Travel has been very difficult these past two years with Covid, so we decided that we would stay close to home and explorer Northern Ontario. We were looking for a good area for photography with great accommodations, amenities, and onsite dining. We found it all, plus some, at the Marten River Lodge with hosts Peter and Tania. We stayed in a cozy log cabin, that they had ready for us, down to having the fireplace and lights on. Because we didn't want to drag food, and bedding, we opted for the American Plan. With all the health and safety precautions, we were unable to each in the dining room, so our meals were promptly served at a set time in our cabins. The meals were top-notch, and I would recommend choosing the American Plan vs cooking on your own. But if you were wanting to do the latter, they had a BBQ at each cabin, stove/oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, and even a large bonfire in the evening for smores and hotdogs! Now neither Rosemarie nor I know how the run a boat but Peter personally took us out on the river for photography. For fun, we also took the optional ATV tour. Now this was a MUST!!! They are truly dog-friendly and my little Westie loved being on the boat and ATV. The whole site was well maintained. They have cabins for single or family groups. While there was no AC, location right on the water with large screened-in porches. Great for fishing, free WiFi in the family-style lounge. Lots of amenities. Great hosts and the chef is fabulous. Wonderful gazebo and bonfire areas. The cabins were spotless, and the docks, boats, equipment, outbuildings, and grounds were well maintained. Would I recommend the Marten River Lodge? Absolutely! Would I go again? You bet!

We did a four-night stay at Marten River Lodge at the end of September. Tania and Peter are fabulous hosts and provided absolutely wonderful hospitality during our stay. Cabin #5 was warm and very cozy, even on a couple of chilly nights. Our bed was very comfortable and the cabin was spotless. Screened porches are a bonus, even though this time of year there were not many insects. Our boat was in excellent condition and Peter had it gassed and ready to go every morning. In the evening he had the campfire lit and ready for all to enjoy. Tania is lovely and checked with us regularly to see if we needed anything. The lodge was open and had a nice fireplace if you felt like bringing a drink and playing pool, reading or watching TV. We went fishing every day, but didn't catch much even though minnows and worms were provided as part of the package. We probably should have had Peter give us a guided fishing tour. Overall, it was an amazing and relaxing stay - just what we came for! We'll definitely return to Marten River Lodge.

My husband and I just returned from the Marten River Lodge and had an incredible fishing adventure. The owners, Peter and Tania, and their daughter, Meagan, are a wonderful, generous family--who will go out of their way to please you to ensure you have the best time. They couldn't have been nicer. Peter was our fishing guide one day and Meagan was our guide on another. Both were fantastic and helped us catch plenty of fish. The shore lunches were so delicious, as were all the breakfasts and dinners. We highly recommend the American Plan (food included) but you can do your own cooking if you want. The cabins are rustic but that's exactly what we were looking for, but they are well equipped. The lodge is warm and cozy and full of games, books and videos. We couldn't have had a better time and we highly recommend this fishing lodge, We will definitely be back. Thank you Peter, Tania and Meagan.

