Northern Edge Algonquin co-creates and hosts all-inclusive transformational retreats for groups of 8 to 30. We invite you to unplug in nature for our bespoke, multi-day experiences that reconnect and inspire the leader within, nourishing deep connections in our communities. Our guests sleep comfortably in private or semi-private cozy ecoluxe cabins designed in harmony with our forest home, enjoy nourishing meals crafted with care from locally-sourced ingredients, and participate in specially curated experiences hosted by local guides, facilitators, and storytellers which make use of our lakeside studio and natural gathering spaces. Groups and individuals experience a variety of experiences led by special guests, guided nature excursions (exploring by stand-up paddleboard, canoe, cross-country ski, snowshoe, bike, or hike); yoga classes, sound meditations, art experiences, and more. We might align with the pace of nature and rise with the sun to paddle a misty river in search of moose and other wildlife, or unwind in our wood-fired sauna before jumping in the lake or rolling in the snow. At night, share stories and music in the warmth of a fire circle under a festival of stars. Guests leave the Edge feeling renewed and transformed, ready to live their extraordinary life.
I left the Edge today from a weekend yoga retreat and it was hard to leave! The property is beautiful and well-maintained - it would be especially amazing to visit in the earlier fall with all the coloured leaves. Every space we were in was so clean, you can tell the staff work hard. I stayed in Dreamer’s Hill and it was a really nice space. I was happy to have my own ensuite bathroom but may try a cabin next time for a different experience. The bed was really comfortable and the bedding was so soft I need to buy some for myself. There was a tea station which was nice to use in the evening. Point’s North always had hot water, a few snacks and tea/coffee available outside of meal times. The food was amazing. There was more than enough available at every meal time and they use all local meats and produce. I think I will be full for the whole week from how much I ate! It’s a nice place to go and disconnect for a few days and meet new people with similar intentions. I would visit again!…

I ended up leaving Northern Edge less than 24 hours into my 3-day retreat. Remuneration was absolutely refused by Todd, the owner. This was absolutely not the experience I felt I paid for. Here are just a few of the problems I had: 1. The most expensive rooms at the Retreat are not private cabins. Though the website says, “Our guests sleep comfortably in private or semi-private cozy ecoluxe cabins”, this is not the case for Dreamer’s Hill. It’s a single cabin that houses 10 guests in 5 rooms. When we booked our stay there for $2200 for two of us for 2 nights, we never dreamed it wouldn’t be our own cabin. 2. Dreamer’s Hill doesn’t have a coffee station as stated on the website. The owner states that coffee makers use too much solar energy. 3. You’re not allowed to bring food into any of the cabins. 4. You’re not allowed to bring any alcohol. 5. You’re only allowed to enter the main building with your retreat group for meals and yoga. This is apparently the personal home of the owners. 6. We had 19 people in our group. 19 people did not fit comfortably in the North Point building or in the yoga studio. 7. The retreat center discourages the use of a schedule, so we were not given an itinerary. 8. You’re not allowed to use any electronic appliances in the cabins including hair dryers, curling irons. 9. We were encouraged to go ‘au natural’, meaning no makeup, to consider no deodorant, no hair styling needed. 10. There are no hydration stations anywhere. There’s a tap (well water) in the North Point building, but you’ll want to use your own water bottle since the glasses there are hand-washed and reused by guests without being sanitized in a dishwasher. 11. No coffee or tea until after 7 am. Again, I’d suggest bringing your own coffee mug. When coffee was poured, soap bubbled up from the cups. 12. When we asked where we could go to be alone, we were told our room/bed was the best spot. All other places are communal, & all activities are communal. 13. You are expected and encouraged to “bus” your tables after you eat; clean the food scraps and pre-rinse the dishes. The woman who ate breakfast beside me had spent the night with diarrhea (in her cabin with a compostable toilet), so from a health and safety perspective I didn’t feel comfortable clearing her plate & utensils. 14. You are expected to bring your own towels for showering and sauna. 15. The sauna is not fired all the time. It takes 2 hours to heat up, and was planned to be heated once while I was there, for 19 of us to access in the late afternoon. If you love the idea of being in close quarters with strangers, having no private space you’d typically expect with a retreat, and following a long list of rules designed to minimize the use of solar energy then this place is for you. If you’re used to traditional style retreats with luxuries like towels and coffee, you are likely in the wrong place.…

