A watermill built atop the River Wensum in 1757 is now a beautiful country pub, set in the heart of the glorious Norfolk countryside. We have recently refurbished this historic building to create a haven for pub lovers and foodies. Our relaxing guest bedrooms all have soothing views of the gardens and river, making them the perfect place to relax and unwind. Located near the Georgian market town of Fakenham, Sculthorpe Mill is surrounded by opulent farming land, and next door to the Hawk an Owl Trust – a haven for nature lover and walkers alike. For those looking for the pleasures of the beach, Sculthorpe Mill is just a stone’s throw from the stunning North Norfolk Coast. The stately homes of Sandringham, Houghton and Holkham are all within a 20 minute drive.

We have just spent a lovely 4 night stay in this hotel. The area around the hotel is beautiful with its stream running below. The hotel had put in place social distancing, a one way system, reduced numbers of customers in the bar, hand sanitiser around the bar and hotel to keep everyone safe. Our room overlooked the stream and garden, a beautiful view. The room was spacious, nicely laid out with its own private bathroom. It was decorated to a nice standard, and had been cleaned thoroughly before we arrived and smelt fresh as soon as we opened the door. There was everything we needed, plenty of tea and coffee, towels, hot shower, which is normally lacking in older properties. The bed was comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. We visited the restaurant a number of times throughout our stay the food was lovely every time, they obviously have a great chef. Especially loved the steak and the cheese board. And breakfast included in the price again was freshly cooked and of a high quality, and for the price thought was exceptional. All the staff were friendly, really cheery and happy to help in anyway they could. The place was immaculate including the gardens which were beautiful to sit out in on a sunny afternoon. There's lots of places to stay so for us was a wonderful few days and will definitely be back. Thank you for making our first trip away after isolation so enjoyable.

We took a weekend to explore some of north Norfolk and stayed at the Sculthorpe Mill. Very pretty riverside location and wonderful old building. Rooms were spacious and well taken of. The team at the pub/hotel had very good social distancing and hand washing/sanitising measures in place. The food was great, we ate in the riverside garden, the steak & kidney pudding was really good, as were the salads and burgers. Breakfast on Sunday morning was a first class English!

Beautiful setting in and out, we sat upstairs which is very nicely fitted out, good atmosphere too. Staff were attentive however on two occasions they failed to bring out sauces and tap water. Tiny things, but not great.

Main gripe was menu choice. There were 5 or 6 dishes per setting but I didn’t like anything off the starter menu, only two off the main and 2 off desert. Admittedly I’m not a fish or spice lover, but otherwise I’m not fussy. My wife’s starter arrived with random raw radish sticks.

Overall, none of us were blown away, wouldn’t rush back. Maybe bar snacks are the way to go. Ps - bar staff were excellent, very friendly. Pps - the smaller bar rooms downstairs don’t really work, feel very isolated and uncomfortable.

We booked to stay for 4 nights at Sculthorpe Mill but unfortunately only stayed 3 due to the issues.

The staff were lovely and very accommodating however we don’t feel for the price per night the stay we got was up to scratch.

It didn’t seem that the rooms had been ‘finished’. Although they had beautiful decor they weren’t practical and seemed empty. The heating wasn’t working in any of the rooms. The first two nights were so cold we moved to a different room which was slightly warmer however still too cold. There was no tea facilities in the room, no where to store your clothes (living out of a suitcase for 4 nights?) no TV (which I know is personal preference) awful Wifi signal also. In addition to the above, the bathroom wasn’t fully wallpapered, tiling wasn’t finished, dust on the floor from drilling a shelf on the wall and floor not fitted properly. All not seemingly appropriate issues for the price we paid?

None of the staff, waiters & waitresses wore masks. I understand it’s not enforced anymore however I think most people will agree that it would definitely be appreciated in a hospitality setting and should be a practice that is adopted.

Breakfast was a bit odd- although lovely and good quality. You only get one choice of four items, porridge, yoghurt, full English (1 sausage, 2 bacon, 1 tomato, 1 small mushroom, a pot of beans) and a vegetarian breakfast which subs the bacon and sausage for a vegetarian sausage.

Please note, the staff were fantastic very lovely and accommodating.

The manager Wayne seemed to genuinely understand our concerns and asked for feedback by email which I’ve provided. He allowed us to be refunded our last night and gave us a discount off our food bill. However we’re very disappointed to have not received a reply considering how comprehensive we made the feedback, as requested. I noticed another review was ignored also… not the reassuring response I would have expected.

I feel if the above issues are addressed this place would be a lovely get away for the price asked currently. But not at the standard it is now.

