The Kings Arms in Temple Sowerby, Cumbria, is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Eden Valley. Situated just east of the Lake District, we are ideally located at the centre of this gorgeous village. The pub and hotel have been under new ownership since January 2024. A major refurbishment of the guest rooms, bathrooms, and public areas was completed before we reopened in April 2024. Featuring a lounge, bar and games room with both a pool table and dart board, as well as a lovely beer garden, guests are able to relax and dine in comfort. Free parking is available. Staying at The Kings Arms Hotel makes it easy to experience Acorn Bank, a National Trust garden, a short walk away. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy our own fishing beat on the nearby river Eden. A popular overnight destination for walkers on the Lady Anne's Way and Settle to Carlisle Way and local walkers alike. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Detailed Reviews
The pub is located in the centre of the village, with good adjacent parking, and the locals appear to be friendly, and the pub welcoming. We took our two dogs with us, and they were able to stay either in our room or bar area. The only place they weren’t allowed was the restaurant. We left ours in the car whilst we eat. We were made fully aware of this on booking, and the additional £20 room charge for cleaning.
Room was spacious, clean and comfortable, at the top of the building, again we were asked if we were ok with this when we booked. All staff were friendly and polite, and took the COVID precautions seriously. Food was good,we had evening meal as well as breakfast, good selection available at both, with traditional Full English well up to scratch. They also do special packages for fly fishing fisherman and own a length the adjacent river bank for the purpose.
Only (very slight) criticism is that there was no steak on the evening menu, and that may be Gloria Estefan needs a change of CD occasionally in the restaurant. We had a lovely restful stay, will definitely consider staying again in the future. Thanks all.

As a group of 7 visitors for 4 nights (Mon/T/W/Thu) we were very happy with our stay.
The ground floor bar and dining area are excellent and clean and during our stay Covid-19 restrictions were rigorously applied for the benefit of all.
The bar meals and evening á le carté menu offer meals of real quality, with generous proportions and always served in a prompt and friendly manner.
Accommodation upstairs is excellent on the top floor but the older rooms of the first floor are a little "tired", though the essentials (bed and plenty of hot water) were good. We were in room 1 on the first floor which has a very agreeable view.
As a post-Covid promotion (I think) breakfast was included in our overnight price, as was an evening meal to a value of £20 per person. The evening food was sumptuous, but breakfast a little disappointing (no cereals?), with portions rather too small for the plate they were served on. (This last comment may be a little unfair but my expectation was for more I guess, though to be fair all was very tasty).

We visited a number of places before booking the Kings Arms for our Mums wake. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. They offered full private use of the facilities, so that our guests were not disturbed by Christmas parties. The Hotel had restaurant facilities, a pleasant sitting room and bar with beautiful fire and sofas. It was a lovely spread of food. The staff were always on hand to ensure that everything was to our liking. The venue is only a short drive from the new Eden Crematorium and so is a perfect place for a wake. We will be visiting again and look forward to having a meal in the restaurant.

Had a terrible time here. Staff were rude and did not feel welcome. They state they are dog friendly but on arrival stated twice that my dog would have to sleep in the car! To add to insult we were charged an extra £20.
The room they gave us was on top floor and bathroom was carpeted so not really hygienic or suited to a dog. The shower didnt work. This was reported the next morning. It was not sorted as we were told that it was not an emergency so we were expected to shower in cool water under low pressure. The room was very cold and no heating was on in the hotel. The hairdryer did not work properly either.
Trying to drink in the bar was impossible. Tables were booked out to residents. But we had to drink in a corridor or outside (cold and raining) and these tables were not taken at all.
The room was not cleaned, towels not changed etc. Had to request clean towels and a loo roll and staff quite rude about it and told they will only clean room at end of our stay. Thank goodness we were only there for 2 nights. Told they will not clean because of 'cross contamination' yet the staff were handling food, cutlery and drinks etc with bare hands and not wearing gloves anyway. Evident they do not understand cross infection and the principles of it.
On a plus the breakfast food was acceptable, but the evening food menu was basic and same price if in the bar or restaurant.
The parking is good with good access.
Despite the pleasing appearance on the outside, the hotel is rather tired looking and the staff could do with a personality transplant, especially the owner. Would rather camp out than stay here again...and probably warmer too.
Ps found out later this place has a bad reputation amongst the locals.