Hi Laura & Skye, Thank you for taking the time to express your disappointment in your visit. As a TripAdvisor Greenleader at the Platinum Level operating on solar power, there are many ways that a stay at the Edge is different from a hotel or resort. We inform guests of these important differences prior to their visit. Most of our visitors appreciate the opportunity to follow environmentally friendly practices as part of their stay. As a transformational leadership centre, most events here are alcohol-free and guests are coming here for personal growth, connection and restoring a sense of wellness. We encourage open discussion and welcome fair reviews of our programs, facilities, and guests' experiences to provide an accurate portrayal of the services we offer. Twice, we invited a phone conversation to discuss your concerns and determine a fair resolution. As you weren’t open to this phone conversation, here are our responses to the issues you’ve raised: 1. Our website states: "Designed for the most comfort, the spacious and colourful rooms in Dreamers’ Hill are some of the most upscale rooms available (and our first accommodations featuring private showers). Amethyst, Labradorite, and Citrine rooms come equipped with a 3pc private en-suite bathroom with showers, while Jade and Sodalite share a fourth bathroom & shower. Each room has a special queen bed that can convert into two twin beds, giving us lots of flexibility with sleeping arrangements.” The registration form states "You've selected one of 5 Bedrooms in Dreamer's Hill". 2. Our guests appreciate that staff are available for over 14 hours every day who ensure fresh hand-poured organic, fair trade locally produced coffee is available to guests. While it’s typically served at 7am and at breakfast, it is available upon request until the meal service team departs at 9pm. Also upon request, early morning risers can be shown how to make pour-over coffee. 3. All-inclusive meals and snacks are served throughout each retreat and there is a refrigerator in Points North for storing personal food items. 4. As clearly stated on our website and in our FAQ, "Experiences at the Edge invite us to connect through all of the senses. Alcohol and drugs inhibit the depth of connection possible and can be a distraction from the personal transformation that our guests are seeking. We also respect that some participants who join us at the Edge may have had previous harmful relationships with alcohol or drugs, and we are creating safe space to engage together. Guests are not permitted to bring their own alcohol onto the property for personal consumption, and the majority of our retreats are alcohol-free." 5. There are many different spaces at the Edge used for a variety of purposes --- as many who have visited the Edge know, our family does live on-site above the main dining room, which like many hotels and resorts is open during mealtime only. There is a special studio space in this building as well which is only used by some larger groups, and we had the great pleasure of making this studio available during your visit. We're well accustomed to living amongst retreat guests and we do our best to make folks feel welcome. 6. Thank you for letting us know you felt the spaces were too small for this group of 17 plus 2 facilitators. Indeed, the fact that is rained all weekend did make indoor space seem more cramped than usual -- in general, we have ways of setting up spaces so that they feel just right for groups of up to 25. Since Covid, many of us are sensitive to the need for more space, and we are very pleased to be building a new large-group movement studio to meet this need. 7. We encourage facilitators to plan flexible programming that can "go with the flow," responding to guest needs and special opportunities as they arise to create one-of-a-kind experiences. We find that in most cases, providing an itinerary in advance can set expectations which makes it hard to bring elements of surprise, flexibility and the opportunity to respond to emerging guest desires. 8. Any devices that produce heat from electricity will damage the long-term health of our solar-charged batteries that we rely on to run the facility. Using such appliances can cause power to shut down all across the facility. Although phones cannot access cell signals or wifi, recharging phones is available in every guest room. 9. We do not make any requests of our guests regarding make-up and deodorant. Like many public spaces and events, we do encourage consciousness toward those with scent sensitivities. As described above, hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners are incompatible with our electrical system. 10 & 11. There are taps available at every building serving fresh, chemical-free deep well water that is tested regularly and treated with UV light. Due to the quality of city tap water, you may be accustomed to water coming out of a water cooler or store-bought water bottle. Here, the tap water coming out of our well is clean, pure, and delicious. We encourage bringing a re-usable bottle, and we also have glassware available. In the spirit of community, our guests pitch in to help tidy up after themselves. Drinking ware is regularly sanitized as part of our cleaning process. 12. Most guests appreciate connecting with other visitors at shared retreat sessions. Private social spaces for for quiet alone time guests to use during retreats include the lakefront gazebo, Highlander House log cabin, Sunshine cabin, and the upstairs studio space in Points North. In addition, guests sometimes request an outdoor fire hangout or spend time in sit spots in the Hemlock Grove or on the Hive Deck. Our facilitators are quite happy to provide quiet, comfortable spaces for guests to enjoy introspective personal time. 13. In the spirit of community we invite guests to assist with clearing and washing personal dishes. Remember those days before automatic dishwashers when the best conversations happened at the kitchen sink? It’s that way here all the time. Once this is complete, the dishes are run through our dishwasher for a round of sanitization. Often guests will take turns busing dishes from their table -- Helping clear the dishes is optional. 14. We include towels on the guest packing list. We do, however, have an abundance of towels for use in showering, the sauna, and swimming for guests who have forgotten to pack this. You have only to ask. :) 15. Our large wood-fired sauna takes 1-2 hours to fire up. It’s a wonderful amenity that is provided at intentional times to enhance the retreat program, these times are decided by facilitators, often with input from attendees. We appreciate your concerns and will continue to work with our program partners to ensure our programs and experiences help guests feel safe, connected and transformed through their visits. The Edge is quite unlike resorts that cater to indulgent vacations -- this is a retreat we have intentionally set up for transformational shared group experiences, and we do what we can to convey this accurately. We hope your review will help others to understand this clearly - thank you! We remain available for a phone conversation at your request.

