I wanted to like this place. The gardens are spectacular. The public rooms are lovely. But then it drops off.

Upon arriving (at 4pm) we were greeted with "we just rang you to see where you were" because the proprietor wanted to go into Berry. Not a big issue, but not good to be made to feel a little guilty at the outset. At check-in we asked about internet access and we were given the password & told about the charges - not a problem. Except it didn't work - not on our iPad or PC. Went back to reception - no-one to be found. There was a "Ring this number if reception is unattended" sign at reception - rang it a few times - no answer.

The room itself was probably nice a few years ago, but desperately in need of refurbishment. Dirty white sofa and carpet in the mini bar area was manky. Black towels - I'm sure they were clean - but the black is offputting, and lots of little signs telling you what to do. Not quite Fawlty Towers, but created the impression. Terrible mosquitoes at night - to open the windows you need to open the screens, and dozens of them crept in during those few moments. We spent most of the night squashing them.

Breakfast was adequate, although when I picked up a plate to put toast on there was a squashed used peanut butter sachet under it. I handed it to the proprietor and her response was "Oh".

When checking out we mentioned the non-operational internet access and received an argument: "it works for everyone else". We weren't charged for it, but as we were on a work trip, not having it was a pain, and being given grief about it was inexcusable.

In short, I think this was a very nice place when first set up, but it's a bit tatty now. If the management were charming you could overlook it, but they are a little condescending. It's a pity, as the setting is beautiful. It just needs nicer people who will put a bit of money into it.

This reviewer is obviously a teacher as indicated by the pseudonym. The reviewer booked a Saturday night only stay which we do not normally consider as per our website. At her request, we arranged a booking for 2 massages in their room for 3pm and 4pm. As the masseuse had been waiting for over an hour, we decided at 4pm to contact the guests to find out their ETA as there may have been traffic problems etc. We left a message on their mobile phone. Why we were regarded as rude on their arrival is a mystery. Our internet access was working and we cannot be held responsible if guests cannot operate their equipment. We have since turned the access off as there is no demand for it as most guests have their iphones and ipads. We are unsure as to why these guests needed our access when they had their own ipad and PC. As a small country hotel, it is impossible to have the reception desk manned 24 hours a day. However, we are usually contactable if required as we live on the property. We do not accept the reviewers criticisms of the rooms and its furnishings etc. Many of our sophisticated guests who have used the room just love it. With regard to the “terrible mosquitoes”, the bay windows in the room open out to the gardens so of course you need to open the insect screens first. If you do this at night with all lights in the room turned on then of course you are going to attract some insects. To try and assist all of our guests who do not understand this we have placed insect sprays and repellents in the rooms. In this case they apparently were not located. This is a country property as most guests are aware!!!! As a generalisation, guests should understand that it is difficult to be charming to those who are inconsiderate, offhanded, discourteous and lack basic social skills. Readers should refer to the many other reviews posted on Tripadvisor by this reviewer who has been so critical of many other establishments and draw your own conclusions. In our view, this response dose not contain speculation as to the identity of the reviewer; and the comments are not of a personal nature but of the appropriate facts.

Last weekend we stayed 2 nights. The room was large and very comfortable although a quite pricey for what it was. Did not see the proprietors until check out when the bill was paid. In this modern age I was a little disappointed that there was no inquiry as to whether or not we had an enjoyable stay. I minor matter but it struck me as unusual.
The important miss was during breakfast when a guest at my table asked for some mushrooms on the side of the eggs and bacon. Despite the fact that mushrooms comprised one of the available choices, he was told that the chef was not prepared to alter any aspect of the printed menu

This was our second visit to this very pretty hotel, which is set in beautiful gardens and close to the Berry township. We made a second visit because we had such a nice experience the first time. The room was very pleasant and quite spacious, quiet, understated decor. However, the TV was small for the size of room and we were disappointed with the bathroom. For this price I would have expected better facilities, equipment and toiletries. It was also cold in the bathroom as the heating had been disabled - strange thing to do in Winter. I felt the standards had slipped since our previous visit.
The breakfast spread is very tasty and is not the usual offering that you get in many places.

This place is now called Jaspers Berry and is a wedding venue. We attended a venue a few days ago and the place was just amazing. Reminded us of an old colonial bungalow in South Asia. Tastefully furnished and amazing service. The staff went that extra mile to keep the guests happy. The food was served warm and just tasted great.
Compliments to the chef and staff

