First the good. The staff all seemed very nice and helpful. We were welcomed with opened arms when we got there. The property and views were amazing...its the type of place you want to walk around for hours just looking at the plants and/or just sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee. The not so good. The drive there is...

Stayed two nights, and had a blast. The accomodations are very simple, and most rooms have shared baths. But if you want a great bang for your buck, a community atmosphere where guests and staff hang out, great vegetarian meals, and a litle distance from all the touristy places, this is the place! We stayed at a couple of high-end...

Loved it. The view of Arenal is amazing. Loved sitting with tea in the morning taking in the view of the volcano, lake and surrounding scenery. The bushes with purple flowers were full of hummingbirds. Kelly and the rest of the staff were very friendly and helpful with advice. We participated in the group dinner one night and made pasta,...

My husband and I stayed there for two nights and didn't want to leave. They were all super friendly and Kelly gave us great advice for exploring the area. The best part was the food. You get home from a day of hikes and hot springs to have a themed dinner. The chef has the guests make part of the...

We had a great 3-day stay at Essence. The top 3 features are: great location to view Arenal (from the swimming pool...), delicious dinners in a friendly atmosphere, very helpful staff for organising outings. However beware: do not choose the tiny bedroom (unless there's no other option), the best quality/price is probably the tent (you wake up with view on...

We stayed at Kelly's place at the end of June, searching for a different kind of family vacation with teenagers. We were two families of 9 people, but Kelly managed to find place for us at very short notice. The rooms were basic, also the bathroom, but the environment and the view amazing, we liked the breakfast very much. If...

We spent two nights at the Essence Arenal, stopping over on our way from San José to Monteverde. Though it's a little bumpy to drive the last eight or so kilometers on a tough rough-road you'll be rewarded with a a wonderful location, extremely friendly staff (and owners Kelly and Nico) and gorgeous cooking, which partly - for dinners -...

We stayed 4 nights in July and enjoyed it very much. We had a private room with private bath which had lovely views of the volcano from the sitting area in front. The only downside was that the room was right next to the kitchen/dining area, which meant we could hear fairly loud music and kitchen noise until 10pm. Not...

We spent two nights in a room for 4 people and ate at the hotel. You just have to like Nicko, Kelly and their staff; they just love what they are doing and it rubs off on everyone else. The views are stupendous, the food is great. We took a horse ride up the hill, which was brilliant and went...

This place is perfect. It doesn't feel overly touristy and is off the beaten path. There is good hiking around the hostel, and excellent view of the volcano, and a great pool. There is hot water in the showers and the rooms are very comfortable. Kelly is a fantastic host who is easy to talk to and who has great...
