From the moment you step inside this ryokan, you will experience true Japanese hospitality. Staff/owners are extremely friendly. I was invited to a local organization called PEACE, to be dressed up in an kimono and play Japanese traditional instruments. The location is excellent. Close to Ueno park and in a very charming street. Lots of restaurants nearby. Nice rooms and...

This is a beautifully kept and very friendly Ryokan, close to the rail station, but nice a quiet. We took two bedrooms and our children loved staying here. The owner is a sweet fellow and when I asked him to sign his book one evening he told me: "Tomorrow morning I sign. Tonight I have been in neighbourhood with friends...

Read all the reviews and it is as they say it is. It is tucked in an old neighborhood with lots of Japanese culture around, so don't expect all your city-life amenities. That's why it's authentic. You get to greet neighbors while walking down the street early morning or late night while they go about their life. You see little...

Good quality for a low price near Tokyo. Standards of a classic Ryokan, close from the center by subway and English speaking staff. Common Japanese style bathroom but very big with view on a little Japanese garden

Pros: - Very comfortable rooms - Great heating - Good wifi - Lovely baths - Great neighbourhood Cons: - After checking out on the last day we took a really quick shower before heading to the airport. We asked if we could do this and the member of staff said it was okay. Then as we left the bath another...

Stay at Sawanoya for 3 nights. The room for single stay is on 3rd floor. It has yukata and towel provided inside the room. We can wear it after onsen bath. The japanese style bed is so comfortable. There're 2 onsen baths on the 1st floor. Both rooms are nice with garden view. The bath opens till 1:00 a.m. It...

A traditional Japanese bath house with all the amenities that comes with it. For a small fee you can access this bath house using its locker and showers. Be aware not all bath house allow foreigners in. Make sure you know/respect the rules when utilising this bath house in order to blend in with the Japanese locals.

When you stay at Ryokan Sawanoya you will get friendly and personal service absent from most stays in Japan; you will get help with tour and dining recommendations, a personal map, help with luggage, and in my case the arranging of the delivery of a book I left behind which was forwarded to my hotel in Kyoto. The room rates...

I first stayed at Sawanoya over 20 years ago. It is amazing how little has changed. The family are lovely and the service is very gentle and kind. Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
