I’ve stayed here several times over the years for work. The rooms are roomy, quiet, plenty of hot water, beds very comfortable. Parking is nearby. The staff are all super friendly, and Paul makes a great breakfast. The staff and customers of the Duke of York are all very friendly as well. We had the Sunday Carvery and it was also great. Food here in general is very good as well. Shepton is a beautiful village and the area is great for exploring. I recommend the Burrow Hill Distillery as well. Have fun.

Visiting friends in the area we chose to stay at the Duke of York for a couple of nights. It was an excellent choice. The room was well decorated, warm and clean with plenty of drawers and wardrobe space. The lighting was just right, subdued when required but with a light bright enough to see to apply make-up. The en-suite has a large heated towel rail which kept the room warm. There was also a large walk-in shower. Breakfast was huge and well cooked. The pub was a friendly place and the food was delicious. Our friends joined us for our second evening. They had never visited before, despite living in the next village for many years. We were all very impressed by the food and the service. They said they will definitely be back, as will we.

We stopped off at the Duke of York for a late lunch. It was near to the time when they stop serving food but they were happy to accommodate us and be flexible on what they would serve us. The food was decent quality, served quite quickly and reasonably priced. The staff and locals were friendly. Toilet facilities are good.

I loved this place! Stayed for 2 nights visiting relatives and exploring. A small old atmospheric beamed country pub in the middle of a picturesque Somerset village, surrounded by rolling fields, lanes and walks. What could be better? Choose your own breakfast time, and wander into the pub to find landlord Paul or his charming wife waiting with a huge cooked breakfast with the sun streaming through the windows, across the beams. The accommodation, purpose built compact units extending out from the rear of the pub, is comfortable, quiet and well equipped with all the facilities and connectivity you could desire. No pinball poker machines, discos or other intrusive noise, The Duke of York provides the perfect peaceful weekend country getaway, and a base for exploring the area. Best visit ? ...Historic Barrington Court, used for the filming of Wolf Hall, a short walk across the fields at the rear. There are many others. Highly recommended in every respect.…

Went for Sunday lunch, had one of the best meals we have ever had, plenty of meat the pork was lovely not dry like it can be, the beef was lovely, plenty of choices of veg, Yorkshire puds and lovely crackling. Then I had apple crumble and custard,a lovely lot of crumble and custard, we throughly enjoyed our meal, and will definitely be returning here again.

Stayed on night whilst working in the area and was not disappointed. Friendly greeting at the bar, comfy clean hotel room. Booked dinner, we had a chicken satay dish and rib eye, both cooked very well. Breakfast was ok too. All staff were very friendly.

Had the most delicious meal here last night . Really good food and refreshingly good value . Thanks so much . Lucky to have it on our doorstep. Too easy to look further a field sometimes when what you want is right in front of your face ! It was a real treat and a lovely evening .

Another return visit to meet up with family members we hadn't seen in 5 years. From accommodation, to service, food, and hospitality from the landlord and his wife, everything was perfect, the bar and waiting staff you could not fault either. Cannot wait for a return visit next time we are in the area.

Have just returned home after walking out of the pub. My family have recently moved to the village and I am visiting and we thought what better than having dinner and drinks at the local pub! We booked at table for 8pm, so we arrived then and it’s a Saturday night so inevitably it’s going to be busy as expected! We sat down in the restaurant and awaited some menu’s and acknowledgement. 45 minutes later we get a menu. We then overhear the table next to us who ask a waiter if they could order to which his reply was “we aren’t taking orders right now”. The table as you can imagine weren’t too happy. So we then realise that we could be sat for a while but still had a little faith left. Another member of staff returns to that table a while later and asks if they’d had their orders taken, they explained the situation and the staff member takes their order and that they’ll push their order. We then are savvy to the fact that we are going to be sat with no order taken for a very long time. You feel a bit forgotten about back there! We ask at the bar what the realistic time would be before we can order and eat to which we are told 45 minutes. So at this point we’re fed up - so we leave our drinks and walk out. We were so looking forward to a dinner and when you have actually booked a table it’s confusing that you aren’t considered or even acknowledged. The bar is busy yes - but you’re also running a restaurant that needs attention too. We even accommodated to the pub and made our reservation later as they were quite booked up at the time we had originally asked. It’s so bad that the staff are telling their customers that they won’t be taking orders. You just can’t do that! I feel sorry for that table. No one communicates with you or explains anything! Don’t run a restaurant on Friday or Saturday nights (busy trading nights - everyone knows this who works in a pub, restaurant, shop etc) if it can’t be handled and dealt with efficiently. Basically just a bad experience - we would have rather been rung up and told it was extremely busy or not possible if you had overbooked and we would have had made other plans. It felt so disorganised in the restaurant but all hands on deck in the bar. I would love to know if you serve the bar the full menu too - that could be part of the problem. Just disappointed! I look forward to spending these days with my parents and it’s sad we had to leave instead of having a really nice night with them.…