I’ve never experienced a place so special: Magic skies, water and earth surround this oasis; A place that is supported by nature and the stewardship of the Lucier family. Northern Algonquin is a place to reflect, grow and be nourished. I attended a Heart Wood Retreat and felt very privileged to have the opportunity to experience the openness and receptivity of each member. The meals were amazing, made with care and generosity. The cabins are clean and close to the main gathering spot. The forest is animated and speaks of the wonderful work that happens here. I hope to have another opportunity to return.

It was a perfect weekend! We met great people, had awesome activities in the beautiful winter forest and lake, campfires and lots of stories. The meals by Chef Gregor were beyond what was expected. The food is some of the best ever eaten. The leaders/family go above and beyond to make sure you are happy. I felt like I was visiting long lost cousin. You need to go there!

Second time at Northern Edge and definitely not the last! First was a few years ago as part of a team building weekend getaway. It was such a great experience that I knew one day I'd return - and I'm so happy I did. This second time it was as a guest over the August long weekend at one of the retreats. The location is amazing, serene, calm, eco friendly with tons to do. Want to paddle board (stand or sit!), canoe, bike, hike? All of those are options, among other activities. Food was in-credible! Every meal was a thoughtfully planned experience pulled together using ingredients sourced from local farmers, Chef Gregor's garden or right from the Edge property. All of our hosts - Tim, Lindsay and Arlene - were attentive and friendly. Facilities were super clean and comfy. There were many great moments over the weekend - sipping morning coffee on the patio while staring at the lake and beautiful garden buzzing with honey bees and hummingbirds, roasting s'mores around the campfire, gliding along the water on a paddle board or hearing the loons and waves crashing along the shore during a restorative yoga session. Northern Edge is a truly special place, one that I will continue to return to. Thanks to everyone at Northern Edge for a wonderful escape in gorgeous Algonquin!…

