Well located hotel in San Gerardo de Dota with several hiking trails starting on the hotel grounds. Their Beautiful gardens attract many birds (several types of hummingbirds) and we saw several emerald toucanets and quetzals at about 40 metres from our room. Large and comfortable, but dark rooms with good beds. The hotel has an excellent cocktailbar (happy hour from 15.00 tot 17.00 hrs) and a very good restaurant. The reviewer who writes that you better eat elsewhere clearly didn't eat here. There's absolutely no reason to eat elsewhere, the cuisine is just excellent! We loved the concept: a family owned and managed hotel since many decades - the founder who's 94 now still lives in the house in front of the reception and goes visiting his quetzals every day - with a good vision on sustainability and ecology! We also appreciated the quetzal tour with Raúl, the grandson of the founder. Absolutely recomended!

Can't say enough about the quality of the junior suites, gardens, bird sightings (including the male and female quetzal), bar, and restaurant. Front desk excellent and very helpful as well. If you have time, bird with Marino. Bring layers! Cold at night and early morning, might rain in afternoon/evenings so bring a rain jacket as well. There are warm wool blankets in rooms and a space heater. The sunken tub is to die for on a cold evening! The fireplace is lovely, but I have never been able to keep a fire going there once the fire starter burned down. Overall--fantastic! Fabulous birds!!!! Reasonable price.

I will definitely return to Savegre, a family run slice of heaven in the cloud mountains of Costa Rica. There is no way to adequately describe the flora and fauna of this beautiful place. It is Eden! Hummingbirds, quetzals, parrots, flowers beyond belief. The grounds are maintained with such love and attention to detail. My room was comfy and felt like my own personal upscale cabin; the food was fantastic (homemade breads and cheeses); the bar had excellent drinks (see my photo of a mint chocolate martini) and the people who own this hotel are all family! Our tour guide was Raul, grandson of the man who cleared the land in 1954. He LOVES the land, the history, the animals and birds and nature in general. We learned SO much from him on our hikes, and he took photos on our phones through his telescope so he made us all seem like we worked for National Geographic with our final photos! Super duper nice folks, excellent place to stay! GO!
