Stayed here in a twin room with a friend. Room basic but clean and comfy. Down side no wardrobe. However Michael, the manager and his staff were delightful, so very friendly kind and helpful in every way. Big shout out to the hard working lady chef who single handedly made us 2 lovely evening meals. Thankyou guys it was a pleasure. Jeanne and Jennifer Aug 10/11 2020

We stayed here for 1 night en route to Edinburgh to break up the journey from Yorkshire. The pictures on booking.com are completely different that what you actually get. Upon arrival we were told that our room didn’t have a toilet but had a shower.... ideal! The toilet was down the hall but alas didn’t flush and any body could use it even though we were told it was just for us. The room was damp and smelt fusty.. it’s apparent they knew this as there were little pots everywhere trying to soak up moisture. The tv remotes were covered in filth. Wall paper was peeling off and it resembled more of a crack den or half way house then a hotel. The walls on the way up to the room were covered in marks and stains like it hadn’t been cleaned in months. Which begs the question what has the owners/ manager been doing during lock down? Every other pub I’ve been in has upped safety and cleanliness 100% however this pub is clearly chancing it. Not one customer out of the 5 I saw were asked to track and trace. No masks on staff and 1 bloke was stood at the bar. Not once did myself or my husband see anyone clean or sanitise anything. Granted you get what you pay for and the room wasn’t very expensive however that doesn’t excuse the lack of care and disregard for public safety. I’m at an absolute loss about this hotel, I’ve visited concentration camps that were nicer. Anyway going for a COVID test now and I’ll send you the results with my letter for compensation.

We stayed in a double room and expected it to be fairly basic, which it was, but it was clean and tidy. We were at the front of the pub/ hotel and it’s very noisy. Road traffic and clientele, that’s without live music. Internet was poor and constantly dropped out. We booked a table to eat in the evening having checked out the on line menus. When we sat down at 7pm we were asked if we would like a dessert as the cook wanted to leave early as it was a quiet Saturday night, we had no idea and were told that was ok they’d ask him to stay on...... The menu was not as on line with limited offers. I ordered steak and ale pie, chips peas and gravy. The pie was anaemia. and collapsed, chips were flaccid not a sign of anything crispy, the gravy refused to leave the jug even when turned upside down. The young guy who seemed to be charge offered to have hot water mixed into the gravy to help it escape the jug...the chips he took back to the kitchen to get crisped up saying it was difficult to get the colour right for people...they return cooked to a darker brown but still flaccid. He explained that they were famous for the chips..... His attitude was really poor and truly defensive, this was clearly all my fault for being fussy.... The pub belonged to a chain and all the cooking was done to a schedule he explained, other people ate it. I just couldn’t eat the meal, the pie had been microwaved, the peas were now cold, along with the immovable gravy. I declined a pudding... My husband ordered bacon chop and fried egg, chips peas and onions rings. Exactly as before the chop had been microwaved, the fat was pale , the egg seemed to have been microwaved too. Same problem with the chips. I would definitely not return. The attitude was as poor as the food. The two ladies serving were trying to help and offered to get things re cooked but at least they were pleasant.