Obviously there is a distinction between a weekend at Woodbyne and a wedding at Woodbyne.
Woodbyne is a beautiful place, the gardens, the rooms, the breakfast - all true BUT...
For five star prices you will not get five star treatment.
The proprietors
* increased prices two weeks before the wedding with no notice nor explanation - a matter of courtesy I would think
* charged an extra $1000 to have photos taken in the garden - even though you are required to book out all the rooms at $330 per night, minimum 2 nights
* charged a $900 rubbish removal fee (all in the contact but incredulous isn't it?)
* didn't have a signing table set up and made our celebrant organise it herself at the last minute (we did check with the owners first and they assured us they would do it)
* had to be asked to clean the chairs (which we had to set up ourselves) and also clean the ones inside
* advertise that they can fit 60 people easily into the "school room" but this requires you to have tables set up on the verandah out of view of all the proceedings
* charged my daughter $35 extra to have her 2 year old sleep in the same bed as her. They don't provide bedding for children for health reasons!
* the drink service was appalling. Guests were told to empty their glass before getting a refill. They were told where to sit to drink, not to take their glasses out onto the verandah. By 8.30 there was a queue at the bar and a 10 minute wait to get a drink. Service virtually stopped at 9pm. RSA was used as an excuse although no guests were overly enebriated and all were either staying on premises or travelling on the bus we had organised
* insulted both our musician/singer and our MC and harassed the band
* ordered the band to stop playing at 9.30pm not allowing the final song and farewell to the bride and groom. Guests were unsure what was happening and started to leave. We paid up to 10pm
* have a security guard harassing guests as they were leaving including the ones who were staying overnight (please note we are very respectful, well-behaved people who did not cause any damage or any problems)
* stomped loudly along the verandah at 6.30am collecting rubbish which we would have happily done at a more reasonable hour
* chastised guests who arrived for breakfast at 9.35am - 9.45am being cut off time

If you are considering a wedding at Woodbyne I would urge you to go over every detail of the contract and read all their silly little rules. Make sure you are on the same page as the owners. As long as you are prepared to do EVERYTHING their way you won't have a problem.
Another way to gauge their reputation is to ask around Berry. Sadly we did that after the wedding - wish we had done it before we signed on the dotted line.
Also, ask to sign their guest book! Guess what? THEY DON"T HAVE ONE! I wonder why?

My husband and I stayed at this location over the Christmas/ New year period two years ago, and it is still considered by us to be the best B&B we've stayed in.

From the stunning grounds to the beautiful furnishings, to the freshly baked cake left at the end of your bed when you return from a walk in Berry, it was a wonderful experience and we have sent many friends and family Woodbyne's way.

Our friends had been telling us about Woodbyne and what a wonderful experience they had had , so we decided to see for ourselves.

From the moment we arrived we felt pampered, from the elegant rooms to the wonderful food - breakfast at Woodbyne is an amazing affair - it can only be described as sumptuous and definitely not to be missed!

The owners were absolutely charming and nothing was a problem. They were always in the background if we required anything, but we felt they were very aware of giving their guests great privacy.

We have travelled extensively and believe Woodbyne is truly up there with the best boutique hotels.

Thankyou Woodbyne, we will certainly be recommending you to our friends and we are already looking forward to our next visit.

Absolutely agree with everything said by previous reviewer - Renael. A roadside motel - with very beautiful gardens.

Don't stay here if you value peace and quiet. A freeway (with lots of heavy traffic) runs right beside the property. You can't open the doors to the balcony of the room without being engulfed by noise (not to mention fumes). Such a contrast to the really beautiful gardens.

We found the owner/manager very unpleasant and unhelpful too. We made our booking through Wotif and didn't notice that, although the price was the same as booking direct through the hotel, it didn't include breakfast (which the direct price did.). The manager/owner was very quick to point out that we'd have to pay additional for breakfast (on top of thesome $400 a night) as he had to pay Wotif for the booking. Nowhere else to eat for miles - but needless to say we didn't eat there, and left with a very bad impression.

Wouldn't dream of going back or recommending it.

I was fortunate to have 2 wonderful days at Woodbyne last year and was amazed that such a peaceful and elegant place existed in NSW and so close to Sydney. The gardens are just beautiful and I felt it was something straight out of England. I lived in Melbourne for many years, where there are many magnificient gardens and homes so I really appreciated all that Woodbyne had to offer. Woodbyne has combined understated style, class, warmth and charm. No matter where you are there is always a beautiful view. The rooms are striking and extremely comfortable. The atmosphere encourages you to be relaxed on arrival, yet you still feel you are staying in luxurious surrounds. I found Woodbyne to be a rare combination of style and comfort. Breakfast in the old school house is truly a treat. I would and have recommended it to many of my friends.

We booked for a three night stay at Woodbyne. This hotel is located just a few minutes drive outside of Berry, a picturesque and somewhat twee township about 2 hours drive from Sydney. The hotel is a boutique style type but much more a B and B. On the plus side, the gardens are truly beautiful with statues and fountains and magnificent hedges. The breakfast, which is included in the tariff is also very good and can be taken in the lovely garden. Sadly that is about as good as it gets. Our room, typical of them all, was quite plain and simple. The bed was very comfortable but our stay was spoiled by the fact that the curtains were not lined and as our room faced east, it was dazzling sunshine at 6.30am, not very relaxing. The bathroom was very ordinary - tiny acrylic bath, cheap fittings and devoid of style. If you are paying $330 per night, I expect to have a level of luxury not a level of a youth hostel. The information pack on the room, just some printed sheets in a ring binder youth hostel style, says things like " if you mark the carpet or rug, you will be charged" and " if anything is taken from the room you will be charged" . It seems like the owners are truly over it. There is an air of resentment and a touch of Basil Fawlty type management on offer. We chose to stay here based on the photos on the web, but the reality is very different. The pool is only slightly larger than a spa and not heated and VERY important, the gates are not working properly so those with children take note. The TV is tiny, smaller than my computer screen and there is no cable tv. There is very limited Internet access. An establishment like this should have wifi access and provide guests with the login code as well as decent TV equipment. It comes back to the price, if you are paying $330 per night, there is an expectation of quality. Unfortunately, Woodbyne overcharges and under delivers.
