We enjoyed our stay at castle with friendly staff and good food. The shower in the room was useless and barely functioned. The room itself was a good size but a little worn (as expected from an older building).

Stayed here for two nights with husband, 10 year old twins & 5 month puppy. It was a perfect break & the staff were very efficient, friendly & a huge asset to the hotel. The food was excellent (we were on a dinner bed & breakfast rate) & they were very accommodating of the children (although the children’s menu was fairly limited). The wine list was very good. Drinks were expensive but service was efficient & choice wide. The room was in need of refurbishment but perfectly adequate for our needs & made us very relaxed as we had the puppy & children. The other areas of the hotel we used were comfortable and quirky. There was always an object to arouse curiosity or discussion! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay & plan to return. The staff really made us feel so comfortable & relaxed so a big thanks to them from us

We stayed here from 8 - 10- June and the hotel was lovely with great walks and food was definitely its saving grace. I wrote and emailed the manager informing of several details that needed looking into but have not had a reply from her hence this review. We stayed in the Rattray room which was fine and had a little toilet and separate bathroom, however, the toilet door had no handle and had to be pulled over by a little snob which you could just get hold off, there was a gaping hole where the lock/handle should have been. The television would not work at all and when we asked about it were told it was the weather although the weather was fine, I know it is hard to get internet in these far out places but surely we could have had the basic channels??? The thing that really made me write this review is that whilst we were out during the day we came back to a notice on the window ledge saying wet paint - they had come in whilst we were out and painted one wee window ledge - there is no way during Covid that they should have been painting in our room esp whilst we were resident there. Also there are very little hand sanitiser stations, one at the front door and certainly not one near the dining room where it def should have been. Any other hotel we have been to which were nowhere near as expensive as this one had loads of stations for cleaning your hands! I would not have written this review if the manager had had the decency to answer my letter. Definitely would not stay here again nor would I advise anyone to stay here during the Covid pandemic.. May I add that the food was fabulous and the staff were all lovely. These faults should be management level. Why was the window ledge and door not fixed during lockdown, there has been plenty of time for these things to be done.

Good evening, I am afraid that I have not received a letter containing these details, otherwise I would of course have responded. I completely agree that some of these issues are unacceptable and I do wish that you had spoken to me whilst you were with us. Regarding the painting of the window ledge, it was an exterior window ledge that was painted and the notice was put there to warn you of the wet paint when opening the window, I am very sorry that this caused such concern. Although we do not have a sanitising station at the entrance to our dining room there is one at the front door which is no more than 5 meters from the dining room and I believe that is sufficient. Should you wish to discuss your review further please do feel free to call me on 01250 885224. Best wishes, Mhairi

We chose this hotel for a peaceful holiday and unfortunately it does not live up to the price tag. The room we were put in overlooked the back of the hotel above the kitchen where the deliveries are made so we were woken up on the first morning by DPD. The second morning was a washer/dryer waking us up so we asked to be moved. The staff allowed for this but were downgraded to a family room on the top floor whilst we were out for the day. We accepted it over the phone thinking it would be better. However, this room also overlooked the kitchen in the attic, was much smaller with a smaller bed (not the four poster paid for) so we asked to be moved back to our old room after assessing it when we got back from being out. To our surprise, the staff had already rented our old room out without finding out whether the new one was acceptable once viewed. Nevertheless, the staff put us in another room with a four poster bed which seemed better than the original. However, the people next door to us were slamming doors all night and the ones opposite had dogs which yapped and woke us up the next morning. The next two nights were unbearably hot (being roughly 20 degrees during the day)with the radiator thermostat broken and operating at full temperature (even with the windows open). The final day of our holiday was ruined by having to go to an early breakfast in order to be off the premises for 9am, This was requested for the road to the hotel to be resurfaced. We then had to remain away from the hotel until after 6pm when the sub contractors had left, so remaining out for 9 hours. Had we stayed the next day, it would have been the same scenario. On that same final night returning tired after being out all day, there appeared to be a herd of elephants in the room above when we just wanted to relax. Facilities:- The shower in the first bedroom was the worst I have ever experienced in any hotel and is very old and tired so avoid the Makenzie room. The bar was also being refurbished whilst staying at the hotel so that was not available to us either. Dogs allowed:- I came away for some peace as I live next door to noisy dogs at home and didn't appreciate that dogs are allowed in the rooms. They barked a lot (which was my main reason to get away from at home) but I also feel that it is unhygienic to have them in the hotel and rooms. Food:- When you receive 2 slices of toast (thinly sliced) and a small amount of butter at breakfast you have to ask for more, This is quite mean and is not necessary when you could keep customers happy by giving two slices each and a little more butter. The order for breakfast was taken incorrectly and inconsistently served such as the porridge. When I received my full Scottish breakfast, the sausage and beans were tasteless. Perhaps introducing a decent pork sausage and using Heinz baked beans would sort out this small problem. All in all, it is a tired hotel needing refurbishment which I understand takes time and money but it is the smaller affordable things which would have made the difference to our stay and could be changed immediately such as the breakfast changes. On a positive note the hotel is in an unrivalled fantastic position and has a great dinner chef so it has a chance to be fabulous given the right investment and direction. The best part about this hotel is a young lady called Shannon who was very sweet and most helpful to us during our stay so perhaps she should be running it in the future. To sum up, it is not a terrible hotel but the charges should be a maximum of £100 per night in its present form.

This is a special place. The location, being isolated in beautiful countryside, is amazing and we loved walking on the estate. We dined in the restaurant both nights and the food was excellent. We also had a platter at lunchtime including venison salami, smoked duck, trout, hot and cold smoked salmon which was fantastic and reasonably priced given it was enough for both of us. We stayed in Stewart. It was a large room with a four poster bed and had everything we needed except a shaving point for our toothbrush. The room was traditional so do not expect a modern bathroom, but personally I liked that because it felt in keeping with the surroundings. I loved having an old bath so big I could stretch out and float in it, rather than something modern which would not have been so much fun and would have felt out of place. There did not seem to be anyone particularly "in charge" at reception or in the restaurant but the staff were friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
