer. Not much in amenities, so bring your own, but hey it's the 1500's! The restaurant serves a great breakfast and dinner was outstanding. I loved the whole Medieval neighborhood. I chose a guide, but you can easily walk the town and discover it yourself, but the guide holds the key to the tower, which is the only way in and up to the top for the beautiful view.

I cannot say enough good things about the experience we had with Sextantio Albergo Diffuso arranging our wedding celebration last summer. From the ceremony at Rocca Calascio to the dinner at the Locanda, it was just a magical day. Our guests LOVED the hotel and continue to talk about returning. It's an incredibly unique and almost moving experience to know that your staying in buildings that are hundreds of years old. As far as the arrangements, Sextantio is an expert in all things wedding. We wouldn't have been able to have such a lovely day without them. Donatella, one of the event organizers, is wonder woman, seemingly in more than one place at once and taking care of things before you even have time to realize that they need to be taken care of. Roberta was also a big help! The whole staff, including the workers at the restaurant, were kind and helpful. If you're thinking about having your wedding here, don't hesitate! We simply cannot wait to go back one day.

Want to step back in time a live like a local of one century ago in a Medieval setting? This is the place. We've been there in January with my kids and we enjoyed every minute. The rooms restored in the most authentic way possible, the delicious local and traditional food, the activities connected with the soul and the roots of that land, the accommodating and very polite staff. Can't wait to go back in summer. Bravo!