Welcome back! It is always special when guests return after many years to experience the transformations that we have undergone. Our Executive Retreats are one way of experiencing this place, along with yoga retreats and custom group programs, but from time to time we offer programs like Quest for Balance for individuals and friends to share with us. Thank you for coming back to share your long weekend with us! Best regards, Todd

I attended the Quest for Balance retreat in Aug 2019 along with two good friends and approximately ten other participants, with age ranges between early-20s and late-50s. My friends and I stayed in a well-built, clean cabin with three beds and a bathroom with a composting toilet and sink with potable water. The facilities were amazing, and the family has obviously built up the retreat amenities at significant expense over the years. The main building where we ate meals and did indoor yoga, the “Points North” building where the showers, common area, and “café” were located, and sauna were lovely. Outdoors was even better. A gorgeous lake with soft, sandy bottom, beautiful dock, plenty of Muskoka chairs, comfortable outdoor furniture, and sports equipment including stand-up paddle (SUP) boards, canoes, and kayaks. However, my friends and I were disappointed to discover that this was a dry weekend. The website indicated that local beer and wine would be served at meal times. The food prepared by chef Gregor was incredible, and we were expecting wine and beer to be paired to compliment his dishes. But unfortunately this was not the case. A limited amount of very inexpensive wine was served with one meal only, and only for one hour. It was very odd, and the staff seemed extremely uncomfortable discussing and serving alcohol. In my opinion, to better manage expectations, the owners should consider advertising this retreat as completely alcohol-free. We also ran into issues with regards to hot beverages. Carafes of coffee and hot water were provided in Points North at approximately 7:30 am each morning. A kettle and cups, coffee, filters, tea bags, etc. was also present in the common area, however there was a sign indicating “staff only” were to use this kettle. When asked for hot beverages outside of the early morning, staff would state that afternoon was too hot, evening was too late, etc. Also, guests were scolded for bringing ceramic mugs outside, or for not immediately washing their own cups, spoons, etc. I was scolded like a child in front of other guests for using the kettle early one morning. When I attempted to discuss the issue to determine if it was a safety or electricity concern, the facilitator stated “the [--] family is very strict about these things” and stormed out of Points North. Guests were also scolded for borrowing towels for the sauna (“the [--] family does not appreciate people using their towels”), for attempting to borrow water glasses from the main house (“the [--] family insists that glassware stay in the main house and not be used outside or in cabins”), etc. It became a running gag for the weekend to see who had gotten in trouble that day from “teacher”. It was embarrassing for grown women to be treated in this manner. As these incidents increased, I retreated. Retreated away from group meditation and yoga, away from common areas. I did my best to enjoy the company of my friends and the other guests, and appreciate the nature around me, but I was happy to leave and return to the relaxation and ease of my home in Toronto. I have a few recommendations in these areas. Firstly, I would ask that the owners remove things from common areas that bring them anxiety. If you are worried about a broken mug, or towels being used, it would be best to leave those items in areas in accessible to your guests. Also, retreat facilitators should use respectful, mature language with guests. Issues are best dealt with as they arise. Attempts to discuss any of the issues listed above during the weekend were met with silence, or limited responses with no resolution. On the last day, I spoke with the owner about a few of my concerns and, while he acknowledged that we had been “policed” during our stay, and that was not his intention, in other areas he simply said “well, we do things a little differently around here”. I sincerely hope that the owners do some soul-searching, and take time to reflect on what hospitality means and what kind of experience they want people to have on their property.…

