The Cave houses El Mirador de Galera offers you 8 Cave Houses restored in the traditional style and with all the modern comfort and facilities. They are provided with fireplace, barbecue, oven, electric cooking stove, coffee maker, orange-squeezer, toaster, full kitchenware, washing machine, TV, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, clothes horse, bed linen, towels, board games... All our Cave Houses are in Galera with the exception of El Trillo cave and La Piedra cave which are located in Orce. Both the caves in Galera and Orce are located in the town centre. The cave houses are bioclimatic houses that keep a constant temperature of approximately 19o C troughout the year. Because of its special characteristics, cave houses become a diferent type of accomodation both as a novelty and as an attraction and are a unique alternative to farm houses which will make the visitors be completely satisfied. Inside the cave houses you can be isolated from both high temperatures and humidity and also from electromagnetic radiations. If you want to "sleep like a baby", the cave houses are the best option. They are situated in Galera and Orce, set in the High Plateau (Altiplano) among the Natural Parks of Baza, Castril, Maria and La Sagra, where you can enjoy an extraordinay scenery of great beauty. There are plentiful remains of ancient civilizations (Agaric archaeological museum of Galera and Orce), a rich cooking with a special dish of this area, the Segureno Lamb, a local breed grown here known for its quality and taste. We should also remark the outstanding sunsets over the dramatic surrounding countryside for those who Love astrology.

we showed up at 12 and there was no one there, we called a number and a sleepy voice acted surprised we were there, told us to come back at 4 for check-in. When we did they were very unfriendly + coughing like they were deathly sick. We were showed to our "cave" which was above the owners house. We paid 10 euro extra for wood, but they were all large green logs w/ no kindling or fire starter, so impossible to get going without burning reports we had with us. We didn't discover we had hot water until the next day, you had to push a button hidden under a cabinet which he never showed us. The owner + his family kept slamming doors + talking loudly the whole night, non-stop. It was very loud + cold.

We were on a trip with family and friends to explore the local area. Galera is a lovely small town and very well kept with the addition of so many cave houses on the hills surrounding the town. There is a lovely outdoor natural pool 10 minutes drive just past the turning for Huescar called Fuencaliente. We were 3 adults and 6 young teens and we stayed in El Troje cave house with 4 bedrooms sleeping 7 and a double sofa bed, there was plenty of space for us all and the kitchen was well equipped. Only half of the downstairs (incl 1 twin bedroom & 1 bathroom) is actual cave. The décor is a mixture of rustic and modern and our house was well presented. This is good accommodation for a couple of nights. It's a 10 minute walk down to the town and about a 20 minute walk back up the hill, there’s enough bars and restaurants in the town. We could only find 1 small Coviran supermarket in the town and was well stocked for our needs. Access is good by car but there are 2 tricky bits to manoeuvre, 1 just before parking outside the houses and another to leave, we found it easier to drive around the whole hill to exit.

There is something very appealing about spending the night in an Andulician cave, and certainly the experience did not disappoint. The 5 minute walk along the track bordered by abandoned caves with our host (you are sent you to an address in the village and get to follow him on his scooter) did leave me a little worried about where we might end up spending the night, but the cave itself is well presented, spotlessly clean and has all the mod cons. Inside is charming - a mix of IKEA chic and Arab baazar (which doesn't sound great, but actually worked well). The view from terrace is superb and there is even a bbq kitchen and outdoor furniture, and if you don't fancy cooking there are numerous places in the village just at the bottom of the hill (10 to 15 minutes walk). Staying in a cave is a very particular experience though and I have to confess my husband didn't like it. First the access isn't great, esp when carrying suitcases/ shopping. Second, caves are cold. 35C in the heat of the day made the constant 18C in the cave feel pretty cold, and we ended up lighting a fire both nights we stayed - which was, I have to admit, pretty weird. The draw on the chimney isn't great and it did feel a bit smoky, though it didn't bother me. Rooms at the front of the cave all have windows with wooden shutters, but our second bedroom was an internal room, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. Over all I think it's a great think to do for a night or two, but I would probably try a cave to see how you like it before committing to a week or more.

These converted "cave houses" are well worth considering if you are looking for self-catering accommodation. These are newly renovated, tastefully fitted-out and decorated. Ours was quite a bit bigger than we had expected. Despite our overall positive experience of our stay here, there are a couple of issues. For some reason despite having a modern washing machine, fridge etc, little things, such as an Italian (stove) coffee maker had no handle. The most important advice we can give you is that you must find the owners shop/house in the centre of town (2/3 Calle Cervantes) and not try to find the actual rented accommodation. This was not made clear on the website nor the emails that we received confirming our booking. Also, despite the the tri-lingual web site, none of the family appears to speak another language (other than a little bit of French). So, ensure you have your phrase book!