Our group of 7, 3 fathers and 4 sons just returned from a fishing trip at Marten River Lodge. I was the main organizer and did my research on Trip Advisor and other searches. We live in Toronto and the goal was to catch fish and not drive for 2 days. The bulk of the reviews seemed very positive for Marten River Lodge. The hosts in the reviews were Ray and Donna. I started my correspondence with Tania!!! I was a little concerned as the place had changed hands. Fortunately I just assumed the programs would be similar and it was a great result. The lodge and dining room were closed and we simply stayed in our cabin. We had a fire pit and brought cards. The place was great for us and would recommend it. We did the 4 night American Plan and the food was very good and portions were ridiculous. I only finished a couple of meals. The 6'5" teenager fished most meals but was stuffed. We brought a ton of snacks and other food that we carted back and forth from Toronto. Accommodation: Cabin #9 it is a rustic cabin with 4 rooms and 2 single beds per room. The cabin has one bathroom and it is tight for 7 people. The beds are decent although the 3 that were over 6' 4" had there feet hanging off the ends of the beds made only that comment. I am 5' 9" and slept well every night. The place was clean but there was no daily cleaning and we kept it relatively clean over our 4 nights. I would have like a mid stay clean but ultimately not necessary and if we asked for it they would have done it. Food On the American Plan we had breakfast lunch and dinner. All food was delivered to the cabin each day in take out containers. Breakfast came at 7 AM, lunch was a packed lunch that usually came with breakfast and dinner came at 6 PM. There was no choices it came and that was your meal. We were all happy with the menu (although completely unknown) and we just opened the lid and surprise. Breakfast - Day 2Blueberry Pancakes sausages. Only one person finished and it was the best of the breakfasts. Day 3 was scrambled eggs, home fries and bacon. We ate late so this was already cooled down. There is a microwave and we should have reheated it. Day 4 was eggs over easy with bacon and home fries. very good. Day 5 was french toast. All were very good and almost impossible to finish except for the teenagers. Lunches Day 2 - Shore Lunch - the favourite of the group. All 7 of us would have rated this the best meal. We had walleye, bass and pike. Johnny and Meghan did a great job. The secret breading was fantastic and we ate more fish than we needed to. We caught over 30 fish and ate 24 or 25. My boys still talk about the potatoes and how good the fish was. Day 3and 4 pack lunch - just standard sandwich on a bun (, homemade cookies, chips and drinks - It was just too much. We drank all the drinks, ate all the cookies most of the chips and half the sandwiches. Dinner Day 1 - Beef stew on mashed potatoes and salad plus desert - tasty and plentiful Day 2 - Chicken vegetables roasted potatoes, salad and desert Day 3 - Spaghetti with Meat balls, Caesar salad and desert - we had Italians in the group so ... Again everyone ate what they could and 3 people actually finished it. The portion of pasta was enough for 2 people. Day 4 - Pork vegetables, rice, Salad and desert. Very tasty and i actually finished the main course and salad. Overall the food was great. I would have like to have a menu and pick my meals but it was not an issue and there were no complaints from over 7 people and 11 meals. Ranking would be Shore lunch #1, beef stew #2, pork #3, pasta #4, chicken #5 pancakes #6, then the rest. Packed lunch could be smaller. Fishing Day 2 - Wicksteed - just awesome - it was a perfect day - sunny nice - tons of fish and shore lunch - Johnny and Meg did a fantastic job. Set up the group with the go getters. We all caught fish and the group had 30 + We did our own fishing on the Marten River and little Marten lake. We arrive got in to the cabin. Peter took us down showed us the boats and gave an orientation of the water we could access. The first day we went out and caught some walleye, bass and sunfish - all small no keepers. Day 3 - decent fishing but hard - 3 keepers and 4-5 throw backs Day 4 - full day venturing out into little marten and big marten - 2 big pike, 3 big bass and 1 walleye keeper - 1 slot walleye, 4 small bass and 2 sun fish throw backs Fishing on the Marten River and lakes is work and you are working for fish. Peter had told us that we would need to work for our fish. There were no surprises. We are planning our return for next year. We would do the same 4 night trip. Arrive the first day early afternoon and fish in the evening. Then we would do a guided trip on the first full day. The middle full day we would take the boats to the little Marten lake and fish. Day 3 would be guided and then we would pack up the morning of the final day. Peter, Tania, Meghan and Johnny thanks again for a fantastic father son fishing trip.

We went to the MRL on June 19 for the 6 night housekeeping package. We were greeted by the new owners Peter and his wife Tania. Super nice people and were very happy to help with the check in procedure and then a run thru the cottage and boats to make sure we knew everything before unpacking. Cottage was great, we had the 4 bedroom #8 cottage. Nice kitchen with everything we needed and a huge screened porch to sit out in the fresh air and avoid mosquitoes. We had our own fire pit that was restocked with wood every day by Peter and staff. Nice Adirondack chairs for everyone to sit around and talk about the days adventure. The boats were great, nice 16' boats with full floors and casting decks up front. They had a livewell to keep your fish or minnows fresh. The boats were gassed up every night so they were ready to go whenever you were. Fresh minnows or worms were also included in the cost of the stay as well as the boat gas. A couple days we were able to get 2 tanks of gas and take a long run to the farthest point at McPhee Lake to fish there. Every day at 4:00 there was an optional meet at the garage. There Peter and Tania opened their fridge of select beverages to anyone who came down and wanted to talk about the fish they caught or maybe the fish that got away. Was a great time and shared a bunch of laughs. Unfortunately with the COVID protocols we were unable to use the lodge facilities but did have a quick look. It was an impressive area to sit back and watch TV or shoot a game of pool or darts. When we go back we look forward to utilizing this. So to sum it all up, great hosts, great cottages and boats, awesome location and some good fishing. Whether you want a guys weekend or a family vacation there is something for everyone there.