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me on the final morning of your experience at the end of Quest for Balance and for sharing your story about your disappointments. Indeed we do quite a bit of soul searching as a regular practice in ensuring our programs, promotions and facilitation of guest experiences is what we and our guests dream it to be. We also provide guests with an in-room guide book that explains how and why things are different here. I invite you to read ‘The story of the Edge’ on our website or in our guide book to gain a fuller appreciation for the magic we create here. Indeed, prior to and upon guest arrival we invite guests to help shape our programs based on your desires. As I mentioned to you, our guest orientation on arrival day is a big part of understanding how we co-create meaningful, memorable experiences with our guests. When we spoke we agreed that your late arrival and failure to understand the reasons behind some of our procedures created problems for you. As you indicated hot water, and complimentary tea and coffee are available to guests all day, every day and that there is no need for guests to operate burners we use to provide this service. As I explained to you the gas burner that was in use in the cafe was dangerous to operate because it does not have a proper safety switch. Our gas service technician advised us to not allow guests to operate it - our host facilitators did the same. (The burner is scheduled to be replaced.) That you repeatedly chose to turn this burner on despite this instruction from our host staff caused considerable undo stress. Guests are invited to use any and all mugs for personal use during their stay. We do ask guests to clean and return mugs after use and to not leave them unattended. Like most retreats or outdoor restaurants we prefer glassware remains indoors for the safety of all. Broken glass and bare feet do not mix. As part of our sharing and caring culture, we invite guests to share with cleanup after meal time. While we take great care in providing delicious group meals with special considerations (such as providing you with gluten-free options at every meal) we live on solar power. We do not have commercial dishwashers. Many guests remark that this intimate sharing and caring for others and chatting with others over a basin of warm suds hearkens back to a time when everyone gathered in the kitchen at grandma’s house. It is a warm and vital part of our culture. You will have read our policy on alcohol (which you agreed to as apart of the registration process) and come to understand how we serve complimentary/free locally crafted ales and wine from Viewpointe Estates Winery as a celebratory accent to many of our programs like Quest for Balance. You will have noted that our solar powered facility is dark at night and trails can be uneven. We also occasionally present guest experiences at all times of the day and some of those experiences are unsafe if guests are not fully present or their senses are compromised. Complimentary alcohol is served at times and places it is safe to do so and doesn’t interfere with delivering our transformational retreats. Our wood-fired sauna is unlike any most guests have ever experienced providing seating for up to twenty around a central Finnish sauna stove. We provide extra towels for guests who need them, but we provide a packing list that invites our guests to bring a personal towel from home. Because we live on solar-power we do not have commercial laundry service on site so we appreciate guests reusing towels or using their own from home. Our host facilitators do their best to help guests have a special stay while minimizing their impact on energy resources. You found yourself retreating. Indeed, you created quite a wonderful painting of the lakefront as part of your experience. I hope the blue water, trees, but especially the little duck bums bring you much joy as it hangs in your bathroom over the coming years. Once again, thank your for taking the time to write, providing me an opportunity to explain why things are different here. The best is yet to come.

Northern Edge Algonquin is a beautiful and powerful Eco-resort which provides wilderness opportunities for creation, adventure, and rejuvenation. It is a truly special place where dreaming is encouraged and everything is possible. Your group may dream of painting from a canoe, sleeping on the dock under the stars, walking a labyrinth of candles, or making music in a sauna... Overall the past several years I have felt the pull to the Edge over and over for various roles and experiences. Each time my heart and eyes are opened wider and I see the world with more understanding and beauty. The Edge has shown me how to support a deeper level of connection and unity within groups and to listen deeply for the threads being woven and the ways in which we might invite them forward during an experience. I enjoy working with the Edge team in planning and unifying the pieces we all contribute to the overall experience. The team is supportive to work with as you move through regular discussions on guest dreams, creating a schedule which supports the unique elements of an Edge experience, and holding check-ins throughout the retreat for real time review of the experience, ensuring you may adjust and align as needed. Leaders, here's how you'll know the Edge is calling you.. - you're seeking to explore and move through your points of growth - you're craving deep nourishing breaths to support play and rest - your mouth is watering for a delicious culinary experience - you're called to bring people together in community - you're looking to learn new ways of leadership and of being - you're ready to ignite transformation - you believe in living in harmony with the earth - you wonder what it would like to be supported by the elements of nature - you dream of co-creating an experience where everyone's gifts and contributions are welcome…
