The Algonquin Cottage Outpost is booked as a whole in the summer season - ideal for large family vacations. Book accommodation only and do your own thing or add on guided excursions and/or meals. The Algonquin Island Retreat offers the perfect couples-only adventure vacation. A short paddle from the mainland, the island offers stunning views, the perfect setting for romance. Custom adventures are designed for special events at all properties.
Our three-day company (16 people) offsite was fantastic. We were in the main cabin and the outer cabin, both accommodations were cozy and comfortable. The food was plentiful and delicious, and they are more than willing to accommodate special dietary needs. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and very flexible to our schedule and wishes. This was a wonderful experience, and I would recommend it for company gatherings where the group is willing and able to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful Algonquin surroundings.

Our 3 generation family of 16 spent 4 blissful winter days off the grid at the log cabin between Christmas and New Years.
The staff- Beris, Pablo, Kiera and Paul- were engaging, accommodating, fun and made our experience there top notch. Outdoor activities included Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, skating, “winter games,” nighttime broom ball, sled luging, and, not for the faint of heart, polar plunging! All is this was planned and organized by the excellent crew of staff.
The cabin is cozy and rustic and the meals were exactly the type of nourishing comfort food you like to have after a day outdoors.
Thank you Voyageur Quest!

Our 3 generation family of 16 stayed at Voyager Quest cabin for 4 amazing days after Christmas. It was a magical holiday, off the grid retreat filled with lots of winter fun, cozy accommodations, fantastic service and great staff/guides!
Barris was a great guide and led our family with various activities ensuring our safety, our fun and educating us along the way. Kiera was a rock star with 8 kids ages 4-12 and quickly earned the title of camp counselor and coach as she made every activity with the kids fun and exciting. Pablo was a super friendly guide who also ensured our family had fun and was entertained. And Paul was great in the kitchen preparing all our meals and offering a diverse menu of food during our stay.
We couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend quality time with family in the beautiful Canadian wilderness. It was an experience we won’t forget and has left us with memories for a lifetime! Thank you team Voyager Quest!

We did a Winter adventure trip with friends organized by Voyageur Quest. It was perfectly organized and we had amazing guides. The activities, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, dog sledding, polar bear dip, were excellent. The cabin was quite luxurious and the guides prepared delicious food. We had an amazing time, also for our teenage kids. The head guide Mauricio was outstanding, well informed about nature background facts.

That was one of the best weekends we have had in the past few years. The team was unbelievably helpful. Mauricio, Andrew, Mason, Baris, and Emily made these few days so memorable. The food was amazing even for the vegetarian guys. They knew how to navigate between the different people in the group and how to get the kids engaged. Do not give up the polar bear dip!! it is the best

We did a fair amount of research - mind you all at the last minute - to arrange a remote Algonquin Park mini-vacation to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have a cottage on Lake Muskoka, so it was important to find something that felt truly natural and calming.
The trip was a three day two night trip and day one started at 3pm. We had a pretty decent idea what we needed (which is not much as the tripper provides all food, sleeping bags and tents - essentially everything) and Algonquin Cottage Outpost (Voyageur Quest) had prepared an abundance of excellent food and materials to keep us in good form.
We arrived and shortly head off by canoe from their base camp on a lake. 30 minutes later we were at our first site. We had hardly moved - as we could still see where we left and were just around the corner from the Island retreat they rent. This totally threw us as we were still on a busy lake with boats buzzing around. We really did not understand it. We had a swim and a campfire dinner with two jet skis constantly whizzing by the island. This might as well have been our own cottage. We asked why we were here for one of the two nights and our guide said that it took too long to get into the park so we would do it the next day. All I could think of is why didn't it start at 10am then? For half our trip we were in a regular busy lake and while it does say Algonquin Lake in the material (technically correct) we felt a little that it had not been properly disclosed.
Our guide was young and clearly well trained. He started fires almost instantly and had a wonderful calmness and politeness that made it very comfortable for us as a team. A good cook, a thoughtful person. However, you cannot beat experience. After we arrived at our campsite on day two for the second night, we had experienced pretty decent rain for much of the day. We had rolled our sleeping bags and put them in their respective sleeves and in the backpacks we carried but had not put them further into tied plastic garbage bags. They were quite wet and it was approaching sleep time. This could have been a disaster. Fortunately we had some late sun and my wife set up lines and we hung them for an hour and it worked out okay. But I think the guide ought to have checked to make sure that key things like our sleeping bags were appropriately bundled, especially given we had said we had not been canoeing for years. Also on the last day, my wife got a burning scar on her foot and the guide said it was probably "hogweed" and it could get bad. And then we got in our canoes and left shore. It was in fact hogweed - and it is very painful and a soap or disinfectant washing at the time would have made a huge difference according to what we have read since. Her foot is still healing. Now no guide could have prevented my wife from walking on this - but if the guide recognized it, it would seem like he might have had a treatment plan as well. Or not. But look it up... it isn't nice.
Our second night WAS the reason we did the trip. Gorgeous water and other than a solitary motorized fishing boat breaking the rules and buzzing past us, it was unbelievably beautiful. A lot of paddling, some very modest but enjoyable portages (it has been sometime since I carried a canoe and it felt awesome actually). Our guide built a makeshift sauna and we loved being inside the park. There were few animals (we saw far more on the drive through Hunstville home!) and our guide did not tell us anything about the park, or wildlife or fauna at all. That was strange - but we were fine with the calm tranquility that the park brought. There were no hikes or cool spots to check out - just a fine canoe trip.
We paddled back to the main lake by entrance #1 and then a long canoe through the wind to the base camp. At base camp there was little fanfare.... our guide went into the shop while we unpacked and we saw a number of staff there but nobody came out and asked how our trip was or if we needed a hand or anything. We tipped our guide generously and left.
The trip was just over $2,000 with tax (and before $150 tip) and I would not select this outfit again. Two nights - when one was on a regular lake - it just didn't make sense. It is not that the guide and food was overpriced, it was that the entire experience was not quite as advertised. I am sure there are other outfitters to experience and I would suggest that you look around carefully.
I had initially thought of just leaving it alone, but they really have encouraged us to write a review... so here it is! I have been doing a lot of trekking and travelling. From the far north of Laos (and south!) to crazy highlands on Borneo. My expectations are measured against what I have been told I ought to find and in this respect I give Voyageur Quest low marks because I don't think it lived up to the billing. But they seemed nice enough certainly.