We were staying in the village, and after a long drive, I had booked here for dinner, not wanting to drive anymore that day.
Pleasant enough staff and we felt secure re covid, although no temp checks or tracing as far as we could see. However it was fairly quiet. My wife ordered a starter of calamari and a side of onion rings as she did not want a large meal, and I a prawn/anchovy pizza,
Calamari was the usual basic rings with sauce, and the onion rings were unfortunately very poor quality, the usual deep fried offering.
Such a shame as they can be nice if done well. My pizza was just Ok, and I suspect the base was a ready made one, as it certainly did not appear to be freshly made. In fact Weatherspoons do a better offering for a lower price!!.
Drinks were not inpiring, which is crucial for a pub. My local bitter and my wifes came lukewarm, and the larger I orderd later was almost tasteless...Very poor. Please, in todays market its bad practice to offer mediocre fayre, People will unfiortunately vote with their feet...as we will in future. Not a good experience I am afraid.

Stayed here for one night. The location is really nice, and ideal for walking in a much quieter area than the neighbouring lake district. The room was clean and spacious with a huge bathroom. The bar area is nice, evening meal was ok, staff friendly and attentive. Breakfast was good, served in the dining room with a nice menu which included Full English, Eggs Benedict, Kippers and Pancakes. Hope to return.

I chose this hotel as my my had never seen the lakes, and so I found a deal on buy a gift.
After 7 hours driving from East Sussex, with many diversions, it was nice to check in with the friendly staff. We threw our bags in the room, then went for a walk around the village as it was an amazing 25c. Upon returning to the hotel there was a nice sunset on the outside tables, and 4 other guests enjoying a drink, we joined them rather than unpacking. 2 hours later we dragged ourselves away, showered and unpacked ready for the evening meal. Very advisable to book, and there is not a lot else around.
The food and drinks were very nice, and would highly recommend the steak pie with a stilton crumble.
Next day we set off for an adventure after a decent breakfast. Fortunately we had brought lots of snacks and drinks with us, as there is no shop at all in the village. Had an amazing day in glorious weather, our favourite lake being the nearest Ullswater.
On our final day we decided not to rush home, but stay around the lakes for 1/2 day to enjoy the continuing good weather.
Overall a very pleasant experience in a friendly hotel. Only minus points are road noise (for us rural folk), lack of shop and be prepared to drive everywhere for sightseeing.

My family and I recently spent a week in Dartmouth, Devon to see friends and as part of our trip back to Scotland we decided to stop off in the Lake District.
Not really knowing the area, we quickly chose The Kings Arms Hotel as it was settled in a tranquil town and was within a short drive to most of the attractions / area of beauty we wished to see.
During our stay, the staff at The Kings Arms Hotel were polite, helpful and were extremely conscientious reference the current climate surrounding COVID-19. Their food was delightful and filling, and they are (and exactly what we needed), child friendly.
If you are travelling with small children, there is a small play park less than 200m away.
During our stay we managed to visit the Aira Force Waterfall, Lacy’s Caves and the surrounding area for afternoon walks. I would recommend The Kings Arms Hotel to any family wishing to visit the Lake District, especially with young children.

A warm welcome from friendly management and staff await you at the Kings Arms, Temple Sowerby. The rooms are all recently refurbished and the food is excellent. Most importantly, the place has a relaxing family atmosphere.
Just off the A66, Temple Sowerby is an ideal base to explore Cumbria. The northern Lake District, dozens of castles, stately homes, ornamental gardens, prehistoric remains, quaint villages and other places of interest are a short driving distance away. By going a little further, Hadrian’s Wall, along with a number of its forts and museums, can easily be accommodated in a day’s trip.
For those who would like a day without driving, you can catch buses to both Penrith and Appleby from a stop close to the Kings Arms.
If your interest is fishing, the Kings Arms has a beat along the nearby River Eden which guests can use for £10 a day.

We recently stopped at the Kings Arms for one night to break a journey to Carlisle.
We were warmly welcomed at reception and registering was a smooth and easy process. The room was clean and spacious . We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant which was pleasantly served and the food was tasty.
Would definitely use again when requiring a break from travel .