Actually it should be rated a 4. The site advertises a flat screen tv which none of the rooms appeared to have. Something to do with sound proofing.
Room no 4 was lovely with a plentiful supply of expresso coffee pods, tea and water. There were two windows, one facing the river and the other facing the fields. So so quiet….lovely.
Breakfast was delicious and at a very civilised time 8-10 am.
The staff were all lovely, in particular Toby and Bianca.
We had dinner on the Sunday and it was delicious and well presented. There were 12 of us and the food arrived at the same time and piping hot. No complaints at all.
Give Sculthorpe Mill a try. In the summer it’s truly gorgeous and well worth a visit.

Just back from a lovely lunch at Sculthorpe Mill.
They have really made the old place look welcoming.
The food was just perfect too. They dealt with my dietary requirements wonderfully and nothing was any trouble. Our waitress was delightful too which made for a convivial two and a half hours.
We chose to sit outside in the covered area, which has been well thought out enabling people to walk to their tables easily, with enough room for wheelchair access. And bespoke seating in different areas. Calm and peaceful. 100% recommend.
We had plaice with capers, a vegetable similar to camfer but called something beard, tasted amazing, and new potatoes with brown butter - so tasty. Desert had to be tried. I had a salted caramel chocolate pot, very indulgent, and Isabelle has pecan and salted caramel slice with cinnamon ice-cream. Both deserts hit the mark beautifully. The curtisy water with, blood orange, lemon, lime and apple was a lovely touch.
As you can see, we forgot to take a picture of the main course because we were both hungry, the bones tell the story.
And all in a well kept garden with great onward views and beside the river Wensum.

Sculthorpe Mill stands in an idyllic setting and the few staff we encountered were helpful. We chose not to eat there, found accommodation dreadful and over-priced. My wife and I were booked in for three nights, but we left after one night, despite being offered another room.
The décor was horrendous, dark and tasteless and there simply was not enough light in the en suite, just one small ceiling light and two small lights above the sink, one of which did not work. On booking, I had requested two single beds. What we got was a huge double bed, which was fine. But the other bed was a converted settee, which meant it could not be used as a settee. And there was nowhere to hang clothes, yet no mention was made of there being no wardrobe.
On top of everything else, the management had the audacity to take the full cost of a three-night stay from our bank account money on the day of booking. Sculthorpe Mill, wake up, you’re living in a dream world! This mill is darker and more miserable than even George Eliot’s Mill on the Floss, a book I also plan never to revisit.

This Hotel is in incredibly beautiful grounds and has extremely polite and friendly staff. The inside is very nicely done with a good colour scheme by a talented hand. That's all the good stuff now to the food. My partner had the cod which we thought was overpriced at £24.50 when we saw the size of it. Also it was just plonked upside down, skin up in other words on what looked like a load of basil leaves thrown on the plate with a few half tomatoes and a drizzle of oil. It looked very untidy and very unappetising. In fact it was a very good piece of cod although it was very small and it was very well cooked but not seasoned so not so tasty. My partner had a glass of merlot which he said was delicious. I had the Apple Flower soft drink which was way, way too sweet but a good taste. For lunch I had the bean and beetroot burger which could have been better. It had more beetroot than bean so it was a little soggy. It also arrived plonked in the middle of the plate without one bit of garnish. Presentation is a large part of food so I have to say neither of these dishes gain any marks. We eat a lot and I've never seen a burger served in a restaurant in this way. The chips were really well cooked and delicious. I don't want to really diss this place because it does an overall good job but I'm not sure we will go back to eat there. We will probably go for a drink and a snack Shame as we were looking forward to it

My husband and I have just spent an idyllic three days at the hotel, the drive up and the first impression was stunning. From the moment we walked in the door and were greeted by Michael we felt welcomed and comfortable. The staff we all amazing and whilst being busy always took time to answer questions or just stop and chat with us if we so chose, no request was either too large or too small. We were shown to our room and our luggage was carried up for us, the room itself was very pretty, clean and comfortable with amazing views over the garden and countryside, and it was kept clean and tidy for us at all times. Mealtimes were lovely, all the food was delicious and presented well, if we asked for any changes these were handled without fuss. The breakfasts were also very tasty. In fact the whole experience could not be faulted. We were able to get some names, so thank you to Michael, Ian, Rachel, Tiffany, Harry, Tegan, Bianca and Siobhan. But also please give a big shout out to all the staff on shifts during our stay. They made it special, we will definitely be coming back.

Sculthorpe Mill has always been a great location straddling the River Wensum. But we gave up going because it se census into ordinariness with poor food disinterested staff and no atmosphere.
New owners have transformed it
Great food. Packed out lunch time restaurant. Delightful staff really interested in serving customers. Just add this to your must get to North Norfolk restaurant list