Response from VoyageurQuest, Manager at Algonquin Log Cabin and Cottage Outpost
Responded Oct 23, 2012
As this customer mentions - It is important to note that this couple booked a private guided canoe trip for 2 people at the very last minute (confirmed 48 hours before the start date) during peak season. Typically, our guided trips depart at 12:30pm. The arrangement for a 3pm start is unusual and was informed by the last minute booking - a time that could work for both the customer and our operation. Unfortunatly, the couple showed up late. The weather was changing and our guide did not want to risk paddling in the dark or be stuck on the river with changing weather. Our canoe and dogsled adventures leave at scheduled times. If customers arrive late, they may miss their trip entirely and or force our guide to change the itinerary. The $2000 cited in the review requires clarification. Our Algonquin Park 3 day guided canoe trip is $395 per person and includes two nights camping accommodation, meals from lunch day 1 to lunch day 3, park permits, all equipment and services of a wilderness guide. Our scheduled trips take an average of 6 people on every adventure. Trips start at 12pm and leave every Monday and Friday from June to September. This customer booked a private adventure which can be much more expensive depending on how many people are in the private group, what is included (transportation, float planes, fishing guides, private chef, add on accommodation etc) and the date requested. Most private trips average 4 to 5 people, cost in the neighbourhood of $400 - $500 per person and are booked 45 – 90 days before the departure date. Most Voyageur Quest private canoe trips start at sunrise or early morning. We always value our customers feedback and hope that our reply offers context.

We stayed at the log cabin in August. There were many positive aspects to our trip, and unfortunately, a few negatives, which took a bit of the shine off our experience. We are an outdoorsy family, so we certainly enjoyed the rustic feeling of the lodge. The food was fantastic and the staff were great (quite knowledgeable and friendly)! We enjoyed the canoeing very much. We also loved relaxing on the brand new dock. However, we found the hiking to be very strenuous. In fact, the hike to the cabin took 3 hours through rough terrain. If we had known this, we would have come more prepared; i.e. better hiking shoes and clothing, etc. Though the Log Cabin claims to be located within Algonquin Park, it is NOT. It is located outside the park, and unfortunately, this was a bit of a problem for us. There are other cottages on the lake; in fact, the cottage directly next door to the Log Cabin was full of rowdy teenagers who partied the entire weekend we were there. This was extremely disappointing, as we had planned on a weekend of solitude on an uninhabited lake. The music/yelling next door continued into the night both days, and woke us up multiple times. We couldn't even get near the "Jumping Rock" on either day since it was so full of people. Despite the negatives, we still had a great experience. We would definitely recommend this trip to others, since we had a very nice time. Just be prepared for a lot of physical activity and the likliness of rowdy/loud neighbours.

Response from VoyageurQuest, Owner at Algonquin Log Cabin and Cottage Outpost
Responded Sep 19, 2011
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay with us at the Algonquin Log Cabin. It was our pleasure to host your family and we are glad that you enjoyed the lodge, meals and our wilderness guides. The Algonquin Log Cabin is located on Surprise Lake, 8km from Algonquin Access Point #1 and 30 minutes from any major roads. The only way into Algonquin Park from our location is by foot or canoe. We share the flora, fauna and wildlife of the interior of the Park, which we showcase through our guided excursions including hiking, canoeing and wildlife interpretation. We recommend that participants are able to be active at a walking pace for up to 4 hours at a time as our hikes cover different types of terrain including inclines and level areas. The Algonquin Log Cabin does share Surprise Lake with a small number of cottages. We agree that it was most unfortunate that the actions of our neighbours affected your stay, and would like to note that this is not a common occurrence at the Algonquin Log Cabin.

The three-day, two-night canoe trip was amazing! Our family of four was matched with another family (with similar age children) of five for a wonderful canoe and camping trip with Cole, our Voyageur Quest guide. After learning to canoe and portage, which was hard (but satisfying) work, we paddled out to Tea Lake to set up camp. Cole was wonderful with the kids and adults alike, and tailored the trip to our needs. We had plenty of time to paddle, relax, swim and really enjoy everything about Algonquin.
On our morning sunrise paddle, we saw a bull moose, and there were loons calling all around each day, which was magical.
The menu is set, and everything was cooked/prepared by Cole. Everyone could work as much or as little as they wanted. Picky eaters might have an issue. By the end, the kids were building the campfires and the older ones were portaging their canoes and lifting heavy packs without complaint!
I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who wants to experience a canoe trip in Algonquin. I would say that being matched with a similar group (they were lovely) made the trip even more enjoyable.
